Just bought a 2001 Ford Focus Stationwagon yesterday, along with a 4 yr., 48,000 mile extended service plan through Ford (the plan cost $1,030). I'm happy with the car, but I'm having buyer's remorse on the E.S.P. Anybody have any feedback on their experiences, and whether it is worth it? Any good websites I should check out? The car has 31,000 miles on it, and I wonder what the odds are I'll even have any problems until after the E.S.P is up...

Should I cancel, or should I hold on to it? I'm so indecisive...

We have bought them at least four times and made $ on them three times. I wish you had posted BEFORE you bought it, however, b/c I could have told you that the price is NEGOTIBLE. I read that in Consumer Reports before we bought our van and successfully got the price lowered by $200. The other times we bought them, we paid what they said.

Ironically, the last one we bought was also on a vehcile with 31,000 miles. I had the a/c repaired under the contract (about $600). Unfortunately, we had a major repair just a couple thousand miles after it expired.

Two of ours were really useful. I had a van with an electrical problem, and twice used the rental car provision and had the van in the garage about a week. I paid $50 for what I'm sure would have been a $2,000 or so repair.

My dh had brake problems on his Camry about 1,000 miles before the contract expired. The dealer not only fixed the brakes but went over the car with a fine tooth comb and recommended some other things be fixed under warranty. The final bill was about $2,000, which we didn't pay. We literally did nothing to the car except oil changes/tires for two years after that.

We generally buy cars that are 2-3 years old and have low mileage and get the extended warranty. That way we have the lower price of the used car with the peace of mind of a new one.

Extended warrantys/service plans can be a good thing, just make sure you know exactly what it covers, and more importantly, exactly what it doesn't cover.

Me and the missus bought a nice little used Escort wagon a couple of years back and shelled out an extra $1000 for an extended warranty. About a year later the car developed a gas line leak. Turns out our high dollar warranty did not cover that.

Fortunately we found a good local mechanic that fixed it for not an arm and a leg. Unfortunately, 3 days later some stupid little girl in daddy's jeep didn't notice that we were stopped at a red light and plowed into the back of us. Bye Bye Escort.

It is well worth it we got it onour 98 Malibu when we bought it in 99. That January we were hit and the shop said we needed to have the compressor for the AC unit replaced. The insurance company said it was not caused from the accident so they wouldn't pay for the replacement so we left it alone. 2 weeks into the summer it went on us thankfully we had the extra warranty it was replaced free of charge and didn't cost us almost 800 dollars out of pocket.

We had it for ouy 03 ford focus and used it when the stick shift broke it also covered the towing we needed when someone stole our car keys and we needed replacements also we had it for our 99 dodge intrepid when the A/C stoped blowing cold air. So I for one will ALWAYS get one cause they never went to waste yet. My mom decided not to het one on her 96 ford van.she bought it in may and friday the transmission went.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I think maybe I will hold onto the warranty, if I can get them to come down in price a few hundred dollars. When I called to cancel, the person I talked to said she "Could work with me" on the price, if that was the problem, so I'm sure I overpaid!

Hmm, this is an interesting thread. I bought an extended warranty last year when we bought my 2000 Grand Am with 27,000 miles on it. So far the two items I needed fixed were not covered-- brake rotors (ok, that makes sense-- normal wear and tear, I guess) and my turn signal switch (I was surprised by that one-- long story short many 2000 Grand Am's were recalled for this issue, but not my VIN, so I had to pay).

I'm glad to find that they can be useful (phew). Now I just need to get over what I paid for it (teaches me not to research better)

Mine saved my butt b/c my head gaskets blew at 31,000 or so.
