Anyway to salvage this picture?

We are throwing my Mom a suprise 50th birthday party and I really wanted to use this picture for the cake but as you can see its in pretty bad shape. Anyway we can fix it a little?

Adobe PhotoShop Elements 6 is one program that will help. There are others.

Open the image in your favorite editor

correct the color or desaturate

repeatedly duplicate the layer to build up contrast and depth

once there are enough layers, touch up the spots and lines with the rubber stamp or healing brush

it should clean up pretty well

I tried it. Let me know if this is somewhat like what you envisioned it to be. It is hard because you don't want to kill the nice subtle shadows, etc.

No problem! Don't run off to the bakery just yet though as I am sure that someone on here could probably take what I did and improve upon it even more. I still don't like the look of the face so much. It is a little plain looking. Better than it was, but there is something missing. I wish I knew how to make the shadows better. If noone does better with this, I hope it turns out great!

Ok, now taking the original pic through noiseware and swapping the head from that onto the body from my original, I end up with this version:

Oh yeah, I forgot, set the layer blending mode to "multiply".

Those look pretty good, especialy for a cake.

I did this one for an employee of mine. It started as a 1"x1.5" with ballpoint writing on the back.

This one can be printed 8x10:

From one little scrap of photo paper, the only picture of their great grandfather. Isn't photoshop great? Now every family member has his picture in their house.
