Arriving at Miami Airport

We are arriving at Miami airport from Heathrow and then taking an internal flight to Orlando International. I know we have to clear immigration and customs at Miami and we need to reclaim our bags to do this.
I wanted to ask if anyone has flown via Miami recently and if they could tell me:-

1) how long did it take to clear immigration and customs ?
2) I've heard that it's possible to do an electronic passport check? Is this possible at Miami and how does this work? Does it save any time?

Hi. Flew into Miami from Heathrow on Thursday. Had to wait out a thunderstorm - they don't allow staff on the gate - on the tarmac in Miami. Other planes in same position so when we did decant there were some pretty serious lines! We were on the AA57 landing at Miami 2:10pm and the US200 out of Miami at 4:35pm. Turnaround was a little tight without the thunderstorm. We did make the connection with some pretty nifty footwork.
The electronic passport check was only available to American residents when we were there.
