Are there condos or townhouses to rent near DLR?

I would love to take my parents with us next summer to visit DLR. I would like to find a place to stay that is reasonably close to DL.

I really want the trip to be a gift from my husband and I but if I rent two hotel rooms, I am afraid that my parents will feel like they need to pay. If we had a condo or something, I can say, come along, we have the extra room. I hope that makes sense!

The other issue to consider is that I am pretty sure that we will need an scooter for my step-father for long distances. Would be be better off renting from an off-site company and staying at a hotel close to DLR? I could always be vague about where we are staying and then have it all taken care of when we arrive.

I am looking at something that is in the $200 a night price range for either situation. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Check the Residence Inn Maingate, we haven't stayed there but are contemplating it for our next trip as they have full kitchens.

There are vacation club villas at the Grand Californian on-site. Don't know how much those are going to run -- I doubt they are going to be in the $200/night range in the summer.

If you are considering Residence Inn -- I would try Garden Grove. It's a slightly longer drive, but the staff is far friendlier than Maingate, the beds are better and the layout is better for scooters/wheelchairs. Maingate is individual cottages w/ multiple steps and staircases. Garden Grove is one building with an elevator and the breakfast is 1 million times better. If you call and ask, they will tell you that you can walk from Maingate to the park. Let me just tell you that after walking around the park for 14 hours, you can't walk to Maingate. Well, I can't. Maybe you can!

I'm sure you are right. I think that any on property hotel is going to be more than we want to spend.

We stayed at the Hojo for 8 nights this summer and paide between $69-$84 a night. We were able to get the entertainment rate for a couple of nights.

I was hoping to find a house, condo or something to rent that would be large enough to accomodate our party of 6. We can't really do a larger single room or suite, unless there are actually 2 totally separate sleeping rooms with doors. My step-father snores very loudly and I can't sleep like that!

I just checked Residence Inn and they have a 2 bedroom suite that might work. The rate is $289 a night. It sounds like we might get a better rate by getting 2 smaller rooms somewhere else.

I am sure I can't walk it either, or rather, I don't WANT to walk it!

I have stayed at the RI Maingate numerous times and they have fairly large suites.

We have stayed many times at the Marriott Residence Inn Maingate and have enjoyed our stay. We love using the full kitchen and the hotel serves a yummy breakfast each day. We always need a 2 bedroom unit because of the number of people in our room. I know that the hotel has many room configurations but all of their 2 bedroom suites are on the second floor (no elevators). If you need a 2 bedroom suite and your father needs a scooter that might be a problem for this hotel. When my mom is with us (and she uses a cane) and we stay at this hotel she just rents her scooter at the park for daily use. Perhaps there is a better location that also has a kitchen (which is a definite plus for us at this hotel)?

We will be staying at GC for our next trip so that my mom can just rent a scooter for the duration of our trip. But alas -- no kitchen (until the GVC opens in September).

I think that it is really wonderful that you are trying to find a way to treat your parents without them feeling like they need to throw cash at you. Good luck!

Have to disagree. I have stayed at both, it only took one time at the GG site. It is under a 1/2 mile walk and easlily done if you do not mind walking or you could take the ART. I found both the breakfasts virtually the same and I love the grocery shopping they will do for you saving alot of time. We paid $149.00/night thru AAA two years ago. Got another discount by calling the place and asking for there best rate. Never had an issue with the staff either.

We have stayed at the Homewood Suites by Hilton in Garden Grove. They have 2 BR suites and they offer a senior and AAA discount. I would check their online reservation system for a quote then call them direct and ask what is the best rate they can give you for the dates. See if it is lower than their online quote. Also, explain about your FIL and they might be able to reserve a certain room for you that will help your group. Great free brkfst there as well.

I appreciate all the replies. Here is a little more information in case anyone is interested and in case it helps with your answers.

Step-father can walk up stairs. He does not use any type of mobilty device on a daily basis. He has heart problems and has had back surgery and he will be 72 by next summer. I know that he cannot make the walk to and from the park even from the GCH, not several times a day and not through the parks.

We will probably try to stay few days near the beach as well, in addition to the days at DLR. I am thinking of a total of 8 or 9 nights in California.

GCH is not going to be an option for us financially. I want to still be able to eat while we are there!

I am going to assume that renting a scooter from an off-site rental place is a given. I guess we would need a ground floor room or access to an elevator so that he can charge it at night. I think scooters need to be charged, right?

I may trying calling and seeing if there is a better rate than the one on the website for Residence Inn. ($289) At that price, we might be better off with 2 rooms.

Marriott also has TownePlace suites which is like a cheaper version of Residence Inn. They have 2 room suites with 1 Queen bed in each room, plus a sofa bed. I haven't stayed at the one in Anaheim, but we have stayed at TownePlace in another city and love staying there. They do have full kitchens in the suites. They are smaller than RI, but so much cheaper. The rate through AAA is less than $150. I'm not sure when you are going, but you can check out Marriott's website. The TPS is about 2.5 miles from DL.

We had a similar situation a couple of years ago with my dad needing a scooter. I think the easiest thing to do is stay as close to the park entrance as you possibly can. Rent a scooter from an off-site company and have it delivered to the hotel (try Deckert's). Then he can ride it from the hotel room, across the street and down the path to the entrance plaza.

There are several hotels on that stretch of Harbor that have suites. We just stayed at the Desert Inn and Suites in a 2-bedroom suite a few weeks ago. It had a small parlor with a sofabed. There were 2 separate bedrooms, each with 2 queens. If you're worried about your father-in-law's snoring, you can close 2 doors between the bedrooms. Other hotels on that row with suites include The Camelot, Carousel and Tropicana, among others. We chose Desert Inn because the largest suites had 2 bathrooms. There is an elevator so he could ride the scooter up to the room everyday and plug it in to charge. My dad charged his every night and never had a problem with the battery.

If you stay much further away than that, you'd have to drive to the parks everyday making it hard to transport the scooter. Or you'd have to rent one each day at the parks. I think it's cheaper, easier and you get a better quality scooter renting off-site.
