Are there any Christian ROCK fans out there?

Guess I don't know the genre well enough to know the difference between "worship bands" and other bands. I'm a classical music guy mostly and they are just friends of mind. I know them, actually, because one of them is married to one of my classical music colleagues.

Worship lyrics are very focused on scripture and mention Jesus Christ specifically. IMHO they often come off very in-your-face preachy, which I don't like.

I prefer a more subtle approach in lyrics. I also prefer bands that are a lot heavier and edgier. :)

my nephew is the bass player in The Wedding. Its a little too headbanging for me tho.

I've just recently started getting into christian rock - its much better than my stereotype for it was. So far, I really like Casting Crowns, but they are the only band I really know by name so far since I'm new to it. We just came back from a road trip, and a few times I would hear a song on the radio that I recognized, and I asked my DH each time I heard them if he realized that it was a Christian band. He said he had no idea and that the music sounded like regular rock (obviously he wasn't listening to the words LOL). I've been much more conscientious about what my kids listen to on the radio, and its very nice to be able to keep a station on without having to cringe when I hear something bad on the radio and pray that they didn't hear it (there's nothing quite like having a 3 year old singing "Riding Dirty" and saying its his favorite song... :sad2: )

I got a heads up that they are announcing a "major rock act" in a couple of days, but I can't figure out who it could be. I know for sure it's not Flyleaf, P.O.D., or Skillet because they are all otherwise engaged. They are really the biggest Christian rock bands out there right now, and Pillar is already on the bill. :confused3

Keep us posted! I'd be interested to hear who it is. :) DS stays much more in the loop than I do concerning the newer groups coming up through the ranks. He is friends w/a family that do a little recording as well as some performing at some of the festivals, so he gets wind of the newer stuff before we do. I'm always about 5/10 years behind. LOL!

Pooki, I'm glad you found some music you're comfortable sharing with your kids. *There's some great Christian stuff (FINALLY!) out there now!* I felt very much the same way you do, when DS was little. At 17, he's completely gravitated to the Christian stuff now. Now he frowns at me if I listen to anything else. Thought I'd have to save my Collective Soul CDs from being pitched out the car window the other day. Little twirp!

I'm very, very discerning. I put my nose up at a lot of stuff-and HATE "gimmicks." Stryper was a no-talent gimmick.

Anne

Aww you got caught in the gimmick tho.

Stryper was the only thing in town in their day, so yes it turned into a gimmick, but realize, these guys are better live than the recordings were. You can tone down a recording but not a live performance.

Also try Touniquet, they were awsome too.

I grew up on early Amy Grant, Degrarmo & Key, 80's Petra, Bryan Duncan and Stryper.

Have a good day.

I really like contemporary christian music. As of alternative christian rock, I like DC Talk,Toby Mac, Jars of Clay, Third Day(they are more southern rock).
At my church, our church band plays a lot of alternative christian rock, some harder christian rock, too. Actually they play most genres of christian pop and alternative rock.

I saw them several times, they were terrible. I really saw no talent there.

Look at (dare I say) Slipknot. There's a gimmick for sure, but there's also some talent in the band. I'm not a fan of their music, but I have to appreciate the talent behind it.

Mercy Me has two songs that I have heard on the radio. One of them is "I Can Only Imagine" and yes, you can call it a worship song (but I still love it as it has a sentimental meaning to me). I forgot the name of the other song, but there is one mainstream CT station we get here on L.I. and they play Mercy Me.

DH and I went to see three Christian bands on tour together a few years ago. They were Mercy Me, Dave Crowder Band and Michael W. Smith. The concert was compeltely sold out and all three bands were excellent!

Those that have mentioned Switchfoot: When I first heard them, I thought it was U2. But was shocked to find out it wasn't, that it was a Christian band.

Another good Christian band is Petra! They have been around since the 80's.

our area is kind of a "hot" christian music area, so most of the christian bands perform here at sometime. What I really like is how most of the ticket prices are much lower than what you usually pay. I know DS went to see several groups last year and the most he paid was $15.

thats a link to a local kid that DS went to high school with. I am not sure that he is considered a christian artist anymore, but he went to our local christian college and he had a song in the movie The Bridge to Terabithia.

My DS found a group that he liked last year called Our Hearts Hero. They spent sometime at a couple of different events with them last year and are hoping that more people enjoy them.

Mmmm...Collective Soul ;)

LOL! Okay I can't tell... are you teasing me and would really actually prefer to help my son throw them out onto the Interstate? :rotfl:

Cybrkitn, "I Can Only Imagine" is a beautiful song isn't it? ...and love David Crowder. He's a hoot in concert! Love the keytar! :p

I listen to a lot of genres, but it seems that lately some of the best music that's been coming across my desk has been Christian rock.

P.O.D., Skillet, Pillar, Decyfer Down, Need to Breathe, Underoath, etc.

Any other fans out there?

Anne

Thanks! I've never heard of them but I'm going to go get some and give them a listen. :goodvibes

Just the way I like it! My current favorite is Matt Redmon...'Blessed Be your Name'.

As far as Christian rock, yeah I like that too. Kutless, Switchfoot, Jars of Clay. My daughter just went to an Underoath concert in our area and loved them. :)

Have you ever seen the lead singer?

Great music, too! :thumbsup2

I love Collective Soul. I was lucky to see them several times in smaller venues in Iowa City.

Ohhhh yes!! :cloud9: Both Roland boys actually. Sigh. I do believe I've come close to wearing holes in the DVD that features the Atlanta Youth Orchestra. Although the Morroccan disc isn't anything to sneeze at either.

I just got into Audio Adrenaline now that they are breaking up. I am more of a MercyMe, Michael W. Smith person. My nephew is a big fan of Kutlass, I think I have one song.

I saw that tour, it's where I really took notice of MercyMe (I went for Michael W. Smith). I loved Petra in High School, I have More Power To You and a few others on my Ipod.

That it is. It was played at my SIL's wake last year. So it's very special to me. But I loved the song before that.
