Are adjoining rooms guaranteed?

I'm already thinking about a trip in a few years. (2016) Both of my big kids will be over 10 and my youngest will be over 3.

I like the AoA family suites, but 2 rooms at an All-Star will be cheaper, right?

Can I reserve them adjoining, or can I only request it and hope for the best?

We will be saving and planning for quite a while, and I am trying to figure out all the discounts and codes, but there's so much info it overwhelms me...

You can request it, but no, they are not guaranteed.

I believe that they are only guaranteed if you have unaccompanied minors in the other room.

ALL room requests are just that requests and are never guaranteed, even if a CM tells you they are. Some have even reported not having the resort they booked available (Very rare, but reported here)
And when you are ready to book, you want to request Connecting rooms, not adjoining. Connecting rooms have an interior door between 2 adjacent rooms. Adjoining rooms are next to each other, but you would have to leave one room, go outside, to enter the room next door.

If there are at least 2 adults, they would expect the adults to split up and 1 adult in each room with some of the minors.
If there is only 1 adult and enough young children to exceed the maximum occupancy of 1 room, you might be right. I stand corrected in this case.

There has been a poster who was the only adult with many kids and still didn't get connecting rooms.

If there is only 5 of you, you fit into one room at POR. That would be the cheapest option for a family of 5. Next up would be 2 non preferred rooms at the All Stars. The next cheapest is an All Star Family Suite. Then 2 preferred rooms at the All Stars.

POR is Port Orleans, right? Looking on the Disney website they all say "sleeps 4". I'm sure I'm missing something. Can the youngest sleep on a cot maybe? He'll be at least 4 when we go. The big kids will be at least 11 and 12. Also, they are boy and girl so I would imagine they'll want their own beds, but I don't think they'll put up too much of a fuss if we simply can't afford it.

Port Orleans Riverside, has a murphy type bed in the Alligator Bayou section so you can sleep five in that room.

If you mean is it just a room and not a suite, yes.

In Disney speak a standard room is their base level room. They then have various upgrades you can pay for. One of them is a preferred room location. You can book a preferred room if you wish to be closer to the food court. All of the preferred rooms at POR are in the Alligator Bayou section, which is where you will also find the rooms that hold 5 people. But there are both standard and preferred rooms in the Bayou section.
