Are You Frickin’ Kidding Me? An Aug/Sep Surprise Trip... (12/01) Hakuna Matata

Where does the time go? I can't believe it's been so long since I managed to get on here. Life is just crazy.

That's awesome! Yay, so happy to hear that your little one is feeling a whole lot better! :)

That photo is absolutely precious. The smile on her face is adorable.
Thank you so much. The photographer really did a great job of capturing her genuine smile.

So happy PrincessK's feeling better! Phew!! What a relief!
And that's a really nice photo of the two of you! :thumbsup2
Thanks. I hate myself in pictures but I like this one enough to have it as the background on my phone.

I'm so pleased she's feeling much better and that's such a cute photo :)
Thank you. It's all PrincessK. She is just the cutest little blue-eyed girl ever... but I might be biased.

Glad to hear that PrincessK is on the mend and back to her normal self. I can't imagine how you guys must have been feeling.

The photo of you two is just precious, beautiful mother daughter shot :)
Thank you. It really is a nice picture of the two of us. The photographer told us to just go ahead and interact, maybe hug each other, talk, etc. He just snapped away. So it's a genuine mother daughter moment that he caught.

Awwww, sweet picture! Can't wait till you are all famous!
Thanks. I've heard rumours that the campaign will start on November 26th but we'll have to wait and see.

Good to hear good news! Glad PrincessK is on the mend.
Thanks so much.

I apologize for the lateness of this update. I will endeavor to do better in the future.

A Shell Hunting We Will Go

August 24, 2015 – Part 1

The first weekday of a vacation is always a bit special. There is nothing like being able to say “I’m supposed to be at work today but I’m not”.

So satisfying.

It was especially satisfying since I got to sleep in. The alarm went off at 6:00 am. Which is most definitely sleeping in… if you normally get up at the ungodly hour of 4:45am.

I woke feeling rested. In fact, everyone seemed to feel the same way.
We all got right out of bed and started getting ready.

I helped PrincessK with her clothes while Grumpy got dressed. At the same time I was having an internal conversation that went something like this:

Arg. We still need to do breathing
What time is it now?
Hmm almost 6:15.
I’ll probably get done getting her ready in the next 5 minutes but then I have to get dressed.
Dressed and hair done.
That’ll be about 6:30 I guess.
Get breathing stuff together and PrincessK settled to do it… 6:35
Finish breathing 6:50 at best.
Yikes that’s starting to get late.
What if people are already on the beach?
Plus we’ll miss sunrise.
Should have gotten up earlier.
Why didn’t I think to get up earlier?
If only we didn’t have to do her breathing…

“Grumpy?”
“Yeah”
“What do you think about waiting to do PrincessK’s breathing until after we go to the beach?”

He was quiet for a few seconds.
“I don’t see why not”.

And there is was. The solution.
Only I immediately started feeling guilty.

We have always made her treatments a priority. As we should. This felt a little like cheating. Which was ridiculous since I wasn’t suggesting we not do it. But ridiculous or not, that’s how I felt.

“Yeah because it’s not like we won’t do it after. I mean what’s the difference really? If she slept in at home we wouldn’t wake her up to do it at this time and if we’d decided not to go to the beach today we would still be sleeping and who knows what time she would have gotten up and I’m sure her clinic would tell us to go ahead and enjoy the morning and…”

“Why are you justifying? I already said okay!”

Right. Moving on.

Grumpy was all ready to go by the time I finished getting PrincessK dressed. Since I still had to get dressed and brush my hair, Grumpy offered to take care of the mass of tangles at the back of PrincessK’s head.

Bed head is a whole other beast when you have curly hair.

PrincessK did not like this plan at all. She was positive that daddy was going to pull her hair and hurt her. And that is exactly what happened the last time he brushed her hair. But he assured her that he could do it “just like mommy does” and PrincessK finally agreed to sit still for him.

I quickly got dressed and returned to the living area just as he was finishing.

“All done.”
“Wow daddy your bad brushing days are over!”

:rotfl:

Clothes on and hair expertly detangled we headed out the door.
6:25am. Not too bad.

It only took a few minutes before we were walking down the boardwalk to the beach. It was dark. The pink edges of the sun just starting to rise above the distant clouds. It was also deserted.

