Anyone watching NBC right now? Great WWII story in Italy

Yep, I saw it.... Great story. The guy had a lot of grace about him.

What a wonderful story about Vernon Baker! It's an eye-opener to see how Black soldiers were treated. He has a terrific attitude.
These are the kinds of stories that I wish there had been more of from NBC.

I think this gentleman's story is heroic and amazing. I told my DS when it came on don't change the chanel because I had been wanting to see it. He watched it with me and said that it just blows his mind how cruel people used to be. We were very disapointed with NBC's coverage because there were so few background stories about the athletes as had been in past olympics but when I saw this story I thought they did a real good thing. :thumbsup2

I agree...what an amazing story! Earlier in the day yesterday I caught an episode of Olympic Ice on the USA network. The last hour of the program was basically a documentary on an Italian bobsledder from the '50's and 60's, Eugenio Monti who basically changed the sport of bobsledding by helping his competitors and making changes to the sleds. It was a fascinating story. In the 1964 Olympics he actually gave a bolt that holds the runners on to his competitors from Britan.....and they ended up beating him for the gold. He formed lasting friendships with his competitors and it was amazing to see how...almost 40 years later.....these men still got teary eyed just talking about him.

Vernon Baker, a TRUE American hero! :thumbsup2

What an amazing story. For me, the floodgates poured open big time when they showed him meeting that man who was the teenaged Resistance fighter shot just under his nose while he was with Baker's regimen.

The sight of those two now-elderly men recognizing each other and then joyfully hugging each other was very, very moving.

To read more about this amazing man, who, much belated received the Congressional Medal of Freedom from President Clinton, read here:
