Hello Everyone:

We are heading down tomorrow…unfortunately we go through Atlanta, so i am keeping my fingers crossed!

On previous visits, we were told that parks actually opened about 30 minutes prior to the stated time and it was true!

Is that still true?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Here's what's been happening with Theme Park Openings:

Only MK still offers an actual Rope Drop SHOW along with an inside-the-gates holding area.
MK Gates open approx. 15-20 min. "early."
But, the Rope Drop show is timed so that guests will actually enter the PARK very near the actual opening time.

MK's Rope Drop Ceremony called "Magic Kingdom Welcome" (see location HERE.)

Guests are usually admitted starting about 15-20 minutes before
the posted opening time, to WAIT just inside the gates, in front of the train station (near the "flower Mickey face.")

The ceremony lasts 6-7 minutes or so and starts 6-7 minutes before the scheduled opening time.
There is also a "mini" version (far less "hoopla") that lasts about 2-3 minutes.
There is also an "AUDIO ONLY" version (no characters at all) that lasts under minute.
Which one you will see can be tough to guess.

----------------------------------

DAK no longer offers a Rope Drop SHOW,
AND recently, no longer has an inside-the-park guest holding area.
DAK Gates open approx. 15 min. "early," and guests can enter the park and head
for their attractions of choice at that time.

Epcot does not offer an internal Rope Drop SHOW,
AND no longer offers an inside-the-gates holding area.
There might be a "Welcome to Epcot" audio recording played as a chosen family waves "hello"
to other guests, maybe some confetti involved. (But, it is far below what could be called a "Show.")
Epcot gates (including the International Gateway) will likely open approx. 15 min. "early."
(Sometimes, on rare occasions when the park is very busy... as much as 30 minutes early.)

DHS no longer offers a Rope Drop SHOW.
DHS Gates likely open approx. 15 min. "early."
(DHS has opened as much as 30 min. early, but that's not been the case every day.)

AM EMH entrance times seem to not be affected (figure entering 2-10 minutes before the AM EMH time, as usual.)
On AM EMH days, MK will offer some form of their Rope Drop Show
(may or may not be the "full show")
only for AM EMH guests,
and no show at all for the regular hours open time that morning.

As always, for better positioning in the crowds, arrive well before the posted opening time at all parks.

If staying at a WDW resort, plan to be at the bus stop about 45 min. before you want to ARRIVE at a given park.
(Arriving far too early beats arriving just a minute or two late.)

Just wanted to say that during our January trip, they did not have early RD at Epcot during the days we were there. YMMV.

I'm in the Atlanta area. Please be very careful driving through tomorrow! We already have cars sliding off the road and it is supposed to keep raining and adding to the ice totals all day. The roads will be worse tomorrow than today. The news said to stay in the right hand lanes because they are only treating one lane on the highways. Also remember that many gas stations, fast food, etc. are closed. You might want to fill up your car and your tummies before getting into the Atlanta area.

Ok, taking my mom hat off now. Have a fantastic trip!!!!

The OP is in Seattle, so I suspect they are flying through ATL tomorrow. With any luck.

This was also true for us 2 weeks ago. Also in DHS, we could enter "before" RD...but we were standing in line to ride RnR until 9am - when they actually "started" the ride.

Same for us. On two different days we were held at Tower of Terror and Rock n Roller Coaster until 9:00. Actually, RnRC was after 9:00 and closer to 9:05 (a few people behind us made sure the CM knew that they were unhappy about this), but we were let in the park itself about 10-15 minutes early.

At MK, the rope drop show started 15 minutes early, as well. Then, when they let us in, they held us at Fantasyland (we went through the castle and then there was a rope) until 9:00 and then let us go to our ride. Same thing a couple of days later with Tomorrowland.

At Epcot, on all 3 days, we were allowed in either right at 9:00 or maybe 5 minutes early, but not the 15 minutes that we have been allowed in in the past. They did play the "Good morning" recording from each of the countries, though, which I happen to really enjoy.

No idea about Animal Kingdom. We only went there one day and it wasn't for RD.

Ditto for us. And it was raining. People weren't too happy.

I will only add that at AK a feww weeks ago, we got in 15 minutes early, and you could walk back to some of the rides (I think safari, everest, and the rides in Dino Land were open), but the path between africa and asia was blocked off until 9, and I suspect other paths were the same.

And same as PP have noted at MK -- internal ropes were up. Though I will note that in both cases, we walked at a regular rate down main street, stopping to take pictures and not rushing our 5 year old, and by the time we got to the ropes in tomorrowland and adventureland, we waited less than a minute for them to come down.

Op you should call the airline and try to change your flight. My mom was supposed to travel through Atlanta and they cancel her flight. She is not reschedule until Saturday. Better deal with it before you get to the airport. Some airlines are waving the fees to change flights to avoid the storm.