ShellHunting1_zpszlfszeqa.jpg

So peaceful.
All the stress in my body melted away.

Within a minute we came across one of these little guys.
ShellHunting2_zps70zq6nr7.jpg

I stopped to take a picture.
Grumpy was on high alert.

The last time we vacationed here I found this cute little crab that was only about the size of the tip of my pinky finger. He was too cute to resist so I set my hand down on the ground and waited patiently for him to walk on. I showed him to the kids (BGirl and her older brother) who had zero interest in holding him.

Grumpy on the other hand was eager for his chance to hold the tiny crab, which looked even smaller in his hand. After a couple of minutes he asked if I wanted it back.

“Naw. I don’t want to bug him too much. Just go ahead and put him down.”

So he did.

The crab barely hit the sand before a bird swooped down and grabbed it.

I’d like to think that the bird was simply scooping him up to bring him to his lost relative but…

Grumpy was absolutely horrified. He felt like it was his fault. That he had drawn attention to the little crab and offered it up to the birds.
To this day he hates birds.

After ensuring this particular crab was not in danger of being eaten we started our hunt for shells.

ShellHunting3_zpskn9koait.jpg

We strolled and looked around.
Well, I strolled. PrincessK was jumping from shell to shell. Grabbing the first thing she saw. Grumpy followed along trying to convince her to be a little more selective.

ShellHunting3b_zpsoyfa1utm.jpg

While they discussed the merits of collecting broken shells I alternated between examining the shoreline for really good shells and just simply taking in the atmosphere.

ShellHunting4_zpsliob72sl.jpg

“Babe come here.”
“One sec”
“No seriously come here”

I started making my way over to where Grumpy was standing. He was a ways up the beach and I didn’t want to miss any good shells along the way so I moved slowly as I continued to search.

“Hurry up”

He was clearly getting impatient with me and while I couldn’t fathom what type of shell required me to race up the beach, I complied and walked quickly.
When I was within a couple of feet of him I stopped dead.

“NO WAY!!!”
“Isn’t he cute mommy?”
“He sure is”

ShellHunting5_zpshouvaxdr.jpg

(I apologize for the crappy picture but he just wouldn’t hold still)

Grumpy pointed just behind himself on the beach.
ShellHunting7_zpszxw7uszk.jpg

“Those stupid birds are right there. We should help him get to the water.”

So we did.

ShellHunting6_zpshhcgfi95.jpg

We walked on either side of him. When we got close to the water Grumpy and PrincessK continued to walk with him while I took my socks and shoes off. Then I started walking with one foot on either side of him. When we hit the edge of the water the little guy had to fight against the waves (which thankfully weren’t very big). They would hit and he would fight to prevent them from sending him backwards. Then he’d ride the pull of the wave to get himself further down the sand. I continued to walk with one foot on either side and eventually, when we got to water that was just above my ankles, he drove his little head under and swam as hard as he could out to sea.

It was truly amazing.
If I had a bucket list. This would have been on the top. :cloud9:

Riding a high, we watched the sun finally rise over the distant clouds.
ShellHunting8_zpst26rgvzn.jpg

Then we continued on our shell finding journey.

We were on the lookout for more baby sea turtles. But sadly all we found were bodies.

It was clear to Grumpy and I by surveying the area that the birds were grouped together because a nest of sea turtles had hatched and made their way to the down the beach during the night. The birds basically waited just by the edge of the water to grab them as they attempted to make it to the sea.

Nature can be so cruel.

Eventually our grumbling bellies and the ridiculous heat got to us and we decided to call an end to our shell hunting expedition.

PrincessK was proud of her shell collection…
ShellHunting9_zpsncycmh4s.jpg

but clearly the heat was getting to her.

Poor little thing.
It was only 7:40am and she was already soaked.

Our original plan was to head straight to breakfast but PrincessK clearly needed to re-hydrate and given the amount of sweat, no way water was going to cut it. So we made a detour to the hotel room.

I made PrincessK some Hydralyte and Grumpy jumped on the iPad.
I internally rolled my eyes.
Seriously, can’t he go on vacation without playing stupid iPad games?
I plopped down beside him on the couch.
“Whatcha up to?”

