AP rates

When AP rates are available on Disney hotels, do you have to have an AP for the parks, or can you have a waterparks AP or a Pleasure Island AP and still get the rates?

I know this seems like a stupid question, but it it's possible, it would sure be a great way to save money on hotels!!

It has to be a theme park annual pass.
