ha ha ha this thread is making me laugh! I do feel bad for the OP but those stinkers are tough in Florida!! I'm actually suprised you don't here more about this with so many people in and out bringing food etc.

Well, I'm sure it would help if people cleaned up after themselves. This is a little OT, but I am still shocked at seeing the turkey legs lying all over the MK. Seriously, we saw 2 on the ground IN LINE (inside) for Splash! Eww. Seriously people - do you leave your turkey bones laying around your house?! Then maybe you shouldn't do so elsewhere. I couldn't believe it. But yes, getting back on topic, it probably doesn't help having the food in the villas with less housekeeping and more crumbs.

My youngest daughter had many respiratory problems when she was younger. The pediatrician sent her for allergy testing - milk, dust, dustmites, yadda yadda yadda,.....cockroaches! Cockroaches how was that possible she's never been near cockroaches? Doctor told me - it doesn't matter how well a place is cleaned or kept clean if there's food - there's cockroaches. (Not in your house) but any restaurant from McDonalds to Victoria and Albert's will have cockroaches there's nothing can be done about it.

That said I have seen some bugs at Disney World but calling the Front Desk for assistance has always helped. The lizards don't bother me but the Palmetto bugs as big as my fist I can do without.

During a drought one year we were staying at Port Orleans and my son went up to the Ol Man pool and decided he didn't need to cool off so badly after all - he decided the first one in the pool could have it all to themselves. It was an alligator (or so my son claims). One year when we were at the Poly they caught an alligator on the lawn.

Disney is very careful and does a great job but a pp was correct in that it's Florida and built on swamp land only so much they can do.

The worst bug I ever saw was in SC..a seven year cicada I think it was called. Holy Moly. And I see tarantulas and scorpians alot.

Good night! Spotting tarantulas and scorpions on our visit to Sedona AZ was easily the low part of a vacation out there. Cicadas... they're nothin'!!!

My brother is an entomologist (ie, bug caretaker).... He also said DO NOT CRUSH them. Apparently the mother cockroaches carry around eggs and young on their backs. If you crush it with your foot, you walk around with the eggs attached to the bottom of your shoe, thus ensuring the bugs' survival and spread!

I understand that it might be audio-animatronic so I hope that you didn't smash it. That would appear on your room charge.

We're also from the north and we're not used to being "okay" with bugs of any kind in the house. Bleech! It's one reason I could never live in the south. Bugs are NOT your friend.

No, except for ladybugs and honeybees, perhaps. Having grown up in the north, we had to get used to spotting vipers when we went hiking, and fighting the invasion of fire ants to our lawn. But, you adjust. And we don't miss falling down our icy front steps or shoveling snow for 5 consecutive days either. Everything has a trade-off.

So it wouldn't gross anybody out if I gave a colorful description of the multi-legged creature that I found in a can of DelMonte Green Beans when I went to make my green bean casserole??

Okay, now I'll be looking more closely at any canned foods.

We were in Cancun a few years ago and went out to a nice restaurant for our anniversary. My wife gasped and there was a caterpilar type worm crawling in her salad, fortunately whole. I was teasing her and told her that when I told my BIL she'd met the worm in cancun he'd think she'd been drinking tequilla. She said "why would he think that?". I told him and he said "so how'd you like the tequilla?".

Ewwww... a fact that I've long tried to forget or ignore about tequila! I think of it every time I think of a getting a margarita!

Note to cockroach haters (and a cockroach by any other name, ie. Palmetto Bug, is still a cockroach)....

don't even think about visiting the Phillipines. The ones here are small and mild in comparison!!!

My dd had to dissect a Madagascar cockroach for her college biology class. She said she did the lab without actually looking at the thing.

BTW: my favorite elimination method: suck them up with the vacuum cleaner. Doesn't leave a black spot on the floor/wall/ceiling/curtains while smacking them with your shoe. Plus it's kind of fun to play "catch the cockroach" with the end of the vacuum hose (my ds is really good at it).

Glad I live in Utah where it gets cold enough to kill most things in the winter. It keeps the size of the bugs down!

In South Georgia and Florida we have these bugs. It is NOT a sign of cleanilness. It is a sign that there isn't enough water around so the bugs are looking for it. Mostly they are headed to the toilet or the sink where there is open water.

I am not commenting on the other issues you had, but, a cockroach (palmeto bug as we call them around here) are not signs of a dirty dwelling.

Conan is right - I have lived in Orlando all my life (I am part of the 5% of the area's native population) and cockroaches are seen more often during droughts. If you think that roach was something you should see the armored swamp roaches!

