Strange situation here if you had the money for a solo trip to Disney or an upgrade of your camera to your brands flagship camera (K7 For the Pentax people) which would you do?

I'd go for the camera! A trip lasts a week. Pictures last until you delete them :lmao:

Honestly, I'd go for better glass for myself, then the trip.

Is there something that your current camera won't do, that having an upgrade would allow you to do?

I'm not big on upgrading just to have the latest and greatest, I think you should only do so when you find your current equipment to be lacking in some manner.

Remember, that flagship camera will be replaced in 12 to 24 months if current trends hold.

Thats the thing that has kept me from upgrading my current camera still covers all my needs and I have not outgrown it. The thing that makes me want to get it is that the rumor has a new camera coming out in a couple of months possibly so the price has been dropping and it can be gotten fairly cheap now. I know still not a good enough reason which makes theses decisions soo darn hard.

If that's the case, then the price will continue to fall including after the new version is released. And if you buy now, and the new version has something that you really want, you'll be kicking yourself in the butt for not waiting to find out what the new version will bring to the table.

I know which is yet another thing that stops me. I should just take the money and spend it on the solo trip or maybe some new glass ahh well i will eventually decide

I upgraded to my K7 in March and it has already come down a good bit from there, and currently has a $100 Fathers Day rebate from Pentax I saw in an email... but... I've also taken lots of photos with it since then and wouldn't trade it for the world - was a huge upgrade over my old ist*DL, so it was a worth the jump. Might not be worth the jump from a more recent model... yet... since the price will continue to drop. I do love it, though.

The answer to this question really depends on your needs/wants. If you really, really, really need/want a new camera, then get the camera. But if you are okay with your camera, then go for the trip. Personally I have a hard time passing up the opportunity to go to WDW when it presents itself. I love photography and I love WDW. It's a balancing act of where to spend your money. So for me, if I'm okay with my camera I'd take the trip.

Obviously going to Disney... since I'm spending as much money on my vacation as the camera costs! LOL

The serious answer - I guess a lot depends on what you do with your photography, what limitations you currently face with your camera, and why you need/want the top of the line equipment.

I'd kinda think about how important or rare the trip may be; especially if you already have a decent camera. If it's somewhere I've been a couple of times before; or if I can still manage to go in the somewhat near future, I'd probably go with the camera. But if it's a rare trip, or there might be some special event associated with it, I'd go for the trip.

I'd be more upset knowing I missed out on unique photo ops, than knowing I have the newest camera and nothing unique to even take photos of.

Can the budget handle a K-x and the trip? That would be the best of both worlds! Otherwise I say trip.

If that's the case, then the price will continue to fall including after the new version is released.

You are thinking in Canon and Nikon terms. Pentax sells nearly 100% of their stock, so you do not get the big deals when a new one is released. They pretty much sell out of the old as the new model is introduced. That might not end up being the case with the K-x, since there are making so many of them, but it will with the K-7. It could even sell out before the new model is out.

I would probably lean towards the trip, especially since you say that you haven't outgrown your current camera yet.

The price probably won't get much cheaper on the K-7 - but it's not going to get much higher, either - and the camera will be just as good when a new model is released as it is today. It's build very sturdily so even if new ones aren't available, I would have no issues buying a used one. (Heck, my K20D, with over 15,000 shots, is on its way to its new owner in Australia right now... and it still works as good or better than day one.) You'll also find plenty for sale as us lemmings who buy the latest have to sell their "old" cameras. :)

What you're buying, in a large part, with the K-7 are all the external controls - which are fantastic, but if you're doing OK without them, then that may not be a compelling reason. The screen is much nicer... but again, that doesn't make your pictures better.

The other question is - how would you feel being at Disney solo? If you like solo traveling, then that helps. If you're not sure, then maybe it's not the way to go. It does mean that, if you have photography on your mind, you can bring a tripod and do whatever you like all day at your own pace, even do some ND filter tripod work during the day.

I would lean towards the trip, or glass. My K200D is fine for what I need right now. I would trade up if the higher ISO capabilites of the k-x were available with the controls of the K-7, but I am content to wait.

As Groucho said, if you are alone and phototgraphy is on the agenda, YOU decide where and what shots to take and you can use your existing camera to its fullest potential.

Neither... I'd buy new lenses. But that's me, and not you.

Thanks everyone it looks like glass it is more than likely for me this year will have to put off DIsney for a year or so starting to go too often anyway i think. There is a new Voigtlander 90 mm that just came out for Pentax and a Tamron 10-24 that seem to be calling to me :lmao:
