My doctor wants me to take Tricor for high triglycerides. Was wondering if any of you take or have taken it and how do/did you like it?

I've looked on WebMD but know that my fellow DISers could tell me about it too.

I've heard that it's expensive. How much have you had to pay for it?

Just started taking it and my wife picked it up so I don't know the cost. It and several other things were $91 total so I think it was around $45 with insurance for a months worth.

Noticed you live in Rockwall, we have good friends that live there on Lakeshore Drive and usually go see them every couple of months.

I've been on Tricor for about 3 or 4 years now, due to genetic high triglycerides (thanks, Mom, lol). I've had no side effects that I know of, and I've gotten in the rhythm of taking them every day with lunch.

I just got a prescription filled through my mail order insurance service and a 3-month supply cost $80 (I know it's usually cheaper if you can buy it through the mail order, 'cause they give you some sort of discount...bulk, maybe?). I just recently switched insurance carriers and I want to say that the old mail order company charged me like $89 for a 3-month supply; I specifically remember thinking that it was a dollar a day. Not sure if that's considered expensive or not.

Good luck!

I have been on Tricor since 2003 - it has really helped my triglyceride number come down and I have not experienced any side effects.

The cost is going to depend on your insurance carrier, as I'm sure you know, they usually have different tiers of copays for RXs - for me Tricor "costs" my highest copay of $40 for a monthly supply (I chose not to do mail order - I like being able to go the pharmacy). CVS receipt says insurance covers $73.35 and I pay $40 - so that would mean $113.35 is actual cost for 30 pills - which is roughly 3.77 per pill.

IMHO that is costly but a small price to pay to not have a heart attack...and if you have insurance you only pay a portion of the actual cost.

Talk to your doctor about your concerns - but for me, it has helped.

I'm another one who's on Tricor for high triglycerides. I've been taking it for several months now. I believe, with my insurance, my monthly refills are $30.

I've also not experinced any noticeable side effects, which is a good thing. The hard part is just remembering to take them!!:rolleyes1

Thanks for some positive reviews. That makes me feel better. The majority of them on WebMD are negative. The amount ya'll pay does not seem too high. Close to $100 is what I would think was expensive.

We live south of I30 and love it here. Once all the road construction is done, it will be great!

Purplegirl says that she takes hers at lunch. What time of the day do the rest of you take yours? I picked up my prescription today and it only cost me $30. That's definately manageable.

I take it as well. The only side effect I've had has been a good one--one of my other medicines upsets my stomach, but Tricor seems to counteract that. So, no more upset stomach!

I just take mine at bedtime with the rest of the pills. I've never been told I had to do anything fancy with it. I pay $60 for a 3 month supply through mail order.

Mail order. I'll have to look into that.

I took Tricor for about 4 months but had to go off it because it was causing some serious allergic reactions. I had two anaphylactic reactions about 4-5 months into it and didn't realize at first that it was the Tricor setting them off. Once I stopped the Tricor the severe reactions stopped.

I've been on Tricor for about 9 months and it's helped bring down my numbers quite a bit. I take mine in the morning but I was told it can be taken anytime of day. I have a really good mail order program through my insurance. I pay $25 for a 3 month supply. It's one of the more expensive drugs on the plan since I pay $10 for 3 months of other drugs.

I have taken Tricor for a few years now, no problems. I just hate paying for it is all. It seems to go up a couple of dollars every month. This month I paid $68 for a one month supply. All the rest of my medications are much, much less expensive, averaging $10 for a 3 month supply.

I am definitely going to look into mail order the next time I have my physical. Even when I call in my refills I still have to stand in line 15-20 minutes because there are so many ahead of me. It would be nice to just walk out to the mailbox and have them in there. And I like the idea of a 3-month supply for one copay too. My Mom gets all her medications through Medco, and I'm the one who calls in the refills for her, so I might as well be calling in my own as well. :)

If you feel weak/tired after taking it for a few days, be sure to contact your doctor and have a blood test. There is a rare allergy to this drug. I can not take it, it caused drug induced hepatitis. If you have this allergy, you will recover after the drug is discontinued. Drink plenty of water. You start feeling better the next day, but don't feel like yourself for about a week or so.

Thanks for the heads up. I've decided to take my dose in the morning for now. So if I do have any severe reactions, hopefully they will happen while I've awake.

My DH takes it and has for a number of years. I think it is $100 for 90 day supply with our insurance. He has had no side effects from it and takes it at dinner.

My DH had been taking Tricor and his doctor just switched him to a new med. He gets his labs done every 3 - 6 months and it showed that his liver tests were up. This new med is not supposed to effect his liver as much.