Cockroaches are everywhere in Florida. My mother, who is spotless has 1 or 2 a year. There is no getting around them. I'm sure they are plentiful at the AKL just due to the Savanna.

I saw a snake at BTMRR 2 weeks ago--- A big black one!!! slithering down the fast pass lane right when you enter. Now snakes freak me out!!

I would suggest that Jambo House is not, in fact, infested with cockroaches throughout the walls, since yours is the first report on the entire internet (looks like swan/dolphin have had some issues though - eek!). Moving down 4 floors should do the trick. I would definitely call your guide as well, however.

May I ask, what issues has the Swan & Dolphin had? Anything but mice or snakes!!! We may be staying a few nights there soon.

It's Florida. bugs we have, all kinds of bugs. It's really dry right now, we've not had enough rain. Chinch bugs that live in the grass can also look like a small cockroaches and often try to find their way in during a drought. Fortunately most cockroaches/palmetto bugs aren't subject to infestation, it's the little german cockroach that creates infestations. Those are hard on people with asthma etc. You could lay your purse on the floor and one crawls into your bag, they are sometimes found in grocery paper bags, they come out also after a heavy rain.

Even with regular pest control treatment and a pristinily clean house, bugs will continue to share accomodations with humans, it's Florida. I've lived in Florida for 37 years, they still gross me out. Here's to the rest of your birthday vacation, I'm sure it will get better!

In some parts of the US cockroach is the MOST common allergy, esp in urban areas.


I also remember leaning up a door frame in HI in my younger days having been up for about 48 hours working and seeing one of the Palmetto bugs and thinking if I had 2 of them I'd let them carry me down the hallway.

Wow. Just got back today from WDW and this floors me. The water shortages are definitely resulting in an increase in bugs looking for water. I saw cockroaches/water bugs/palmetto bugs on some of the boats, one on our porch (Wilderness Lodge), and in a restroom (Magic kingdom). In past trips I have also had spiders in the room(Boardwalk) and wasps on our deck (Animal Kingdom). And not to mention love bugs that are everywhere. (for those heading to WDW in the next week or so we starting seeing more and more each day)

This is Florida - there are bugs. I have only contacted pest control once. It was for the wasps since my husband is allergic. Even then we never even thought of asking for a new room. And not to mention trying for 'restitution' such as a free meal.

If everyone did this.....????

Anyway, I wonder if the OP realizes that newer construction can actually have more bugs that an older one. This is because as the building is built they actually trap bugs in by building around their nests. It typically tapers off after that generation of insects dies off. I am sure Disney sent in pest control prior to opening but don't be surprised if there are spiders around any wall opening such as pipes, switch plates, light sockets, etc.

OP is very happy to report that I have not seen any cockroaches since we moved from our room at Jambo.

Our DVC Guide called us because she noticed we moved to Kidani and wanted to know why. I told her what happened and how so many people are saying that "it's a Florida thing".
She said it may be a Florida thing but its not okay for them to be in our hotel rooms!

I don't care what kind of "thing" it is. I am not staying where I see roaches and that's just me. Maybe other people enjoy roaches but I do not.
Trip has been great since we bid farewell to the little sucker. I hope the bait the pest control guy used sent him to his maker and he is in all his glory in the Great Big Trash Can in the Sky.

I'm sure DVC will be glad to seal the windows, doors and patios so that bugs cannot get into the rooms. However, the members may not like not being able to use their patios, windows or doors.

Disney uses an ecological approach to pests. They don't just spray pesticides willy-nilly.

I am a native in Fl.I love the south. Bugs bugs bugs. one roach is far from invested. These type of cockroaches breed in palm trees.the little guys are the ones I don't like to see. Wait till you see one of the Big guys with wings. They can not control where they land.

I visited my brother a few years back while he was in the Peace Corps in Niger, Africa and stayed in the hostel while there...the rule at that time was, if you go into the kitchen at night, be sure you switch on the lights first to give the roaches fair warning!

Seriously though, remember it is the reptiles who help keep the insect population DOWN! We LIKE lizards and snakes! (Well, lizards, anyway...!)

BUT.....today, just now after we have been here two nights, I opened the cabinet under the kitchen sink and saw a COCKROACH scattering about!!!!!
I am freaking out! I have not seen a cockroach since I was a child and my family moved out of a dump of an apartment in Chicago. .

First I must say I feel bad that your room wasn't clean when you checked in.

Now the following might get me flamed but these thoughts popped into my head when I read the title of your thread:

At Jambo House now - Saw dirty animals outside my window and now I can't use my balcony.

Animal Kingdom Lodge, where we bring the animals to the inside of your room.
