Are we nuts? WDW with a 9 week old (and a 2.75 year old) UPDATED 5/31! Pg 2 Post 27

I'm glad people are still reading it- after reading everyone elses I'm wondering if it's too detail oriented and long (read BORING) but at the same time I figure anyone planning on going with an infant may appreciate that...

iluvmickeytown- the baby will be three months tomorrow, I can't beleive it! Aside from nursing every two hours or so he was a breeze to take along. For the most part I just fed him where ever we were so we didn't lose much time, but he fusses as he latches on so it was a pain in the butt to try and keep from flashing everyone :teeth: Bringing the carrier helped to when we were doing lots of rides. He was also fussy a lot, but he always has been unless someone is holding him. Thankfully he's on his way out of that phase! If you want to go to MK I say go for it, just be prepared for lots of feedings to keep up hydration (whether nursing or bottle feeding). I also kept a spray bottle of water to lightly mist him when it got super hot.

Loving the report :) . Looking forward to more :thumbsup2 .

ryan~ So glad you found dh's wallet! I must say your report has me intrigued to try ToT now. I will add that to my must-do list for our next trip! And don't worry about your report being too long. You've read mine so you know how detail-oriented I am. I always wonder if people think it's too long but then I remember that when it comes to trip-planning the more details the better. I agree that people probably appreciate the extra info. I know I always do! Can't wait to read more! :)

Hi Ryan, I'm finally getting to read your post. Sounds like a busy trip! You guys really are night owls!

I never did make it to any baby stations, whenever Leif needed nursing we were always too far from one. Maybe I'll visit one next trip? :confused3

Glad the tickets and the wallet worked out!

Looking forward to the rest.

Ryan840 - I'm so glad that the wallet was found! :thumbsup2 You are one brave lady to ride ToT too. I am way too chicken to ever ride it. I can't wait to read more! :teeth:

Day Three- A Free Day

We woke up sometime around 11:00 I think, and got ready to go to Wal-mart for some groceries, cash for mousekeeping and a roll of pennies for the penny presses (DS loves pennies, so we were really excited about doing them with him). I fed the baby as DH got himself and DS ready, then he took the baby while I got ready and we were out the door pretty quickly. Did I mention how much time we saved with the zip loc bags? It’s one of the best DIS tips out there! :thumbsup2 (The bags came in handy during the rest of the trip too, especially for wet/dirty clothes at the parks.)

Before leaving for Wal-mart we stopped to buy a refillable mug, pick up a property map and get directions (which were for a Wal-mart about 10 or 15 miles away according to the CM). I don’t know if they built a new one or it was always there, but we stumbled upon one within about five minutes of leaving OKW, and it wasn’t the one we had been to the year before. When we got there we decided to split up to make things quicker, so DH took the baby and I took DS and we grabbed our goods. We met back up and the baby was crying to eat already so I reached into my back pocket to grab my wallet (I left my purse at home and put my license, credit card and room key in it- it was so easy to access and we had one less thing to worry about) and it was gone! :faint: I started to panic, thinking again about how we just can’t have a vacation that goes smoothly, and tried desperately to remember if I had taken it out for some reason… I made sure I had it when we left the room because I didn’t want to get all the way there and then have to turn around, so I knew it wasn’t there… It couldn’t possibly have fallen out because not only was it metal (yes, metal- I think its actual purpose is a cigarette case) and I would have heard it, but my back pocket was buttoned when I went to check for it. I asked DH if I had given it to him already, and of course now he thought I was joking… We both tried to remember if I had taken out for any reason and couldn’t think of anything. Wonderful, here we go again… :guilty:

Since I never got out of the car until we got to Wal-mart, DH ran to check it and was gone a pretty long time. Sitting there with my finger in the baby’s mouth to keep him quiet while entertaining DS, I felt like ripping my hair out. Finally he comes back, saying that he looked everywhere and was just about to give up when he looked under the map and found it. I guess I never put it in my pocket when we left, I just set it in the center console, which is not like me. Once again, crisis averted! party: We quickly paid and got our pennies/cash, then went back to the car where I fed the baby before leaving.

