Hello. My DH and I are currently seriously considering a relocation to Florida. We are looking at the Orlando area because he is a cook and I am in the hotel business and Orlando is a giant tourist destination with hopefully a lot of job options. I have heard some say Orlando isn't the best, but I have to believe there are good and bad spots just like other cities. I am just looking for some help/advice on Orlando and other areas of Florida that are good to live on a modest income. I am not a big fan of the coastal cities due to fear of hurricanes, but that could change. TIA!!!!

I mostly lurk but we seriously considered a move to Orlando two years ago. We were very serious to the point where my husband had a second interview offer, we were house hunting, looking at schools.

We decided against it. It was absolutely NOT the place for us. A previous poster mentioned City Data and those forums are right on. I won't go into why it didn't work for us because everybody has different needs and wants. For us, we're content to make Orlando our vacation destination but it's not where we wanted our daughter to grow up.

We do live in Florida. We live in a small town on the Panhandle, within a few minutes of the tourist areas. We love it. We had been here for eight years when we considered the move. It was a good "reality" check and reminded us of why we love it here so much.

Please be aware that the job situation in Orlando is really bad at this time. There are job fairs on a regular basis. I saw one yesterday. There was a line of probably 500 people waiting to get in for less than 50 positions. That was for a hotel.

I don't think there are jobs any where right now. We are just in the beginning of the planning stages, so hopefully by the time we actually move the employment situation will have improved. Thanks for the link.
Disneymom2one, can I ask where you live? Or the area?
We need some names of cities/towns in Florida that are good places to live. I am starting from scratch here and any advice would be SO helpful.
Also, I am not ruling out of job with Disney, but at the same time I realize that Orlando is not Disney. Any help would be so wonderful!!

We live in the Panhandle in Okaloosa County. It's about midway between Panama City and Pensacola. It is NOT at all close to WDW. We can be there in about seven hours - 400 miles.

My area has three major work areas - military, tourism, and education. We're home to Eglin Air Force Base, Duke Field, and Hurlburt Field. It's a huge part of our life here with many retired military as well. We also have a large tourist economy because of our beaches. Our tourist season runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day and things get pretty hectic - especially in Destin and the surrounding areas. On the other hand, once the tourists leave, the great things to do are still here. We have incredible restaurants that have great specials this time of year. We also get a smaller snowbird and spring break crowd but this is primarily a family/kid destination. The last is education as we're home to Northwest Florida State which is a hybrid 2 year/4 year school.

The schools are great here. My daughter attends a charter that is every bit as good as many private schools we looked at in Orlando. The county overall generally places in the top 3 in the state on the FCAT (our state testing). You can place as much or as little stake in that as you want. Most of our schools are "A" schools.

Crime is minimal and rare although we've had our share of scandals recently. The weather is incredibly hot until about mid-October when we get a semi-fall. My daughter will wear at most a light jacket in the winter.

Hurricanes are awful and not fun. You learn to prepare and not worry. Traffic is fine except around the schools and military bases.

The big minuses are that it's primarily small town living. We'll never have IKEA, Whole Foods, etc. The cost of living is also somewhat high. We do fine. My husband is a full time professor and I teach about 1/2 time. We also bought our house when the market was much lower. People who work minimum wage jobs struggle here - big time.

We love it and wouldn't live anywhere else.

Thank you SO much! You make it sound wonderful! I am defiantly going to look into this area. The college is nice for me because I am a back to college student and have about a year and a half left on my bachelor's degree and would love to go on and get my masters degree. Thank you so very much for the great information! It is more appreciated then you could know.

Since your husband is a cook and you are in the hotel business, Orlando would definitely be a good fit once the economy turns around. They are constantly building new luxury hotels in the area.

I moved to the Orlando area five years ago. I knew nothing about the area other than what I had seen during my trips to WDW and Universal. I started by getting a map and locating the various cities. I then, did a lot of research. I knew I wanted to be fairly close to WDW, but I wanted a new home and a safe area. The areas I considered were parts of Ocoee, Winter Garden, Gotha, Dr Phillips and Windermere. I eventually chose Windermere.

We made a trip to the area and had a real estate agent take us around to look at various neighborhoods. It really helped. We found the one we are now living in.

