I was thinking how much easier and roomier it would be for me to just pack my entire family into a trunk. Instead of 5 suitcases, just get a trunk.

Years ago, my brothers would come home from the navy with a footlocker...perfect trunk.

Of course, a modern day trunk would be on wheels....

If you are driving I don't see a problem, but with flying you would be sure to be over the baggage weight limit so you have to weigh the baggage fees between 5 suitcases versus one large trunk. Some airlines have a size restriction as well so it would probably be "oversized" and have other fees attached to it.

You also have to think of storing it in your cabin...will it be so big that it is in the way all the time....will it fit in the closet, a corner..certainly won't fit under the bed.

Just things to think about.

I suppose there are no rules saying you can't - but if travelling by air - the fees for overweight luggage may wind up being more than your fare.... I can't remember if DCL has weight restrictions in place.

One big trunk sure would make life easier though!

I wouldn't think it would be very practical. That's probably one reason why you don't see them used any more. It would be cumbersome and hard for anyone to lift (would likely take 2 people) and most airlines have not only a 50 Lb weight limit but size restrictions too. I wouldn't use it but there's a lot of stuff I wouldn't do that others would...:rolleyes1

I don't think there is a size or weight limit from the cruise line, but where will you store the trunk? It probably wouldn't fit under the bed and it would take away valuable floor space.

As long as the trunk has air holes, and you supply water and newspaper, I don't think this would be a problem. Better tip the porters well, though, as I imagine this could get quite heavy!

For our 11 Night Christmas Cruise, we took two large plastic totes in addition to our suitcases. Not quite a trunk, but they held more than an average suitcase. We drove, so no issues with weight limit, etc. We used them for Fish Extender gifts, some Christmas decorations and things that just did not fit in a suitcase. Checked them in with the Porters. Once unpacked on board, we stacked them inside each other, and put on the veranda, so they took up minimal room. I also stored snorkel and beach stuff in them while on the veranda. We sent one with our luggage on the last night, kept the other for all the miscellaneous stuff the last morning, and carried it out. It worked out very well.

This is an awesome idea!!! I love the "kept the other for all the miscellaneous stuff the last morning, and carried it out" as I always end up with tote bags, laundry bags, etc. full of last minute stuff that didn't make the suitcases...

I think in the "old days" before cruise ships when ships were used as transportation across the Atlantic, your clothes would be packed in a steamer trunk.

The lady's maid and the manservant would unpack the clothes and the ship's steward would store the steamer trunk in the ship luggage storage room.

I had to read this twice to make sure you weren't trying to sneak your whole family onboard for a cheap vacation! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