Subtle right?

He turned the iPad toward me.
“Trying to figure out what type of sea turtle it was.”

Oh.

“This page says there’s five types of sea turtle in Florida.”

While PrincessK had her drink, Grumpy and I scoured images online and compared them to the photos I had taken. Eventually we came to the conclusion that “our” turtle was a baby Hawksbill.

We also found contradicting information on what you should do if you see a baby turtle.

The Cocoa Beach site said that you should put it in a plastic container with sand.
I felt guilty.
Hawskbills (if that's truly what it was) are endangered.
I felt really guilty.

Grumpy reminded me that we didn’t have anything to put it in anyway.
Good point.

We found another Florida site said you shouldn’t touch them at all.
I liked that site better.
It said I did the right thing ::yes::

With the turtle identified and PrincessK re-hydrated we were ready to go on with the day.

Out the door we went.
Down to the lobby and out the front doors.
Once outside our destination was almost directly across the street.
Where were we going?

To IHOP of course!

Yes. It was the third morning in a row.
No I don’t care if you judge.

Grumpy and I switched back to our usuals. Steak and eggs for him and steak tips and eggs for me. We both really enjoyed our breakfast. Since PrincessK hadn’t eaten breakfast voluntarily yet I decided to order something I knew she couldn’t complain about… bacon. At home she ate bacon for breakfast almost every day. By choice.

Her plate had bacon, eggs, and banana slices. She ate the banana then declared she was full.

Um no.

“Eat the bacon or we aren’t taking you back to the beach.”

She grumbled but complied with the request.
So she had a few slices of banana, a slice of bacon, and milk.
Really great for a kid that needs more fat and calories than a “typical” child.

We knew we were going to have to do something about it. So we made a trip over to the grocery store and grabbed some Half & Half. This is one of our secret weapons at home. Half & Half (also called coffee cream) is 10% fat which means it has about 5 times as much fat as 2% (see how well I did math there). It also has about 2.5 times the number of calories. So when PrincessK is having a slow eating day, we give her a cup of that to drink.

Since it was there we grabbed some chips and booze too.
What? 9:20 am is a perfectly acceptable time to purchase wine and beer.

We made it back to the room by 9:30 am. And that is when we finally did PrincessK’s breathing.
She was actually very cooperative on this particular day.

I took a picture as proof.

Breathing_zps31npzxq7.jpg

See how my face isn’t bright red and I’m smiling.
Proof that she was good… mostly.

In the middle of her very last set she decided that she had something very important to say that couldn’t wait. She took the device out of her mouth and started to try to talk.
“No honey you have to finish first”

One more breath.
She took it out again.
“BUT…”
“You can tell me after. Keep going”

She put it back in her mouth and danced around on the seat.
Whatever it was, it was eating her up inside.

She finally finished and threw the device into the bin.
“If King Bob is the king, why can’t it be King Kevin? I mean he saved everyone... maybe they just don’t like the name King Kevin”.

Ah the things a three year old finds important.

With breathing done we got ourselves ready to head out again and by 10:00 am we were out the door and on our way to some more beach fun.

Up Next: Beach Fun

“I don’t see why not”.

So.... simple.

We have always made her treatments a priority. As we should. This felt a little like cheating. Which was ridiculous since I wasn’t suggesting we not do it. But ridiculous or not, that’s how I felt.

I get that too.
"But we've always done it that way!"

So?

“Why are you justifying? I already said okay!”

Bed head is a whole other beast when you have curly hair.

Would you prefer.... no hair? :rolleyes2

“All done.”

Niiiice. I like how you have the handrails in the photo.

The crab barely hit the sand before a bird swooped down and grabbed it.

I’d like to think that the bird was simply scooping him up to bring him to his lost relative but…

Yeah. Yeah, that's what happened.

Why do the words "Circle of Life" keep echoing in my ears?

Grumpy was absolutely horrified. He felt like it was his fault. That he had drawn attention to the little crab and offered it up to the birds.
To this day he hates birds.

That's just... and amazing experience!
Just think... It's entirely possible that you are responsible for a creature that will live over 100 years.

