DH and I plan to go to the Wine and Dine 5K. We are not runners, usually only run 2 miles on the treadmill at the gym. But I have completed 2 5ks at Disney and loved it so much he agreed to do the next one with me

I was watching the youtube video of last year's W&D half and noticed that a lot of people walked or slow jogged. I know we could do it, but I am worried about the time of the race. If it begins at 10:00, am I going to enter Epcot at 12:30 or 1 in the morning if I walk/jog it? That sounds crazy.

There are a lot of us here who walk and run/walk our Disney half marathons and marathons. The minimum pace for the half marathon is a 16-minute mile, which has you finish in about 3.5 hours. Yes, that would mean a 1:30 AM finish for the Wine & Dine. I did it last year and had a great time despite the late hour. I took an afternoon nap and was good to go!

Yes, I walked the WnD half with my DD, and we didn't finish until about 1:45AM. There were still a lot of people finishing after us. I usually turn into a pumpkin around 10PM, but I actually liked the late night start.

I just decided today to do the Wine and Dine and I'm in your same shoes...I'm not a runner, but it sounds like a good goal and good experience...and I'm glad to get ready with fellow DISers!!

While not at Disney, I've walked my first half marathon in 3 hours 28 minutes. For my second one, I used a run/walk combination and finished in 3:07. For that I would run 1 minute then walk 2 minutes. I've never run 2 miles straight in my life. I used John Binham/Jenny Hadfield "Marathoning for Mortals". Jeff Galloway who is the training consultant for run Disney also advocates this kind of run/walk/run method. Assuming your goal is just to finish, your 2 miles of running is giving you a great start to finishing a half marathon. If you put the time in and build your miles slowly.

Good luck.

I have walked/jogged each race I have done so far. Is very doable and I've never even been close to getting swept. YOU CAN DO IT!!

Aww thanks for the encouragement!

I think it would be a fun summer goal for Dh and I to do together. He just lost 30 lbs and is feeling great. And I kind of like the night run better than getting up and out by 6am. Plus if it is like last year, the MNSSHP ticket will be of no help since we will fly home on Sunday afternoon.

I really like the run for set minutes then walk for set minutes idea. I just figured we would run until we felt like dying then walk the rest..:rotfl2: not really a good plan.

The W&D was the first 1/2M for DW and myself and a great one at that. Because DW was not sure if she could walk an entire half, we did the Relay. To date we have also walked the Space Coast 1/2M, this year's 5K and Donald, I also walked Mickey for my first marathon and a Goofy and a 5K last weekend for Make A Wish.

When we started training 1 year ago, DW was at a 20mm pace and now she is 16mm and under. By the time the DL 1/2M comes around in Sept. I expect her to be in the 14:30mm to 15mm pace range with no jogging or running.

Train smart while having fun since the W&D will be much better this year.

Good luck.:thumbsup2:thumbsup2
