At what age did you tell explain this to your daughter

I've described (more than once) how the body prepares for the possbility of pregnancy and what happens when a pregnancy doesn't take place (aka menstruation). I was careful to explain that it was "extra" blood and that the body produces more so they wouldn't be afraid of losing blood that they needed.
I guess I'm not sure why people want to wait until their kids are 8 or 9. . .it's so easy to talk about why they are YOUNG and keep the communications open.

I am with you...my daughter has known for what seems like forever...she comes into the bathroom with me, and to her it is just a normal thing now that happens every month. She knows that when she gets a little older (she is only 4 now) it will happen to her too, she is not to happy about it (heck I am STILL not happy about it LOL) but its a normal thing to her. I would ever wait until she was older to tell her things...my mom brought me to school to watch "the film" in 4th grade but never discussed it with me at all so I had NO clue what was happening whenI got it. She also never discussed sex (I picked all that up in the street)...I am hoping ot keep a MUCH moreopen line of communication with my own daughter.

Another tremendously helpful book which I highly recommend. My 10 year old DD has been reading it with great attention. Then we talk about what she's read.

Wow, I was glad to hear from Peggy & aprilgail2. I've also talked to my DD about it since she was a toddler. She's always known that she can ask me any question and I'll be happy to answer truthfully. She's known about sex since she was about 6 or so.

One thing that I have always made sure to tell her is that this is not public information. You do not tell other kids about it--if they ask her something, she should tell them they need to talk to their mom. (I told her the same thing when she found out about Santa!)

Starting at such a young age has made it much easier to talk about things now that she's 13. She knows that I will always speak to her truthfully and respectfully and she can ask me ANYTHING and I won't be shocked.

My Dd is 10 and just told her a few thing in the past few months .. I have no "supplies" as I get the Depo shot and don't have deal with a period . I know I will have to be getting some soon as she has been sooo moody as of late and starting to break out on her chin and nose ! I am so NOT ready for her to grow up yet ! ( not that I have say mind you - she wears a size 7.5 ladies sneaker and is almost 5 feet tall already ) I think I will look into the books recomended . Thanks Michelle

Yeah, I guess this is the one thing I need to stress a bit more. We try to be so open and casual about these things at home that I'm never sure what is going to come out of their little mouths when we are in public.

My daughters are 6 and 8 and have known about period, I have shown them different supplies, and they know what it is about. I don't want them to feel the way I did, that it was dirty, and you should not talk about it......

I'm glad you typed that because my DD is also 13 and hasn't yet either. I also have a drawer full of supplies and she has known about it forever. Sometimes I worry aliitle that she hasn't gotten it yet because like you said it seems like alot of kids are getting it by 13.
