assigned room vs. guarantee, please explain?

Assigned room is when either you, or DCL, select the room you'll be in.

A GTY means that you will be assigned a room in that category, or higher, usually when they prepare the cruise docs.

When DCL begins taking reservations, you can select your cabin number. Unless something serious unexpectedly happens (such as damage to the cabin requiring days to repair) you will get the cabin you selected.

Once the ship reaches a certain percent full, DCL quits taking reservations for specific cabins and will only guaruntee you will get a cabin at the level you booked for (or above).

Of course you can also just book at the guarantee level even before that percentage of the ship is full. People will do this so that when DCL goes to assign cabins at docs time (for everyone not already assigned a room), they might get bumped to a higher level.

For example, lets say the ship has 200 Cat 6 cabins and 200 Cat 5 cabins. If no body reserves a specific cabin number, then they can sell upto 400 cabins at Cat 6 guaruntee. All 400 would pay the Cat 6 price, but half of them would get bumped to Cat 5 "for free".

So, if I already have specific cabins assigned, I have no chance at all for an upgrade, is that correct? Just wondering! Thanks for the explanations!

I don't know for sure, but it's the only thing that makes sense. Why unexpectedly change cabin numbers when they have already been assigned?

After all, if I've picked to stay in my favorite Cat 6 cabin, I'm going to be pretty pissed if I get my docs and find I've got a free upgrade to a random Cat 5 (Cat 5 = Cat 6 except Cat 5 is on a higher deck).

Sure there will be extream situations where someone assigned to a cabin gets upgraded (such as a maintainence situation closes the assigned cabin for the trip).

Last sept. we had a specific cabin number booked thru our TA. It was a cat 7- nav. verandah. We goot a call from the TA saying that Disney had upgraded us to a cat 5 about 4 week from sailing. We were pleasantly surprised to say the least. It was a much better location with a full verandah. Got a love them. So I guess it shows that free upgrades are not only for those who have GTY. My best advice is to book the cabin you want at the level you want and if you are upgraded great if not you won't be too disappointed.

I know if I got a free upgrade from Disney and got changed from my favorite room, I wouldn't be pissed. I'd be so happy just to have gotten an upgrade to anywhere.

BTW - I don't think it matters if your room is GTY or a specific room to get an upgrade. It just depends on the pixie dust......

Now I must admit that it would depend upon the situation. I would be upset with the sample I gave, but now if Disney wants to upgrade me from Cat 6 to Cat 3 or Cat 2, then I'm not going to complain.

But given that Cat 6, 5, and 4 are all about the same, I'd rather have a Cat 6 that I've picked than a randomly assigned Cat 4.

I'll also say that if I started in a Cat 11 or 12, it would be highly unlikely that I would ever be upset by an upgrade to Cat 10 or above (that's changing from standard to deluxe staterooms).