We headed back to the room and had a light breakfast (if you can call a meal breakfast after 12 pm), DS took a break and watched TV while the baby took a nap, and DH and I cleaned up the room and got our stuff together to go to the pool after lunch at Olivia’s. Our reservation was for 3:40 and we were about 10 minutes late because I couldn’t stop cleaning (I have a touch of OCD) (OK, more than a touch :rolleyes1 ) and sort of lost track of the time. I was feeling all guilty when we got there, thinking it would be busy because that’s what they told me at check-in when I asked if I should bother making an ADR… We were the only people there besides a table in the back that was finishing up. The service was good, again a little slow (which I didn’t understand because we were now the ONLY people in there) but we weren’t in a hurry so I didn’t care. I fed the baby and we still hadn’t ordered or even received our drinks by the time he was done (he is a pretty quick eater but since we were the only people in there it shouldn’t have taken anywhere near that long). Once we ordered DH ran out to put our towels in the wash so they would be fresh for tonight’s showers. We finally got our food, and it was delicious! For appetizers we had the crab cakes and the artichoke dip (my mouth is watering just thinking about it!), for entrees we had the club sandwich and the Monte Carlo, and for dessert we had the key lime tart and the chocolate cake (yummy yummy yummy). We had so much food that I didn’t even eat my sandwich (I did try it though, it was great) and we only ate half of our desserts.

When we were done DH put the towels in the dryer then ran our food back to the room while I got us situated at the pool. I bought the baby a romper online that covered him from head to toe to protect his skin from the sun and put him in an inflatable kid’s boat so we could all go swimming together, and the soothing motion of the boat quickly rocked him to sleep. :cloud9: DH and I commented on how nice it must be to relax like that, wishing we were able to. We had a great time in the pool, DH and I taking turns going down the slide while the other watched the kids, DS laughing and loving it when we came down. A little while later the baby woke up wanting to eat, so we got out and took DS over to the kiddie pool to play and I grabbed an empty lounge chair and fed him.

We stayed there a while longer since DS was having the time of his life, and at about 7:00 we headed back to the room to shower and get ready for our 9:00 seating at Chef Mickey’s. We gave DS a quick bath then put him down for a short nap, then DH took a shower with the baby (we didn’t bother with bringing a bathtub for him, we barely had enough room in our suitcases as it was!) and put him down for a nap too. By the time I was showered and ready it was after 8:00 so we packed up the car and headed out the door.

After we checked in at Chef Mickey’s I decided to feed the baby, so we went out towards the gift shops and sat down in front of the snow globe. While he waited DS watched the monorail, which was becoming a huge fascination for him. We decided it would be a good time to take him to get his first pressed penny, so DH took him over to the machines- a few minutes later he came running back to me, so excited to tell me all about it and show me his new “smashed” penny. As soon as they got back and the baby finished eating, the buzzer went off and we headed back into the restaurant, stopping to have our picture taken before sitting down.

We didn’t see Donald on the way in because we didn’t have time, and when we were seated we barely had time to get the cameras out before Goofy arrived. Goofy is one of DS’s favorites (actually they were all his favorites, that’s why we go there) so we were excited to see how he reacted this year. He was shy like last year, but not as bad and though he was quiet we could tell he loved it- he just didn’t know what to do. The baby absolutely loved Goofy- he was staring at him and flashing huge smiles while wriggling and flailing his arms, and we got it all on video! He liked the other characters too but not as much as Goofy. When Mickey Mouse came around DS (with our encouragement) told him how happy he was when he saved the day at Fantasmic. Minnie Mouse, Chip and Dale all made their rounds (Minnie came by a couple of times- she was the baby’s second favorite) and DS was quiet again, still loving it though. When the characters weren’t at the table he wouldn’t stop talking, and he loved pointing out who was near by and waving the napkins around. The food was very good, the service was ok. She was friendly but forgetful and (surprise) a little slow. I probably sound impatient or hard to please, but I’m not. The service in WDW truly was slower than it should have been, but it never upset me or anything. I used to wait tables so I know what it’s like, and I’m very laid back when it comes to rating service. Anyway, back to the meal… As we finished eating and started thinking about dessert, we noticed the characters were leaving, and we hadn’t seen Donald! I’m still bummed about that one because DS really likes him. :sad1: We ate dessert and waited for the bill, and finally left around 10:30.

