Are there any charges for split plates?

Hi

I'm planning a trip in December and haven't been at WDW for 4 years.
I know Disneyland's restaurants have a policy of charging you a fee if you decide to split a meal/get an extra plate. Does anyone know if this is true for any of the WDW restaurants? If so, how much would be the charge?

Thanks for any help.

No charge that I am aware of. As there is no resort-wide policy this would be up to the individual restaurant and I don't recall seeing any reports where a charge was required.

Sharing is not permitted, of course, at buffets and all you can eat meals. (The exception there is children under age 3)

I often split a dinner with a niece and we've never had a split plate charge at WDW.

Shula's is the only restaurant I know of that has a fee for split plates.

We split at Marrakesh for no extra charge.... Many times the portions are so large that it's not necessary to order so much! I split when it's a good $$$ saver.:flower3:

I do understand no sharing at buffets, but what the crap, just what does Disneyland charge for, actually splitting up the food on two different plates?
Or just charging you for getting an actual plate and you splitting it up? Good Lord!! How much do they charge for this?

Restaurants that charge to split plates do so based on the logic that plate splitters are ordering one dish rather than the two that the restaurant could reasonably expect to sell to two people.

It's sort of like the single supplement charged for cruising (one person booking a double occupancy accommodation on a cruise ship is usually charged 50% - 75% more that the stated per person rate in order to make up for there being only one person using the accommodation when it's priced for two). Makes up for some of the monetary loss the restaurant experiences when two people split one plate.

That sounds crazy. Never heard of it at the world. Hey, I wonder what they would do if they had solo diners? Or if they had a ressie for two and someone did'nt show? It is very interesting though.

Wow, I get it about the cruise lines and such, just went to cruise.com and it is about 300 bucks more a single cruiser than for two people. But is there a whole lot of people that cruise alone?

I've never heard of anyone getting charged a plate fee at Disneyworld, but "outside the world" it's more common. My DD & friends were charged $5 plate fee when they split entrees at Olive Garden (even though the total for the table with entrees, drinks & desserts worked out to more than $20 per person spent.) When we were in Chicago last summer, several of the downtown restaurants specified plate charges for splitting meals.

Not comparable. A solo diner would likely order only one meal anyway. No money lost to the restaurant there.

I have booked double occupancy trips for just myself and been charged a single supplement. It's part of what one has to expect traveling alone. Some hotels do the same thing - their room prices are based on double occupancy, so one person occupying a room priced for two would need to pay a supplement.

And I am sure there are far more persons who cruise with one person in one stateroom than you think there are.

Now, this has happened with me and my husband I can think of once, I was hungry and he was'nt at all and we went into a resturant and I ordered a plate and he did'nt eat anything at all. Is this a case for a split plate charge? Charge you for just sitting there? Of course they did'nt charge us any extra, but this made me think about this. I don't think I agree at all with this, but I am glad I am learning a little bit about it!!!!!!

That is an interesting idea....why don't they charge you to just sit there if they have a plate splitting charge? Hmmmmm....interesting. But maybe the rationale is the extra plate, extra time to split it, extra place setting, you usually get a larger portion of sides....

What do they do if you just share off of one plate? No charge then is there?

This is a very interesting thread....I would like to hear from someone really in the know like a restaurant manager/owner where they do this.

Well, if they do give you a little extra on the split plates, and it does take a little extra effort on part of the staff I suppose I can see adding a little extra to the price. But what about the situation I spoke of above, just sitting there and not eating. I am glad to see that others too seem to find this interesting. Still learning things on the DIS!!!
