AP Purchase/Daily Tickets and Park Reservation

Ok I need some info/opinions. We feel like we are stuck in the middle on how to plan our upcoming WDW trips. First, we have trips planned in January and May of 2021. The original hope was to buy APs and save some money (which was a significant factor in planning the May trip). Am I correct that APs are still unavailable/ do you think we will be able to purchase them? Second, the parks are a big reason we go to Disney. If we can only do the resorts we would probably prefer to wait and go another time. How would handle this situation? Would you buy the tickets now and hope for an upgrade or wait and see what happens as we get closer? In a nutshell, we don’t want to go on both trips if we can’t do APs, but don’t want to be left out on park reservations. Hope this makes sense and TIA for any thoughts you can offer.

I'd book a package for January and then a room only for May, and upgrade the tickets in January to AP. Right now there's just too much up in the air for me to feel comfortable doing anything other than that.

That’s great advice! One quick caveat I didn’t mention is that I already booked a DVC rental for our January trip (I booked this in February before COVID). The room only for May is all set though!

Keep an eye on the parks availability calendar, if some parks start "selling out" for resort reservations, then I'd buy the standalone tickets for January.