We decided to check out the gift shops while we were there, but only had time to see one before they closed. We went back down to the lobby and I fed the baby before we left- DS had lots of fun running around in the empty lobby while he waited… I stopped by the restroom before we left and noticed the arcade so we took DS to play for a few minutes since he had been so good. We took some pictures in the photo booth and played a few games, and DS was having so much fun he didn’t want to leave. We finished up around midnight, but the ticket redemption counter closed at 11:30 so we couldn’t get his prizes (which broke his heart). We told him that we would come back tomorrow since we would be at MK anyway, and he felt a little better. We went home and finished cleaning the room and getting ready for the parks, and actually got to bed early- around 1:30 :teeth:

Day Four- Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom

The plan for today was to get to AK by 11:00 and leave around 4:00, but that wasn’t how it went. DH (who has no sense of urgency) woke up around 9:45 and got ready, then made breakfast for DS. While DS was eating he made our breakfast and then finally decided to wake me up, handing me a hungry baby and breakfast at the same time. I fed the baby and tried to eat, and DH and DS finished breakfast at a painfully slow rate. By the time the baby and I were done eating DS still wasn’t dressed and I was getting pretty upset about how late it was and how slow DH was moving. I am NOT a morning person, so I was crabby and ended up snapping at DH for making us so late and then we both felt bad (but we shrugged it off). Before leaving DS found a present from Mickey Mouse- a wallet for his pennies that even had some Disney Dollars in it. :woohoo:

By the time we left the room it was 11:40! We arrived at AK and remembered to use our Diamond Parking Pass so it was a short walk to the gates. I wanted to stop at the gift shop outside the park to get Pal Mickey a safari outfit before going in, and we were in there quite a while looking around. We bought the safari outfit and a stuffed monkey (mama and baby) for the baby, and DS used his Disney Dollars for a canteen and a dinosaur baseball. They also had a pressed penny machine there, so of course DS had to get one… It was about 12:30 by the time we got through security and into the park, and it was clear that we wouldn’t be seeing much today.

We grabbed a map and times guide and circled the things we really wanted to do, then planned our route. First stop: The Festival of the Lion King. We stopped for some PhotoPass photos in front of the Tree of Life and worked our way over to the theater, looking at some of the animals along the way. When we got there we had about 45 minutes until the next show and debated going to do something else to kill some time, but since it was 92 and we were melting we decided just to wait in the shade. There were only a few people in line before us so when we finally got in we were able to pick our seats and I don’t think they could have been better- first row right on the aisle in the Lion section! Simba was only a few feet away and we got to see lots of action there.

I fed the baby while we waited, and he finished just in time for it to start. During the show Scar came over and stared DS down, and he just leaned into me staring back at him with huge eyes, not knowing what to do. One of the guys on stilts came over and stared at him too, slamming a foot on the bleacher right in front of him. It was in time with the music and very loud and DS just didn’t know what to think! (I thought it was pretty cool, and we could tell DS was amused even though it scared him). Timone also came and sat next to us for a little while, giving DH a hug and kiss and playing with the baby. I didn’t get the video camera going quick enough to get it, but it was really cute. That was our first time seeing the show, and we all loved it- if you’re going to AK it’s definitely a must see.

We exited the theater and had no idea where the stroller was (the stroller park was mobbed and had more strollers than I’d seen anywhere before) so I took the boys and sat in a shady area while DH started searching. By the time we found it and got loaded up it was 3:00, and we were really upset about how little we had done. We decided that we would stay for the EMH and see our must sees, and then just go to MK to see Wishes. Not letting it get us down, we went to Pizzafari for lunch- I had the Hot Italian Style Sandwich and DH had the Chicken Parmesan, and we both had the chocolate cake which was delicious! DS had a pb&j meal and some of our dessert. He was a little antsy during the meal and learned the hard way not to stand and play around on chairs :headache: - we quickly decided that a nap would be a good idea.

