Anyone tipped the front desk for upgrade?

Has anyone ever tipped the check in desk person in order to get an upgrade at the Dolphin?

Hi...

Tipping is something done after the fact (ie) waitress, valet parking, bellman...

Bribing is what you are describing here LOL... it is an ackward situation... slipping them a 50.00 and asking for an upgrade...

The front desk Cm's are not in a "tipped" position.. they may get in trouble for accepting payment.

Maybe in Vegas.. but not at Disney

I can't imagine trying to do that at WDW and I would imagine that the CMs could not accept a bribe anyway.

If you really want an upgrade then it is best to book what you want instead of worrying about trying to bribe the CMs.

They won't accept it, unless they wish to loose thier job and most likely will be highly offended.

Before you jump all over the OP. This is actually a common practice in some cities especially Las Vegas. Since it is not common in Orlando who knows if the clerk would even realize what you were doing.

While it's possible that someone could LOSE thier job, no need to jump all over them for asking.

You could try asking at checking without the monetary gift, it could happen! Good luck!

I've never bribed a front desk CM before. And if their rules are anything like the Disney Store rules circa 2001, they are not allowed to accept gifts or any kind.

That said, it never hurts to just ask nicely. When we were checking into the Contemporary for our honeymoon (on a CM rate for a wing) I jokingly said to the check-in CM "Wouldn't it be nice if I could wake up and see the castle! But I bet people ask for upgrades all the time." She said lots of people asked, then excused herself. When she came back out and gave me our keys, she winked and said "lots of people ask, but for most it's not such a special occassion." She got us the upgrade -- 12th floor facing the castle. I woke up the next morning and could see the castle while still lying in bed. Awesome! It was January, so the place was pretty empty.

We new she shouldn't accept a gift, so we left a note for the manager that she went above and beyond.

The other posters are absolutely correct on this one. As a former cast memeber, any non-tipped position is not allowed to accept tips and if caught could lose their job over it. Especially if it was $50 like someone suggested!! The best advice is if you don't want to pay for an upgrade, be extremely sweet to the cast member working with you. (but don't be fake) and they will do what they can to please you.

Nobody's jumping on anybody. It's a bribe. But just because it's a bribe doesn't make it automatically illegal or unethical.

But FWIW, I've been upgraded at the Dolphin without having to bribe anyone. All I said, truthfully, as that I'd been at the Dolphin before on business and like it and had brought my family back with me and it was their first time at the hotel. I added nicely, "Anything you could do to make the stay a special one for them would be greatly appreciated." My wife and kids were standing just out of earshot at the time. We were upgraded to a balcony room that overlooked MGM.

The Dolphin isn't a Disney hotel. They are owned by Sheraton.

A good way to get upgraded there would be to join their "preferred guest" program. If there are rooms available, you should get a 1 category upgrade.

This was just a question. I wasn't by any means suggesting it or even saying I was going to do this. This subject came up on another board from a person who said they worked at a large resort in Florida. This person was talking about her experiences and different ways people get upgrades.

No one has accused you of wanting to do it... They were responding to your query and mentioning why it probably wouldn't work and why.

If I asked "Has anyone ever tried to walk out of Best Buy with a Disney DVD without paying for it?" I wouldn't view someone pointing out that one might be arrested if someone tried that as jumping on me. That's a genuine possibility. Just as the hotel desk clerk may to prohibited from accepting, or be privately offended by, the "quid pro quo" bribe.

It is always so interesting to see what everyone's opinion is on things. That is what makes life and these forums interesting.

I did not see anyone jumping on anyone, until some started "jumping on" some for their comments to the orginial question.

Funny how things can appear so different to people.

I'm not sure on Housekeeping, they may be a higher paid tipped position. The thing with them, you're not usually in the room when they receive the money and when you're gone for the week, they can't exactly refuse.
I used to deliver groceries from the merchandise stores to the villas at the BW. The guests usually would try to tip us for the service we provided, but we were not allowed to accept.
