When we began toying with the idea of a holiday trip to the World, I was certain that it was never going to happen. There were too many obstacles in the way that were going to prevent it. I didn’t even want to let myself consider that it would be a possibility because I didn’t want to feel the disappointment when the plans fell apart.

It all started last Christmas when we were at my mom’s house for the holidays. We were watching a special on HGTV about how Disney decorates all of the parks at WDW for the holidays. My mom commented on how much she would like to see the holiday decorations some day. Seeing them “for real” was something she had always wanted to do. My husband & I had been there for Thanksgiving quite a few years ago, and I told her that it was my favorite time of the year to go. She said we should try to get all of my immediate family to go together during the holidays the next year. At that time in my mind, there was no way it was going to work out.

Let me explain myself, because I promise that I am not a negative person by nature. I work at a high school, and therefore all of our trips have to revolve around a school schedule. If the students are in school, then my principal wants us there. Totally understandable. It just makes vacation planning a little difficult because we end up having to travel when everyone else is on a holiday break and is traveling too. Not much fun when you are going somewhere like WDW, and it can get really crowded. Especially during the week of Thanksgiving or during the 2 weeks of Christmas break. I usually don’t even consider asking for time off during the regular school year because I know that it is frowned upon. So when my mom says “holiday trip”, I immediately thought, “there is no way.”

Jump forward to April and my sister called me to say that she wanted to plan a graduation trip for her son that June. He wanted to go to WDW, and she was wondering what I thought about them going in July. After a few conversations, she asked if we wanted to go along. July fits perfectly into my work schedule, but it was already April and I didn’t think we could pull it together by then. But it got me thinking…..

See, our last trip to the World was in June 2009. We went with our then 21 month old son and had a fabulous time. When we left, we didn’t know when we would be going back due to expense, timing, and the fact that we live on the West coast so we can’t just spontaneously decide to plan a trip. It was sad to leave and not know when we would see Florida again.

Here is a picture of us on that trip.

So, of course when my sister asked us to go on the trip with them, I couldn’t help but be tempted. To go from no possibility at all, to even a slight possibility was too much for me. I got my hopes up.

One day, we were talking about the weather during July and I happened to say, “The best time that we have ever been there was the week after Thanksgiving. The weather is perfect.” Those 2 sentences changed everything. She started looking into arrangements for November. I told her that we would not be able to go, just due to the school schedule. I really did think it was best for her family, and I knew it wouldn’t work for us, so I had to accept that we wouldn’t be going.

Another curve ball. Since the state of California is in a major budget crisis, a lot of people were losing their jobs or having their hours cut at my school. I was no exception to that. I was called in and told that they would be cutting my hours by a whole month. Usually I work through the summer, but now I have to take the month of July unpaid. For many reasons, this was a huge adjustment. I am actually one of the few people on campus who needs the time to work in the summer.

So I ran into my principal one day and he mentioned that they were going to allow my schedule to be flexible and work one of the weeks in July, but it meant I needed to take that week off at some other point of the year. I took a huge gamble (& I was soooo nervous) and I told him about this family trip the week after Thanksgiving. Would it be ok if I took that week off, since my office is really slow during that week anyway? He did not even hesitate. He said, “Absolutely. Family comes first.”

So what does that mean? It means we get to go back during the holidays!!! I am still in shock about the whole thing, even though it has been confirmed for a few months. I made a countdown ticker, and yesterday I saw that it said “2 months” until the day that we leave. I should have started this PTR months ago when all the planning started, but I have just been too busy to get it going. Now that we are at the 2 month mark, I can’t procrastinate any longer.

If you are jumping onboard to read this, thanks in advance. Even though we have been to WDW a few times, I always learn something new from all of the creative people on these boards. Please don’t be shy to give me your opinions! We have ended up with 8 people going on this trip and the ages range from my 3 year old son to his grandparents, so there is going to be quite a few decisions to be made.

Hi there! You're my first reader. Thanks for joining. :goodvibes You are so lucky that you get to leave in 6 days. I am going to jump over and get started on your PTR so I can see what you will be up to on your trip.