I decided to do Expedition Everest while he slept, so we finished eating and headed over there. On the way we stopped to get our EMH bracelets and I fed the baby as we walked. While I was feeding him he had a major diaper explosion :scared: and we were nowhere near a changing area, so we ran to a nearby boulder where a lady and her two young grandchildren were sitting and explained our emergency to her, asking if she would mind if we cleaned him up right there. One laughing grandma, two people, eight wipes and about ten minutes later he was clean and changed into a new outfit, still screaming over the rude interruption of his meal. DS had now fallen asleep and once I got the baby back to his eating session we had a peaceful (although extremely hot) walk to EE.

The fast passes had been distributed for the day, so I stood in line for about 40 minutes in front of a group of very smelly 13 year old boys. All I could think was thank God I’m not behind them… :crazy2: This would be the first of many times I attracted stinky people this trip, oh joy! I must say that they were very polite and well behaved, and aside from the smell (which was mostly one boy) I would be proud if my boys turned out like them. I really liked the queue and the Yeti Museum, it was great theming. The ride was really fun, but I did have the surprise ruined for me and I think I would have loved it even more if I hadn’t known about it. I won’t mention what it is for the two people out there who manage to make it all the way without finding out… I had a coupon for a free photo but I didn’t read it closely enough and we would have had to go all the way to the front of the park to get the voucher, then trek all the way back to redeem it so I decided it wasn’t worth it and passed it off to some people in the front of the park later in the day.

DS was still sleeping when I got back so we headed over to Kali River Rapids so I could cool off. The fast passes there were also gone, but the wait time was only 20 minutes (and it actually went a bit faster I think) so I left DH and the boys and got in line. As I was walking up I noticed a couple standing in front of a sewer, covering their little girl (who looked to be 5 or 6) as she hovered over it and went to the bathroom. I guess when you gotta go you gotta go… The ride was fun- DH got a good picture of me coming under the bridge and I when I got off I laughed at the signs that said “You will get wet, you may get soaked” since our entire raft come out drenched! It was really refreshing to be wet in the hot sun, and I felt great the rest of the day as my clothes slowly dried. It was a little after 5:00 now and the only thing still open on our must see list was Kilimanjaro Safari, so we headed over there and I fed the baby on the way. Usually I have no problems walking and nursing, but with all the ups and downs and winding through crowds in WDW, it was really tough!

We got to KS and there wasn’t really a wait to board, and a few minutes later we (along with only 6 other people) were on our way. DS really liked seeing the animals, even though we didn’t see any close up except for a couple of rhinos that we could have reached out and touched. DH got a great shot of them too… It was close to 6:30 when we were done and we decided to beat the rush and leave right away, giving us a little time at MK before Wishes.

It was really nice not having a long walk back to the car, and we were on our way pretty quickly. When we got there we used the Diamond Parking again and I fed the baby while DH got the stroller loaded up. Again, it was great not having to unload the stroller and get on the tram, then get off and load it all back up again- all while juggling two kids… We took the monorail (DS wouldn’t have it any other way, he was obsessed) and when we got there headed straight for Fantasyland.

The tea cups didn’t have much of a line so DS and I decided to ride and he thought they were the greatest. I was afraid to go too fast so I tested the waters for a few seconds and he did great, but I wasn’t going to push my luck and make him sick. After that we took him to Pooh’s Playful Spot and let him do his own thing for a while. He had been going along with whatever we decided for most of the trip, so we wanted him to have some free time. I think this is the best themed play area in WDW, I’m so glad they did it.

Wishes was at 9:00 so around 8:15 we decided to get going- we rode Winnie the Pooh on the way out of Fantasyland and stopped at Cosmic Rays to get dinner to go. The food was really good- I got the BBQ rib meal, DH got chicken fingers and fries to share with DS, and we both had the triple chocolate cake (of course) which DS really enjoyed.

