AP holder buying tickets question

I have some friends going to Universal in January. I already have plans to go to Universal in Oct. and beginning of Dec., but I'm not sure if I'm going in January with my friends. If I buy the tix for them ahead of time, in Oct. or Dec. for my friends coming in January, will the tix be activated when I buy them or when they're scanned at the turnstiles (in January). I just want to make sure.

Also, are the online ticket prices (from Universal's site) the same as the gate prices? Thanks!

The tickets won't be activated until they are scanned at the gate. The website shows the current gate prices. You would take the AP discount off the price listed.
