It's been a long time since I've done this, and I'm not sure it's still possible...

Can you book a room with an AP discount without having an AP? We're coming from Canada, and of course would by an AP (likely for all members of our party) on arrival, before checking in.

As stated, we've definitely done this in the past, but it was a while ago. Is it still possible, or do you need to have your AP before you book an AP rate?

My understanding is that you can. I'm keeping this option open if no discounts become available for late November to early December.

From what I read you can book at the AP rate but that when you check in you have to actually have your AP in hand, which meand you need to go to one of the park ticketing booths/offices to purchase one or exchange your voucher. I believe that only one guest have the AP, the entire party in the room need not have one.

I think I have most of it right based on what I've read, but I'll be happy to see what other say as I think this may be a likely option for us on our next visit.

we did this last year before we renewed our APs (wanted to get on the monthly plan and it was giving me trouble online). The other poster is correct in that you should get at least 1 AP prior to checking in. When booking on the phone they don't ask for your AP number so its a matter of verifying at check-in. I've done AP discounts tons of times and its hit-or-miss with the CMs asking to see your AP (whether I booked online or over the phone). Just having it in-hand prior to check-in will ensure you won't get stuck in an akward situation if a CM decides to do his/her job and actually verify.

I intend to have one by checkin, but won't when I book (before, we bought them at DtD on the way to the hotel)... sounds like I just need to call to book, and I'm all set?

Yes you can, I did it in December. I let mine AP go out in the end of July and brought a new one just before I checked in to Disney Fort Wilderness cabins. I had AP rate for my room.

We did this during our trip this past February. We called to book the room with the AP rate in advance and bought the passes at the front desk when we checked in. :goodvibes
