My DS plays hockey and a woman whose son plays with him told me her nephew is Autistic and he went to Dr. Boris and is now doing really well. Anyone else know anything??? Dr. Boris is in Plainview NY I think. (Long Island)

I haven't heard of him but I'll ask around in my circle.

Please please please do your research on any diet. I would take "data" on behavior prior to starting a diet so you have something to compare to after your child has been on a diet for a period of time- something "scientific" so your family can make an educated decision.

I have met several families who tear their hair out every day because their child is on a special diet and it restricts choices where food options are already restricted due to sensory issues/taste preferences/routine... It becomes a power struggle and a nutrition concern.

I work in a school for 100+ students with low-functioning autism, if their behavior was going to improve with a change in diet, we would be jumping on that one. I have heard anecdotal evidence saying that diets work, I have never experienced it professionally except in the case of a true (tested) allergy.

I know that others feel differently and I respect that. I just am throwing my caution out there. And yes, I will ask around about Dr. Boris. :goodvibes

I wonder how many of these special-diet cases were really kids with Celiacs, not Autism, as Celiacs can have similar symptoms to Autism.

Thank you so much I really appreciate it. I'm trying to find out him and do my research.

Note that the tests for celiac are not 100%. My daughter and I both test negative for celiac. We are both gluten intollerant.

My daughter is an example of a child with autism who tests negative for celiac yet responds well to the GFCF diet. That being said, I do not recommend it to all parents of autistic kids. My DD had clear GI problems and we already knew of one food allergy when she was diagnosed as being on the spectrum. She really does fit the classic profile of a child for whom the diet will work. We treat her GI problems and as these improve her ability to cope with her issues associated with her autism also improve.

My big caution would be that if any doctor tries to tell you that "abc works for all ASD kids" then run. There are no one size fits all answers. A good doctor will look at the child as an individual with individual needs and will investigate that child's health, any deficiencies, any abnormalities, etc before suggesting any of these "alternative" treatments. They can be helpful but only when the right ones are used for the individual child.

.

what is the profile for success with the diet???

She has GI problems and she was self limitting in her diet to items that were high gluten and milk foods. These are extremely common in kids who end up seeing benefit from the diet. The self limitting makes it very scary to try but it's remarkable just how much the diet broadens once you get gluten and milk out of the diet.

There are other kids who have benefitted from GFCF but my personal experience is that any parent I know who has seen benefit has a child with one or the other or both of the above issues (GI problems or self limitting diet).
