AT&T Phones - Overwhelmed

Hi there, I have one of the new windows phone, the htc surround and i love it! The touch keyboard is so much easier and better than my ipod touch (4th gen)....While the windows phones are new, and still "lacking"in a a few areas, i think it is awesome...and there is a huge update due very soon..

I have the LG Quantum and I really like it. The keyboard is great for texting and entering info. The touchscreen keyboard isn't bad either though and I HATE touch screens! The battery lasts a long time too and its easy to use since its windows based. The only drawback I have found so far is that it can't take custom ringtones-yet. There's supposed to be an update soon that will allow them. Regardless, I still love the phone.

I love my LG Prime believe are not. I download books pdfs. I have a lot games. Music is great to listen with the 3.5 headphone jack. It seems like ATT phones have not caught up the other carriers.

So I have a question for you AT&T users. I have Verizon, have for many years, it's $$$$ and they are releasing the iPhone next month. I am upgrade eligible now but our contract isn't up until July. We were considering going with another provider when our contract is up, we are beginning to compare phones/prices/etc etc. My question is...with Verizon we all get new phones every 2 years, of course as the main account holder my phone is covered (usually) 100%, we get a very large discount on everyone else's phones (we have 4 cell phones, no home phone) when we upgrade those, we usually only pay $50. OP you said you usually give your kids your phone upgrade, do other phones on the account not get upgrades?

Each line upgrades separately. I had a single plan back in 2000-2001 when I first signed up. Later I added DH and then DD and some years later I added my brother. DH and DD are currently on the same cycle because I did a BOGO offer at Valentine's Day a couple of years ago.

My plan is a base of $60. I think it's 550 shared minutes with unlimited talk on weekends and after 9pm. AT&T also has rollover, so unused minutes carryover. Add $10 for each additional line, $30 for unlimited texting for the family, $15 data on the Smartphone (200mb) and $10 unlimited data on DD's line (not a smartphone). My bill is around $180/month.

I have had a number of phones over the years and only paid for a few of them when eligible for upgrade. I paid for my BB (re-furb $50), the two Samsung Propels that were BOGO ($75-100 after rebate?, can't remember) and I think DD paid about $70 (before $50 rebate) for the Laser. We only get phones when there is an eligible upgrade, every two years. We got off sync by switching lines upgrading/phones wanted by someone whose line wasn't eligible. DD used my last upgrade and I used DH, just takes a call to CS to correctly match IEMI and lines for correct billing/services (we usually re-use our SIMs).

There is an $18 activation fee added to your bill when you select a new phone. Payment for phones (online) is due up front when you place an order.

I've added the 3 phones to my account since I opened it, we all upgrade at the same time. I guess maybe we've just waited so we could do that. lol :) We get 1400 shared minutes, no rollever, unlimited text, no data plan and we pay $160 a month. So very comparable until there's are data plans being added. Thank You very much for your input! :)

Say break your phone and have no upgrades available. You can go Wal-mart and get a cheap go-phone and slip your sim card in it and throw away the pre-paid sim card. That is what I do. I can't afford pay mom a new cell phone everytime she breaks hers.

Better yet the ATT store has cheap pre-paid phones for 7.99 get through until next upgrade.

Another option that have by a unlocked gsm phone from places like amazon and cowboom.com

I am wondering whey most of ATT phones don't have 3.5 headphone jacks. All the other carriers have them on there phones. Only have handful to choose from.

I've been following this thread closely. I'm not eligible for an upgrade for a couple more months but I know sometimes when you go into the store they can get you upgraded sooner.

This is the most annoying thing!! My last 2 phones I had to buy the Samsung & LG headsets and they were nearly $20!!! With the samsung I waited for months for a cheapo/compatabile alternative to come out on ebay but nothing ever did.

That is why I love my LG Prime because it has 3.5 headphone jack. On contract and will not upgrading anytime soon. Okay it's not 3G who cares. It does what I want to do and use the unlimited data plan for 15.00 bucks. Yes I know it's pre-paid phone but love it.

OP here....I ended up finding a Samsung Captivate at WalMart for $48...at the AT&T store it was $149! So...I have a new phone :yay: Is it sad that the otterbox cost more than the phone? LOL I'm getting used to Swype, its actually pretty cool!

That's good to know. As of now we just keep our phones until we've upgraded again, for instance we both still have our old Jukes from last time and DBF actually has his from the upgrade when we got the Juke. We hold onto them because if our current phones are out of warranty (Verizon has a 1 year warranty at no cost, no ins. needed) and they break then we can simply have our old phones reactivated at no fee. :)

This doesn't count for us until our next upgrade. We still get the new every 2 and I am eligible for the early upgrade now, that means I could (in theory) go get the iPhone 4 from Verizon when it's released next month. I haven't decided if I'm going to yet, the website says I "may" have to pay a $20 early upgrade fee, which is new, I've never had to pay a fee to upgrade yet. :) So we might go ahead and stick with VW for another 2 years and then change carriers after that. :)