Yes, we have some ADRs booked, and we will be staying in a couple of different places. Kind of scattered...but I'm looking forward to it. I will probably get another update in before you leave so you can see more details soon!

Hi there, its me

:goodvibes

Hey there. Did I tell you I was starting a PTR? You found me pretty quickly if I didn't tell you. Maybe we have ESPN. ;)

HI Again!! & thanks for jumping over to read my PTR!
now its 5 days!! LOL!!! im super excited!!
looking foward to seeing your ADR's and plans.. The dining is one of my favorite parts! :yay:

You know I'm in! I can't wait to see and hear all about how Dylan does! And you already know how jealous I am that you will be there during the holidays! Look forward to hearing the details. I think we are heading back early next year so once I again, I can look to see how Dylan did before our trip!

Actually it was completely coincidental. it was ESPN!. I signed in so I could find your last WDW trip report b/c I wanted to show the guys a couple of photos. And I found this!!

Dining is one of my favorite things too. Do you go with your favorites or branch out & try something new? Decisions, decisions....

Welcome!! You definitely need a holiday trip sometime. If it is possible for Disney to be more magical, it is during that time. Actually my favorite holiday stuff there is the resorts. They are all themed so differently and it's so creative!

It has been a while since I've posted pictures of Dylan. You will probably be surprised by how big he is!

Thanks for coming over! It feels good to be back. No fun when you have a vacation looming & no time to plan it. :headache:

That's so funny! Glad you found it.

I'm so excited for you guys to go during the holidays! :woohoo: And I'm excited you're doing a PTR about it! :goodvibes Can't wait to see how much Dylan has grown. I bet WDW will be an entirely different experience for him this time too, and not just because of the holidays! I can't wait to hear all about what you have planned!

We're going shortly after your trip, I think. Dec. 9-14th. Haven't started the PTR yet, though (still working on my June TR...). We have that trip planned specifically to see all the holiday stuff too.

I'm so happy that you're back writing on here! I love your TRs! :yay:

im always up for trying something new for sure!

i still haven't been to
Chef mickeys and Cinderellas Royal Table! just didnt fit into my last two trips..
HOWEVER... im definitely hitting them up next year!!

I am glad that you are able to get the time off. DW and I are going around the same time, this time without the kids. Check out my PTR if you get a chance.

Hi there!! Thanks for finding me. I didn't realize that you were still writing a TR. I will follow your links and get reading. That is too bad that our dates will just miss each other.

We are getting more excited every day about being there during the holidays. Last Christmas, Dylan enjoyed looking at the lights so I know that he is going to be so excited when we are walking through the parks. We are still needing to get our plans nailed down, so I am looking for holiday tips!!

We haven't tried either of those places yet either. That is what I mean about places I want to go vs. new places. Both of them sound great, but they are not on our ADR list for this trip.

Joining in! :yay:

Hi there! Do you have a link to your PTR? How fun for you...a trip without kids. It is a totally different planning experience, isn't it?

Yeah, every time I finish writing one TR there's another to start. Good problem to have, though. :) I'm currently working on the June one (need to write another update...), but the August one is actually complete (it was a short trip, so I just wrote it quick).

I'm looking for holiday tips too! There's a thread somewhere on here about holiday tips that I'm semi-following. Other peoples' holiday TRs from prior years are nice too. One recommendation that stuck with me was to try to plan ADRs at different resorts so that you can see the decorations while also being there for another reason. Although we don't actually have a ton of ADRs for that trip yet...:rolleyes1 Can't wait to hear what you have planned...maybe I'll get some tips!

Random note: I finally got to try a Napoleon from France last month! You were right...yummy! DH raved about it too!

I'm here! Can I come with?! :flower3:

Yes! Please do! That would be so fun. Do you have another trip planned or are you going to wait a while?

It's funny because I rarly leave the TR section on the Dis anymore. I don't have a lot of time to be on here, so when I am on I try to just get tips through TRs. I will have to do a search for hoilday threads. We have made a couple of ADRs at the different resorts for that reason. We want to be "forced" to make it to places we wouldn't normally go. I'm starting to get excited.

