AP room discount at CR for Dec 2013?

I am planning a trip for Dec 2013 with my stay at the CR - Garden Wing in Deluxe Room. Would anyone know whether there would be an AP room discount for that room and that time period? I have never purchased an AP before and am not sure whether I would be going a second time. This trip would be either 5 or 6 nights. I read that some people got 40% off the room. So although it costs so much, the discount on the room would out weigh the cost of the AP. I am not sure whether it is worth it and maybe my calculations are off. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. If I get an AP, do I need to have it before asking for the room discount. How does it work? Thanks for any info you can provide.

At this point there is no way to tell if they will do AP discounts during that time period. Right now they are only out for some dates this Fall. We have an AP rate for a stay in a couple of weeks and the discount was about 35%. You don't have to have the pass when you check in, but you do need to show it to them by the next day. The reservations office will tell you that you need to have it when you check in, but I've read many times that you're ok if you show it to them by the next day.

If you're only going to be going for 5-6 days and you're not sure you're coming back, I don't know that a room discount (which may not manifest) will be big enough to off-set the additional cost of the AP.

We bought an AP last year because: we were going for two days before our cruise, we were going for 10 days in July (and we went early for DH's conference so we were really there for over two weeks) and we went again in November. They paid for themselves for us just in tickets. Granted the room discounts were nice, but it's only worth it if you're going to get your money's worth in regards to the tickets.

Thank you for the info. I am going to try and change my package reservation to a room-only for now. I hope I can get AAA discount added. I initially was told AAA could be added to room-only but when I actually decided to add it last night I was told that it couldn't be added. I am not sure if I trust the CM I spoke to because he didn't even know there was a deluxe room in the Garden Wing of the CR. He was arguing with me and I already have the room category on my reservation. I am hoping he didn't know what he was doing and to that the first person I spoke to was wrong. I am looking forward to any discount. The room is costing more than I anticipated paying. I figured the extra $250 to get an AP from the 6 day park hopper would be worth it to get at least a 35% room discount at a deluxe hotel. If I was staying at moderate or value resort, it would not be worth it.

Regarding an AP, when you make a reservation would they ask you for the number or would you even need to have an active AP? If a discount is available for an AP holder, I would not get it until I arrive. Is there anyway to purchase it before hand? I read that you can purchase it from the Disney store. Is this still true? Would it be active or can I activate it when I arrive?

You don't need the AP to book. You shouldn't have trouble buying after check in returning to the desk to show it to them.

Thanks. I am assuming I would need to check periodically with a CM to see if there is an AP discount on a room and what the percentage discount is. I really hope one does come out. Well even better would be a general public discount so I don't need to buy an AP.

More in the few months range - never a year out that I have ever seen.

Right now discounts are available 8/17/12 to 9/29/12. They came out on 7/12/12. So not alot of advance notice.
