Hi! Myself, DH, DD 13 & DD 16 will be joining this cruise. I'm having a hard time convincing myself and DH that it's O.K. to take my girls out of school for 18 days. Who else will have children missing school? I need some DIS advice :)

I would to see the shirt after it is watch several times. I bought a shirt from the Disney store and it looked great until it got washed. On packing I use a duffle bag and we split a regular suitcase. The Duffle is from LL bean and has lasted now over 11 years. It has been to Europe, Disney World, Alaska and too many cruises to count. Hubby has one too.. Plus they get priority in getting on the ship. Because they can't. Really be stacked very well.

Thanks to all of you who have posted feedback on getting info on having cruise hawaiian shirts made. I felt there was enough positive responses to ask Becky to proceed with mocking up fabric design art. Here is the message I sent. If you have any other questions you would like me to forward, let me know.

"Becky,

It was nice talking with you yesterday. I posted a message on the DISboards about the possibility of having Hawaiian shirts instead of the traditional tee-shirts for our April 2012 Hawaii cruise. http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2694096&page=181

I have gotten a pretty good response. I promised them I would report back once we receive the sample shirt you have generously offered to send, especially after I wash it.

I think the design will be a major factor, and of course the cost. Ordering tee-shirts from Vista Prints costs about half the cost of shirts but I think if you can show them the shirts are twice as nice, there will be interest.

The group has not decided on one design. I have attached some of those we are seeing being used. The first two seem to be the ones used most often. Maybe your artists can come up with a few recommendations.

I didn't ask about shirts in kids sizes. We do have some kids in the group so if possible, quotes for those sizes would be good. Also, do you have different shirts for men then women?

Thanks for everything."

Looks fab! I think any of those would probably make great pattern if they were scattered over the fabric!

Eric and Jason, are you going to be making any new Hawaiian themed waistcoats and bow ties?

Probably not :( If we found Disney themed hawaiian print fabric that had a satin sheen then I would....but I don't know that I'll find that...and I don't want to make just generic hawaiian fabric stuff. Never fear, though, we still have several ties that we have never worn including two new tie sets I'm working on right now using some Disney fabric that Hayley sent me from overseas! We also have several formal sets (bowties with either vests or cummerbunds) that nobody has ever seen yet either: Cars, another Little Mermaid set, Finding Nemo, and Fab 4 (goofy, mickey, pluto, donald). The only set we may recycle are the Golden Mickeys set because they were a big hit and because that show will (probably) still be on the ship, as well.

Well I got a bit of great news today. As some of you may already know, we have been planning this vacation all along but I haven't actually gotten approval from my boss to do it because after I've done so many long vacations recently (September 2010 Med/WBTA, May 2011 Repo/Alaska, etc.) my boss basically told me he didn't want me taking anymore vacations that were longer than 10 work days (2 weeks)....and, of course, because DCL decided to start the Hawaii cruise on a SUNDAY, rather than a Saturday...it ends on a Monday...which means it will require ELEVEN work days (ugh!!). So Jason and I have been scared to tell my boss in case he said no....we even have been preparing contingency plans that included seeing if DCL would let us disembark in Ensenada and then find our way home a day early from either Tijuana or San Diego if we had to!!

Well, I talked about it with my boss today and he said I can have the eleven days. WOO HOO!!!:woohoo: (I'm sure it didn't hurt that I mentioned that this would formally be our honeymoon probably....but still...it's a big load off not to have to worry about that!!)

This is great news!

I only use the flat ones for shirts. and pants. I don't use the other cubes. It seems too bulky. I returned all but the flat ones and have been using them for the last couple of years.

We use the flat ones for shirts also, never tried the cubes, but I do pack in the space bags things that don't wrinkle, or I don't care if it comes out wrinkled.

Welcome aboard. My kids will miss school, but they are a lot younger then yours. They are 1st and 2nd grade.

Lizzy will also miss school - she is in 1st grade and i think that sometimes it is ok for the kids to miss - this could possibly be a once in a life time thing, that will make memories and experiences she would never otherwise have.

