My parents watched my dog last time we went to Orlando. They said dog was great. Loved having her. etc... We had even talked about this trip when we stopped to see them and dropped the dog. (They are near Tallahassee at the moment. Last time they were in Destin.) Everything seemed fine. Well, i was talking to Mom today and was talking about trying to find a place to board our new dog while we were gone. (New dog is too big and too much for my parents to handle. She's sweet, but she thinks she's puppy size and would just be too much for them. I'd never ask them to watch her. Older dog is quiet and small. VERY easy going.) She asked what I was going to do about the older dog while I was in florida. I said that I was hoping they'd watch her again. (I was really confused...we'd already talked about it. :confused3 ) She says "Ugh...<the disgusted *ugh* not the confused one>...I don't know...that's a lot of trouble" WHAT?!? OK...my parents *live* a mile from me. They are gone 11 months out of the year. I check their mail. Ship them any important things they may need. (And pay for it myself. Never asked to be paid. The one time she tried I told her not to worry about it.) Keep an eye on their house. (Although not so much this last one since they have someone who lives on their land in exchange for this and mowing.. But I'm still there if anything needs to be handled and I know they'd ask if they needed it.....and I'd gladly do it if I could!) I've done this for the last 3 years. But keeping my lethargic middle aged corgi might be too much trouble! She is my mother and I love her, but she makes me want to scream.

Sorry. I needed to vent. If you read that much, thanks. As a rule, I don't vent about my parents to DH. I will have let this go a long time before he will. ;)

SO.......anyone use the kennels at Universal? Any opinions there? I'm guessing it's just a concete pad with a fence? Is that right?

I think my hotel is pet friendly. (For extra $$$ I'm sure) And I'm not looking forward to packing a crate with me. But if I have to bring one with me I'm bringing both dogs. With the added kennel costs, I'll go ahead and buy the anual pass. Between it paying for the kennel for one dog and the free parking, the difference between the 2 tickets should be covered.

Off to go find my hotel info to make sure it's pet friendly.

If you're staying at Royal Pacific. I'm positive it is but I don't know the details. Last time we were there they're were quite a few people who were evacuted from their area due to a hurricane staying there with their dogs.

It is my understanding that all of the Universal resorts have pet friendly rooms. They even give you a goodie bag for your dog, a pager to contact you if there are any problems (barking, etc.) while you are away from your dog, and a whole list of activities and spa treatments for your dog if you want to pay for them to come take care of your special friend while you are away such as walks, ice cream (frosty paw) social and play time. I have not done this, as I almost always stay at DVC or HGVC, but I looked into it once and was given this info.

I have not used the Universal kennels, but I have used the Disney ones. They are way too small for a large dog. Trust me on this one. There is a kennel near downtown Orlando called the East Orlando Animal Hospital. The staff was lovely. They played with my puppy every day. I was able to drive there from WDW in about 20 minutes to feed him (wouldn't eat without us) and take him to a nearby forest preserve for a long walk. I would suggest this if your hotel is not pet friendly and you need to board.

Good luck.

All 3 of the Loews Hotels are pet friendly.
The following is on the Universal hotel website.

kennel boarding during the day

Guests can board their pets for the day (no overnight boarding) at the Studio Kennel.
Located in the parking structure, boarding costs $10.00 per pet per day and will close 2 hours after the last park closes.
There is a phone outside the kennel to contact security to assist in picking up a pet after the kennel has closed.

Guests must provide food and return periodically to walk their pet(s).
Upon arrival to the parking garage, ask the toll-plaza attendant for directions to the Studio Kennel.

Hope the above help you.

In the past, the pet rooms have been on the lower floors.

Keep in mind that Florida does not accept the 3 year rabies vaccination. I have been told by the kennel we used that only the annual vaccination is accepted. If you use the 3 year vaccination, make sure you check before you leave home. You wouldn't want to have an incident and get caught unawares. Nor would you want to give your puppies an extra shot they don't need.

thanks everyone. I'm staying offsite. My hotel charges $10/day per dog. Plus another $3/day fee. (:confused3 ) So $23/day for the hotel and $10 each/day at Universal. So $43/day total. I found a place here that will board in their home for $35/day total for both dogs. (It's a no cages set-up. They give the dogs the run of their house and yard. And they have an inground pool which they allow the dogs to use so the retriever will be in heaven.) I'm thinking of going with the local place and having inlaws check on them a few times while we are gone. THEIR hotel will actually cost more than ours for this vacation! :rotfl: (Just have to convince DH. Wish me luck there... )

ETA......I'm still ticked beyond belief at my mom though! LOL!

I think it is in each mom's contract to always do things for the kids no matter how old the kids get......

That's how it is here.............

I'm always pet sitting, and i love it...

I hope your children appreciate all you do. :lovestruc Maybe my mom's dyslexia kicked in when she read the contract. There's very few things that they can help me with at this point in our lives even if they wanted to. (I'm usually on the helping end...and that's OK. I'm almost always glad to be) I guess I'm a little shocked (and saddened) that when something finally arose where *I* needed something from them (That they can EASILY help with and would cost them NOTHING) that she acted that way.:confused3

We plan on going to Universal in July. I will be coming from vacationing on Panama City Beach. My dog always goes with me to our condo. I could leave her at home but two weeks in a kennel is too much for a 10 year old Yorkie who has never been away from us for longer than a week. Also she has to have two insulin injections a day for diabetes. I have found Preppy Pet studios that is about 9 miles from Universal. The rates are great!

Suites include full day and night stay with up to 5 outdoor walks, TV in suite areas, feeding your provided foods and treats, per pet, per night with additional pets sharing suites 1/2 off
