I am getting a Canon 40D in May...Maybe sooner if I get a decent tax return...Well, I have seen that doing Infrared with the 40D is hard and I was considering getting a used S3IS, Digital Rebel, Canon 10D or a Canon G5 or G6 or G7 and having it converted to IR...

I wonder if I would get god quality out of a point and shoot or if it has to be a DSLR to get amazing shots.

Has anyone here done this?

I was looking at getting the filters but I don't like the idea of carrying a tripod all over France...and there is some post processing to worry about.

When you download pics from a IR camera, are they ready to go or is there some post processing to do?

I have been fascinated by some IR shots from a DISmember and ever since, I have had the BUG...

Any thoughts?

I really think I am leaning to a modified camera.

I have seen a few on Ebay...I wonder if I can find a good deal on a 10D or Digital Rebel and get it converted.

Lifepixels converted my D60 and I was very happy about it. If you use them, follow the link on this page - I earn brownie points whenever someone goes from my site to theirs :) :

I know many people that get their decent p&S converted and have good results. Look on the site for examples and their recommendations for the better camera to use.

Any examples to share? D60...is this a Nikon? Sorry but I'm a Canon girl and I am not sure what a D60 is...

Nope, Canon D60 - one of the originals. Was replaced so quickly by the 30D (20D?) that many never knew it existed. Really a great camera though. As for examples, here are two:

Require some PS work (channel mixing) to get the false color IR look. B&W IR is a bit easier (though still needs PS - all of your images will come out looking pink/red/magenta with the IR conversion)

Awesome work...I really like the first one. I am considering getting a Canon S3 IS converted or a Rebel or Canon 10D body...I am so unsure. I would prefer the S3 because it's so compact but if I am going to have this done, quality is important. It's expensive to not do it right.

You'll get better results with a dSLR, especially if you want to do anything other than B&W. They now offer an enhanced filter that gives more color and is what they recommend for a p&s. Good luck. It is fun to be able to do it without filters and a tripod.
