It depends.
We've stayed at the Beach Club Villas, the Yacht Club and the AKL. They have all been nice, but they are not as nice as what they cost. For instance, we've stayed at the Orlando Ritz for less than what the Deluxe resorts on property cost and it was far nicer. What you're paying for is being on Disney and the Disney "magic!"
The Deluxe resorts are nice. But I'm not sure they are really good values. We have really grown to dislike a lot of the food on Disney. There just aren't many choices many places.
Using the buses is nice, and since you're going with a lot of people that would probably be really convenient for you. But on our last trip (stayed at AKL with discount code) we also rented a car and drove to several of the parks. It really wasn't that inconvenient....our son actually loved all the trams. LOL. He thought they were great rides!
We are trying Windsor Hills in June mostly because our son just wouldn't sleep in one room with us and we are going to other parks as well as Disney. I do think you should go on site as least once to see what you're (theoretically) missing, but I think there are better values in other hotels and vacation homes.
Have fun no matter what you choose!