And can I just say :yay::yay: YAY :yay::yay: for you finally getting a Napoleon. I'm so glad you liked it. I would have felt bad for raving about it and then you hating it. Yum, that sounds good right now.

Now that you have heard some of the story about how this all came together, I will get going on the introductions.

Hi, I’m Alison, and I’m a Disney-aholic. :flower3: I’ve been in love with all things Disney since I was pretty young. Our parents would take us to Disneyland once a year when we were little, because we would be in Southern California visiting family. That was all it took to have me hooked. I am the planner most of the time, and I really enjoy details & spreadsheets (I know, I’m weird), but sometimes I allow the details to stress me out instead of just enjoying the trip. I work at a high school doing the accounting for the sports teams & on-campus clubs, and I run the Student Store. I love my job! It is so much fun to work with kids and know that you are helping them grow into (hopefully) responsible adults someday.

Todd is my husband. We have been married for 13 years and we met in college. He runs his own Internet business from home and he also coaches girl’s volleyball at the same school that I work at. He really enjoys being able to coach a sport that he is so passionate about and the girls respond to his enthusiasm. He likes Disney almost as much as I do, so he likes to be involved in the planning ~ his favorite topics are restaurants and hotels. He used to be a DJ, and he would work at weddings that were at really nice hotels, so he enjoys going to all of the resorts to check them out.

Here is a recent photo of us from a summer trip.

Then you have Dylan, our son that just turned 3. He is the happiest little guy who is always smiling & laughing. I have already said that he is going to grow up to be a comedian….or a volleyball player. He has developed his own passion for volleyball since he spends so much time watching his dad coach. It doesn’t hurt that he has a ton of teenage girls doting on him all of the time. ;) For a long time now, he has practiced passing, setting, & serving a ball and I am amazed at what he is able to do. We have taken him to Disneyland a couple of times and to WDW when he was about 1 ½ years old. We are starting to break the news to him that we will be going back and he is already talking about riding the Teacups.

Next is my sister Angelyn, who is the instigator of this trip. She & her husband Bryan live in Southern California. She has a love for Disney that is similar to mine, since we grew up going to Disneyland together. One great thing about her is that she is a planner too! That means that I am not doing it all by myself, and it has been great to have her picking up the planning slack since I have been really busy with work lately. Bryan has never been to WDW before, so this is his first time. His birthday will also be happening during our trip, so that just makes it even more fun. They wanted to take her son Elijah on a trip as a graduation present, and they told him he could pick where he wanted to go. He picked Disney World. She was surprised that he would want to go there again, since we all got to go to WDW together about 6 years ago. I’m glad he did, because it was all we needed to have a reason to plan a “family reunion” of sorts.

ry%3D480

This is a picture that she sent to me today from a family trip to WDW when we were in high school. This was at MGM (when it was still called that) and before the giant hat was placed in front of the Great Movie Ride.

ry%3D480

Elijah has started college this fall and is enjoying it (as far as I know). He is happy to be taking classes that he is interested in, rather than all of the required stuff that you have to take in high school. He is interested in music, specifically drumming, and he is taking a couple of music classes this semester. Dylan thinks Elijah is pretty cool, and I’m looking forward to some pictures of the 2 of them together.

Last up are my parents. My mom has always had a desire to see the World during the holidays when all of the lights are up. I’m so glad that Thanksgiving is when Disney completes the decorating for Christmas so that we will be able to enjoy all of it. My parents went with Todd, Dylan & I on our last trip in June 2009 and they had a great time getting to see Dylan experience everything for the first time. There is quite an age gap between their 2 grand kids (17 and 3), but I know they are looking forward to being with both of them on this trip.

So that is our family. As you can see, we have quite an age range going on, so it will be interesting to see how all of us fit in the things we want to do the most. We all live in different parts of California so this is going to be a great time to all be together for Thanksgiving & an early Christmas.