82139post16.jpg

We headed to our favorite viewing spot- the bridge to Tomorrowland- and got a great spot along the wall with only about ten minutes to go. The baby was getting fussy so I put him in the carrier and we ate our dinner, finishing just in time. DS has always loved fireworks, but tonight he decided he was afraid of them and refused to watch so he hid behind the wall until they were over. After that we sat on a nearby bench and I fed the baby while the crowds thinned out, and just as we finished a couple of CM’s came over to shoo us out. Before they did they took DS over to the bridge to show him some huge tadpoles that were in the water, and they talked and played with him for a couple minutes, which he loved.

Some cool pictures of Wishes

82139post14.jpg

As we made our way out the stores along Main Street were still open so we stopped at The Emporium and got another pressed penny for DS, still waiting for the crowds to thin a bit more. When we got to the monorail I remembered hearing that you can ride up front so we asked a CM about it and he told us we’d have to wait for the next car and hope it was empty, which it was. We didn’t feel like folding up the stroller so DH and the baby rode in the car behind us while DS and I climbed into the front car. DS was thought he was so cool in there, he was adorable! The driver was not very friendly, which was disappointing because I know DS would have had even more fun if he had talked to him- he wasn’t unfriendly, he just never said anything unless I asked him a question (and didn’t give much in the way of answers).

When we got back to the car we headed to The Contemporary to redeem DS’s arcade tickets and check out the other gift shop. After that we went home and showered, and got to bed extra early- 1:00! That’s it for now, sorry it’s taking so long to write! I will try to get part four done by the end of the weekend if I can!

Sure sounds like all of you had a wonderful time on your trip after a bit of a rocky start. I'm glad you were able to get your ticket situation fixed, and that your husband's wallet was located (I lost a wallet on vacation once--not fun).

Your kids are adorable. They really look like happy little guys :)

Thanks for posting.

Sounds like you had a really nice trip!! It is nice to see how your dh is willing to let you go stand in line for the "BIG" rides while he watches the kids! It is nice to just take it slow when you have little kids with you, and you guys did that for sure!! Can't wait to read more!

LOL, that's just his excuse- he doesn't like going on most of them!

Wow, we should have set a time and place to meet b/c it sounds like we did a lot of the same parks on the same nights. We were at MK during EMH with you and we were also at AK during EMH with you! Dh also doesn't like the big rides, except Kali River Rapids, and he usually watched Kylie if there was a big one I wanted to ride. We could have let the guys watch the kids and rode some rides together! We are hoping to go back next year at the same time and if you guys go again we will definitely have to meet up at some point! I could use someone who is brave enough to ride some things with me! ;)

Oh, and I am sorry you didn't see Donald. Kylie really likes Donald too b/c of her whole duck fascination thing but Donald wasn't at Chef Mickey's when we ate there. Thankfully she did get to see him at Character Connection at Epcot the 1st time we went to it (we went twice and he wasn't there the 2nd time). All of your pics are great too! :)

:sunny: Still enjoying your report! I had no idea Chef Mickey's was opened that late. I might have to save that tip for a later trip ;) .

I was thinking the same thing reading your report- it's amazing that we were in so many places at the same time and never saw each other! We haven't decided yet if we're going to WDW next year because we'll be going to DL in October (2007) and it would be pretty expensive to do both in one year... If we do go it will definately be the same time, it's the only time we've ever been and we love it! I'm sure if we do we can meet up, it seems like you have the same strategy as me- EMH, EMH, EMH!

vald- we got the last seating at Chef Mickey's, I had to cancel my earlier one a couple weeks before we left and that was all they had for the whole week! It worked out pretty nice though since we were up so late the whole week.

If anyone is still subscribed I just wanted to pop in and say bear with me! I'm sorry I haven't worked on my report for so long, I just have soo much going on right now- 2 birthday parties to plan, house hunting, baby who won't let you put him down, getting my parents house ready for the first party (no small feat, it's in need of major help), it's nuts! I promise that I will get back to it one of these days :teeth:

I wish i would of taken vacations when my kids were little. You sound like you had everything under control.

:) Ryan,
I'm still here. Take your time. Good luck with the parties  .
