I have 2 daughters, aged 8 and 12 and am looking for appropriate Halloween costumes. Both of them are kind of chubby so I am looking at costumes in small adult sizes. We went to the local party store and I was apalled at the choices. They had mostly R rated costumes (for example, "naughty nurse", sexy cop, skimpy pirate) you get the idea. What can I get them for costumes that aren't so "adult"? I really don't sew, so I need simple ideas that they would still think are cool.

I have an 8 yo so I have more idea's for her than I do your 12 yo. If your 8yo likes Hannah Montana maybe she could buy the wig, wear a sequin shirt and jeans? Maybe a cowgirl, indian princess, super hero, midevel princess, 50's girl, witch? They usually sell most of these in adult sizes as well. The 12 year old may just like dressing up and using color spray and glitter in her hair? Sorry, I'm not much help there...but I remember that's what we did when we were around that age group.

Hope you find something they like! :)

DD was a witch last year because all the teen costumes were a little snug and the adult ones were too..adult. We went with the basic black dress and got lots of accessories to jazz it up.

Try googling "no sew costumes"...there is a ton of stuff out there!

My DD9 wears a 14 1/2 (she is almost 5' tall already!) and we were able to find some pre-teen costumes at Walmart. They were meant for a taller girl, but they are just above the knee for her and the perfect lenght! I wish I had bought one of everything she liked, but I didn't. :sad2: I agree that lots of the store bought costumes are too sexy for pre-teens/teens.

Do the girls have a favorite character or have any idea of what they would like to be? Even if you do not sew, walking around the fabric store might give you some good ideas!

We were thinking about letting my DD be a nurse or dr this Halloween. Buy a set of scrubs, a stethscope and make a orintable name tag. Even if you don't sew, it's easy to buy hemming tape, and just cut the pants to lentght and iron on the hemming tape. You could do a cowgirl, a witch, a rock star (short skirt, fishnets, boots, tank w/a ripped up t shirt and colored hair spray), a farmer (overalls, flannel shirt, John Deere cap) a Mom (jeans, a "spitup" stainrd tshirt, frazzeled hair, with a burp cloth and baby conveniently attached to the shoulder, a diaper bag) a hippie (search out the consignment store or thrift store for bellbottoms, headband, peasant shirt). Those are just a few I can think of.

We were having the same issue with my 8 year old. She's also 5 foot, waers adult clothes, and everything was too adult. Well, last night we found my 4 yr old DD a bride costume with a veil. I suggested my 8 yr old be a bridesmaid, and she loved the idea! So we are going to find the most outrageous bridesmaids dress we can at the consignment store, a pait of dyeable shoes and voila a bridesmaid she will be.