Gorgeous shot.

PrincessK was proud of her shell collection…

And look! She has a mesh shell bag!

Seriously, can’t he go on vacation without playing stupid iPad games?

Yeah! What's with that! Sheesh!

He turned the iPad toward me.
“Trying to figure out what type of sea turtle it was.”

Oh.

Oh.

The Cocoa Beach site said that you should put it in a plastic container with sand.

What? And then what?
Feed it to the birds?

Well... do nothing, but escort it to the water.

To IHOP of course!

Yes. It was the third morning in a row.
No I don’t care if you judge.

Not judging in the least.
Do you like it?
Then what better time to go, then on vacation?

“Eat the bacon or we aren’t taking you back to the beach.”

Said no one, ever.

At least I would've put money on that.

Half & Half (also called coffee cream) is 10% fat which means it has about 5 times as much fat as 2% (see how well I did math there).

Gold star for you and your crazy math skillz.

What? 9:20 am is a perfectly acceptable time to purchase wine and beer.

Is there a bad time?

See how my face isn’t bright red and I’m smiling.
Proof that she was good… mostly.

Two pretty ladies.

Quite a good compromise, actually. And kudos for being able to rationalize so well so early in the morning!
Rationalizing is something I do very well... just ask Grumpy :P

It really was.

I prefer to think of my co-workers who are at work.
I do some internal gloating.
Interesting. I prefer not to think about them at all.

Would you prefer.... no hair? :rolleyes2
You have to admit, you can get ready much faster.

So... is it Daddy's job now?
If only.

Niiiice. I like how you have the handrails in the photo.
Thanks. I was trying to capture the serenity of walking on to that beach.

Right!! I still can't believe that happened.

That's just... and amazing experience!
Just think... It's entirely possible that you are responsible for a creature that will live over 100 years.

Gorgeous shot.
Thank you.

What? And then what?
Feed it to the birds?
:rotfl2:
I believe you were supposed to call some authority.

Said no one, ever.

At least I would've put money on that.
Yeah well. That one's not even the worst.
When we go out to buffet you will frequently hear one of us saying "you can have more vegetables when you finish some meat".
Or even better: "if you eat more sausage I'll get you some broccoli"

Interesting. I prefer not to think about them at all.

I really don't. It's usually a fleeting thought as I start my vacation.
When I leave work, I leave work.

You have to admit, you can get ready much faster.

This is true.

Thanks. I was trying to capture the serenity of walking on to that beach.

Success.

I believe you were supposed to call some authority.

"Okay. I want you to replenish the water every 15 minutes until I get there. Also purchase some turtle food at a nearby (i.e. 80 miles away) pet store and feed it in 45 minute increments. Keep it in the shade except give it some sun every 40 minutes for 3 and a half minutes. Keep doing that until I get there. I should be able to make it in six or seven hours, tops. Can you do that?"

"Sorry. While you were talking, I pitched it in the ocean."

When we go out to buffet you will frequently hear one of us saying "you can have more vegetables when you finish some meat".
Or even better: "if you eat more sausage I'll get you some broccoli"

 That's the opposite to Pink Floyd.
"How can you have any meat unless you eat your pudding!"

Real Life Update

I really just wanted to take a few moments and say that I'm very sorry for the length of time between updates. When PrincessK started school I never imagined it would have such an effect on her health. Her clinic warned us that she would get sick a lot at the start but I did not realize the impact this would have.

Since October 1st, PrincessK has been truly well for a total of 10 days.
That's it... 10 days.

Yes we counted.

After everything else she went through with the vomiting she lasted 5 days in a row where she felt well enough to eat. Then she got sick again.

Two weeks ago she had a stuffy nose and then came down with an infection in both eyes.

We got drops for those and then had to put her on antibiotics last Monday because her nose was still stuffy and she had developed a nasty cough. Luckily we had her allergy testing done so we were able to put her on the "good" antibiotics since the testing confirmed that she does not have any allergies.

Yeah for a small win.

On Friday, after improving greatly from the antibiotics, I received a call from the school that she had a headache and didn't want to eat.
I decided to go get her even though it didn't sound too bad.