I'm afraid of meeting my sons teachers for this year. He will just be in JK, but we will be at wdw for 12 days in October/November and then the cruise in April/May. I'm guessing I'm not going to be a popular mom!!!:rolleyes1

:welcome: aboard. Our cruise party consists of myself, Jon, and my DW, Candida. We'll be leaving our kids at home for this cruise. They are 13, 9, 3, and 1. But, then again we have never taken any of them to WDW or on any vacations. They are really a 13yr old cat, 9 yr old dog, 3yr old fish, and 1 yr old bird. Or as I like to call the family "The complete food chain":goodvibes Sorry can't give you any advice about missing school.

You might not be popular with the teachers but I am sure your sons classmates will consider you the best.

Love the idea of the Hawaiian shirts. My husbsnd is not really a tee shirt person so he would love a shirt. We would probably order two. Thank you so much for taking the time to look into this.

Welcome Lyrah. We're in the same predicament. I'm not too worried about the younger 3 kids ( they'll be in 2nd, 4th, and 6th class), but DD1 will be in year 10 (sophmore year I think you call it). I am going to have a chat with her year co-ordinator at the mother / daughter function at the end of this month to see if it's realistically feasible. If it's not, we'll probably cancel and look at a much longer holiday at the end of the year.

Good luck with your decision.

Cheers,
Sally :)

Is that 18 school days or 18 days total? I think if you talk to their teachers the first week school starts, tell them about the cruise and ask for their help in giving kids their assignments ahead they will be fine. Possibly they will give assignments to them really early so they can do them before you go or at least do them when we're at sea. Some classes may be covered by a report about their trip. I don't think it will hurt them to miss unless they are involved in some sort of special class etc. When I was a military brat and I missed 2-4 weeks consecutively every few years and survived just fine. In the long run the girls will need to decide if they feel it is "safe" to miss that long in their classes depending on how they are doing. But seriously talk to teachers asap when school starts, bet they are willing to work with you.

I wonder whether they would learn more about Pearl Harbor in their classroom or at the actual site. :) There are so many things they can learn first hand.

I was a high-school teacher for a while. We often had students take long "vacations" when their parents went to Asia/Pacific Islands to visit family. Schools expect families sometimes to take their children out for weeks, and have procedures documented for teachers to put together packages of studies. Your children should expect to spend several hours each day studying, and that often takes place in the youth activities areas with counselors observing. The cast may not have great experience working with literature, physical sciences or advanced math (or maybe they're brilliant at them!), but they can help keep your students on track and organize study teams.

Yes, be sure to talk with the counselors and teachers as soon as possible. Counselors can advise whether there are very important activities (such as SATs) that take place during your planned absence, and how to work around them. The sooner the teachers know, the better they can plan a useful study experience. And be sure to check back with them several times; we often got inundated with daily emergencies. Especially the teachers who have more than just one grade and subject to prepare.

The students may need to pack textbooks, a portable computer, etc., so take that into consideration when planning your luggage limits.

Does the DCL web site have any links regarding education support on board?

I just had an idea that I want to run by you all. Instead of a group tee shirt, how do you all feel about a group hawaiian shirt? I just spoke with a company that makes Hawaiian shirts and patterns to order. They can take a group logo, have an artist mock-up a fabric design for us, have fabric printed with our approved design and then manufacture shirts for us. The shirts would cost about what a tee-shirt purchased on-board cost, approximately $25 if we order 150 or more. They can make them as small as XS or as large as 4XL.

The company is called Custom Hawaiian Shirt Shop and Becky is going to send me a sample shirt so I can see the quality of their product. Once I get it I'll wash the shirt a few times and see how it fares. Then I'll let you all know. We'll post photos.

I want to e-mail her the different logos people have come up with and she will let us know what she thinks they will look like made up as fabric. They can be as many colors as we want and they can have any words printed with the pictures that we want. I think they might also have stock tropical patterns (hibiscus, vines, etc.) so we don't just look like walking billboards.

I don't want the company to go to a lot of work if there isn't any interest so I'd really appreciate honest input.

Val

Just keep us informed....popcorn::
we would two adults, 1=xl / 1=3xl

thx

Robin & Angel "D" :thumbsup2

I know my husband and myself would definitely be interested in ordering shirts. If you have more than one design, I know DH will buy them. He's been looking online and already bought 3 or 4 Mickey Hawaiian shirts for the cruise. Yes, count us in too. Great idea :thumbsup2
