At what age did you let your daughter start shaving her legs?

DD is 16 and doesn't shave her legs. She is very blond and you can hardly see any hair. She's hoping to never have to do it.

Many hairy people in this household!

I HAD to start shaving my armpits first when I was 8, yes, second grade, folks! :faint:

I was shaving the legs not much after that.

DD was the same way.

I let my DD get her armpits waxed at 11 1/2. Some people say that eventually it will not grow back in but I don't know how true it is. She does not ask to shave her legs but I will let her when she does. I always remember a girl in junior high school that had really hairy legs and the boys called her jungle jenny. I was such a shame that no girl should have to go through that.

The new Intuition razors are nice too... Quick and easy and I have never cut myself with them...Eliminates the need for shaving cream..

Funny this was brought up.I just let my oldest DD..10.5..start this weekend but only with an electric razor so that she does not hurt herself during the learning process. Had lots of mixed feeling about this but did not want her to be teased and then her self-esteem be messed with! She wasn't even sure about it so she tried a small spot and was ok with it. She has dark hair on her arms and legs for several years now. I think it depends on the maturity of the girl.If she is ready for this constant responsibility. Oh.....now she loves the way her legs feel. Kept saying her pants even felt so different.

So did I...........I remember the first time very plainly....Took his razor, soaped up my leg, and put the razor on my ankle, and pulled it up to my knee.........taking a nice long strip of skin with it.....Bleed........wow!! Not to mention the scab/scar I had practically forever.

But when DD at about 11 asked, I made sure to show her, and I let her use my electric razor, which I hate anyway.

MyDD is 9.5 and wants to shave, has a lot of hair and is just starting to turn dark. So I told her we would see when short weather got here. When she was 5 she came downstairs and hid behind the chair and was crying and I asked what was wrong and she said nothing, and kep t sobbing finally she said I shaved my legs and I cut it, I said you shaved your legs she said yeah you do mom. I told her she had a few years to go. We were talking about this the other week at dance class getting bras and using deoderant and shaving legs. One mom just bought her DD a sports bra and said she had been begging for one for a while because every one else had them, and then we talked about shaving legs and she said oh please don't anyone start that yet. Well if my DD needs to and wants to it will happen. She has been wearing deoderant since the beginning of 2 grade ( she had BO) and is now developing little breasts and the pubic hair is starting to turn dark. I remember using my dad's razor too.:bounce:

When my girls were little, they use to watch me shave my legs. I let them eat a popscicle and we both shaved. I used my razor, they used the wooden stick. We shared shaving cream. It was cherished mom and daughter moments. :)

Yeah, most people haven't. I have.

Mom let us start when we decided we were ready. Unfortunately, we didn't know that, so we cut ourselves without telling her. (You'd think I'd learn after my sister did it, but, well...!) I used my sister's razor but NO shaving cream or anything. I'm very, very blonde, and I didn't start until I was 12.

Thanks for all of your replies. This has not become a battle at my house yet and I don't want it to. After reading all of your opinions I have decided I will let her start shaving. I'll take her out this weekend and buy her a razor and shaving cream. She is developing is so many ways. I just wish her maturity would catch up to her body. This is a very confusing time. One day she acts like a teenager the next she acts like a child. The fun is just beginning.

I think when she's old enough to be concerned about the hair on her legs, she's probably old enough to shave.

DD is 9 and has asked when she can start shaving. I told her that once she started it would be a lifelong event. She does wear deoderant. She skates 5 days a week and can really work up a sweat. She isn't that ambitious to shower every day (every other day is the norm for her) so I told her she would get stinky if she didn't wear her "pitsh**".

I think it is definitely based on need not age. I started when I was in 4th grade but I should have started earlier than that. I don't think anyone ever showed me how to do it officially, but I shared a bathroom with an older brother and I just used his razor. He ended up telling my mom and she bought me some of my own.

I think I was 12 when my mom finally let me shave. I should have started much sooner. I had long hair in my armpits by 5th grade (yes, long, inches long!). I was freak show at school. It was so embarrassing. I will not let my dd go through that! It's not an age thing, it's a hair thing, when it starts growing, it's time to shave! My mom only gave in because we had to swim in PE starting in 6th grade and I made her look at my hairy armpits!

I don't remember when I started to shave my legs...But my leg hair used to be very light so I never really noticed it I guess. What sparked my interest was an episode of Mike and Maty (anyone remember that show?) where they had a segment on the right way to shave your legs! hmmm...