When I got there to pick her up she was asleep on the chair in the office. It was clear that she had more than a headache.

One touch confirmed that she was burning up.

I got her home and she spent the rest of the day and half of Saturday throwing up :sad2:

As you can imagine, it's been really stressful.

At PrincessK's quarterly clinic appointment on November 28th the dietitian took one look at her height and weight and declared that we were just going to ignore them because she is their "star patient" and they know it's just a bump in the road. She would not tell me the numbers.

I asked Grumpy who went with the nurse when PrincessK was weighed and her weight is just over 44lbs... almost 4lbs lighter than in August :headache:

Luckily, she is still above the "magic line".

What is the "magic line"?
It is the line at which research has shown those with CF will start to show a decline in lung heath.
And that line is the 50th percentile for height to weight.

In August PrincessK was over the 90th.

So it's been a battle. Grumpy and I are both... drained.
I have made several attempts to write the next installment and I've made some progress but it's just taking a lot longer because honestly I'm mentally and emotionally exhausted.

The up side is that I have vacation coming up. We are all off from December 19th to January 4th.
That should allow us all to feel a bit more rested and give PrincessK some time away from the germ pool that is school.

I have every intention of using that break to make some significant headway on my report.

Thanks to all of you that have stuck in with me.
I promise I will get this train back on track ASAP.

Poor Princess K, hopefully the school break will help her feel better again.

Unfortunately as my husband likes to call them, preschool and school are germ factories which are even worse for those with immune issues.

That's a lot of time home sick. :scared::cold: Sending you and PrincessK some healthy vibes to get rid of all those germs her little germ factory friends are sharing with her!:flower1::flower:

I really just wanted to take a few moments and say that I'm very sorry for the length of time between updates.

Yeah! What's with that!

:rolleyes1 :duck:

When PrincessK started school I never imagined it would have such an effect on her health. Her clinic warned us that she would get sick a lot at the start but I did not realize the impact this would have.

Ah yes. Early school years... Germ warfare at its finest.
It gets better as they get older.
Not a lot, but some.

Since October 1st, PrincessK has been truly well for a total of 10 days.
That's it... 10 days.

 Oh, man!

When I got there to pick her up she was asleep on the chair in the office. It was clear that she had more than a headache.
One touch confirmed that she was burning up.

I've been there.
"Hi! Where's Elle?"
"Oh, she's sleeping."
"Sleeping? What do you mean sleeping?"
<go check... asleep... and on fire.>
"Okay, well, thanks, gotta run to the hospital now. Bye!"

As you can imagine, it's been really stressful.

I don't have to imagine. I know how stressful it is.
Hang in there.

So it's been a battle. Grumpy and I are both... drained.

Thanks to all of you that have stuck in with me.
I promise I will get this train back on track ASAP.

Take your time. Do what you need to do and take care of yourselves first.

I am sorry she hasn't been feeling great, but am happy she has a days off so hopefully she can get a little better.

Sending you positive vibes and hugs!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

So it appears that I lied... well not lied exactly. I said I was going to work on this sucker over the holidays and I meant it when I said it but clearly I didn't follow through.

This is the part where I would normally apologize.
Except that I'm not actually sorry

I'd like to say that I am but it would be a lie.

You see I spent the entire holiday relaxing and spending time with my family.
We watched movies and played games.
Baked cookies and shared meals.
Read books and snuggled together.

It was absolutely wonderful!

I can't say there was no stress.
PrincessK was sick again and words like sinusitis, polyps, and surgery were thrown around.
But it was much easier to handle because we felt so relaxed.

Looking back to before the holiday now I can clearly see that I was not handling the stress of everything as well as I thought.
It was having a huge affect on my physical and emotional well-being and I was just too stubborn to see it.

But today I feel wonderful.
Rested and happy.

And ready to get this show on the road... off I go to work on the next update :thumbsup2

Poor girl. Happy to hear you were all able to just relax and enjoy the holidays together. Hope she's feeling better!

So it appears that I lied... well not lied exactly. I said I was going to work on this sucker over the holidays and I meant it when I said it but clearly I didn't follow through.

LIES!!!!!

Oh dear. Is she feeling better now?

Looking forward to it!