The thing I like about my area is that it is close to WDW, but does not feel like a tourist area. I can be on WDW property in five minutes, but I never see tourists around my neighborhood or the nearby shopping areas. It is a very quiet area. Homes in the Windermere area range from the 200s to several million dollars. Many celebrities live in this area. The crime in Windermere is pretty low, although we recently had a guy shoot and kill his wife in Isleworth. Isleworth is the most prestigious neighborhood in the Orlando area. Those things can happen anywhere. Since it is a relatively new area, there is still alot of building going on. A new Walgreens just opened about five blocks from my home and other stores are slowly creeping into the area. I am lucky in that everything I need is close enough to me that I rarely need to get on a highway. About the only time I need to take a highway is to get to the airport. Staying away from I-4 is a good thing.

Parts of Winter Garden and Ocoee are very nice...other parts, not so much. If you stay south of Highway 50 and west of McGuire, the areas are nice. The new Winter Garden Village mall is very nice and convienent for my area as well as Winter Garden, Ocoee and Gotha.

Gotha is a very neat little town. It is very little, but nice. The homes there are expensive.

Dr. Phillips is also very nice and more convenient to places like the Mall of Millenia. I ended up not choosing that area because there was no new construction. It is a well established area with nice neighborhoods. It is about a 15 minute drive from Dr. Phillips to WDW property.

I don't know a lot about elementary and middle schools in this area. My daughter was in high school when we moved here, so I've never paid close attention to the schools. She attended West Orange High School in Winter Garden. Since she attended, they have built a beautiful new high school. The only problem I've seen with the schools here is that they are terribly over crowded. The student to teacher ratio tends to be high. The high schools are huge.

I very quickly ruled out the areas south of WDW like Kissimmee and Celebration. Those areas are very much tourist areas. They were way to commercial for my taste. I felt Celebration was over priced for what you got. My home is actually closer to WDW than Celebration and just as nice and I paid less than what I would have had to pay to live in Celebration. Then again, they do have some nice little events that take place in downtown Celebration, if that is the type of thing you are interested in. Of course, anyone can attend those events whether you live in Celebration or not.

I do like the Winter Park area. It is older and quaint. Some parts look very run down, but much of it is very nice. It is an expensive area. On the plus side, Rollins College is there. It is a private college. Very nice, but the tuition is high. The Park Avenue area has a lot of quaint shops and it tends to be an area devoted to the arts. My biggest problem with Winter Park is the need to take I-4 to get to WDW or many other places in the Orlando area.

I've only been to Winter Springs once. They hold the annual Scottish Festival there. It seemed very nice, but a long drive to WDW.

I've been to Oveido a couple of times, but don't really know it well enough to comment. The area near the airport and UCF do not appeal to me at all.

Clermont is a nice area. It is the only area of Orlando where you will find hills! It has a lot of new construction and new stores in the area. It is an expanding area. It is about a 20 minute drive from WDW property.

Don't let the people on that other forum scare you with the talk of crime in Orlando. Yes, there is crime. I don't know of any large city without it. You just have to know the areas to avoid. Don't go to Pine Hills (aka Crime Hills). The vast majority of crime in Orlando happens in just a few areas. OF course, you'll here of break ins and petty crimes everywhere. Again, it happens in all cities. I never feel unsafe in my area. I take my dog for a walk every night after dark and I never worry. Orlando is not an unsafe city as long as you use your head.
If you have any specific questions about the area, I'd be happy to help as much as I can.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the help! This is exactly what I was looking for. I really appreciate the info on the better areas around Orlando. Now I have a place to start from. Unfortunately, we will have to rent a place at first. So hopefully we will be able to find some nice rental properties in the areas you talked about. We are from Saint Paul MN, which is a has a bit larger population than Orlando, so I understand that crime happens everywhere. I can't thank you enough for the info. Can I ask, being so close to WDW, have you lost any of the magic of the world? Do you still go there often?

I won't kid you and tell you that your feelings for WDW won't change. They will. I go to DTD a lot. I only go to the parks a couple of times a month unless there is something special going on.

While you won't get that same thrill going to the parks when you live here that you got on vacation, there are some definite advantages to living so close. I no longer stress about not getting to do certain things on any particular trip to a park because it is very easy for me to go back and do it another time.

I often go to the parks and not even ride a ride. I go to walk around or have something to eat.

If it is crowded or too hot, I go home. Not a problem.

Your feelings toward WDW will change, but it will still be special.

I don't have any advice about FL since I live in CT ;) but my DH is a realtor and he always suggests to people moving to a new area to rent for a year or so, get a "feel" for the area, drive around, get to know the neighborhoods and towns in an area and THEN make a decision about where you want to buy.
