My ex has asked to take our kids (11 and 9) to see Jeff Dunham. While the kids watch him on tv, those shows are edited. If you've seen him live, could you please let me know what the extent of his language is and if there are other kids there, or if the audience is mostly adults? I know what his humor is like and most of the stuff will go right over their heads. I'm really torn with this, as it's on the weekend that the kids are with me, so the ball is totally in my court. While I don't think it's appropriate for kids our age, I don't want to back myself against a wall when it comes time for me to ask for a weekend swap when I want to do something with the kids. Why couldn't he have asked to take them to something more age appropriate??? Oh I know, because this is something HE'S interested in.

I went with my family. my boys were 11 & 16 and we loved the show. He did not get too bad. We purchased his dvd's and I found that he was worse on them then live.

I went 2 summers ago and I was shocked at the amount of kids that were there. That being said while it was adult themed, it wasnt that bad. If the kids have seen his videos, I dont see the problem?

We took our kids (then 11 & 7) last year. He did not swear very much that I can recall. There were TONS of kids there. You can tell his people know that he appeals to kids, because the dolls sell like crazy and they were $$$$$.
It was fun. They'll like it.

Thanks for all the responses. You've alleviated my concerns. LOVE the Dis!

I saw him in June in Richmond. I don't recall seeing any young kids at the show we went to.

I think he's hilarious but I would be uncomfortable taking elementary school kids to a show (I do think there is a lot of profanity that is edited out of the TV shows).

I have seen him live. While I don't consider him "family comedy" I would take a teenager....but would not feel comfortable taking a kid under 12. He does get a little riske' but some of it they might not "get".

I have to agree. I've taken my kids to see him, but they were 16 & 18 the first time. I don't recall seeing any young children there, mostly mid-late teens and up.

We saw him a couple years ago, and I was surprised at how much more "adult" the humor was live than on tv. I would not take my 11 & 12 year olds to a live show, and didn't see very many kids there. Maybe he has simmered down a little in his live shows since we saw him.

He was somewhat more adult, but not horrible.

We saw him after he'd returned from a Europe tour where he didn't do Bubba since people don't Nascar over there.

He forgot the skit part way through and the audience did for him. It was what's on his videos verbatim.

Jeff was totally cracking up, he was like it's "Bubba 3:16".

He's coming back this Dec and we are going!

We went in 2002. Granted his act has changed somewhat since then, but I don't recall a ton of off color humor.

This is a "bit" OT but I was curious about anyone who has seen him lately in a larger venue (like an arena)...do you have to sit close to see him? Do they have a TV screen of some sort?

I can't imagine how good the acoustics can be to even hear him clearly from the "higher" up/semi-nosebleed section...he will be in our area (in an arena) in February and my 13 yr old dd loves him and has begged me to see him when he comes to town (she doesn't know he's coming yet), but I was concerned because the tix on the floor are just too much $$ for us, so I'm wondering how much you can really see and hear (clearly) from higher up areas in an arena? Thanks.:goodvibes

We saw him in an arena. Didn't have any trouble hearing him. They had a screen up.

I personally would not take anyone younger than 13 to the show as he does swear and some of the jokes/things he talks about tend to be more adult-oriented.

DH and I saw him before we were married. He is funny, I'll give you that (I love Peanut and Jalepeno on a Stick), but a lot of things he talks about is definately not appropriate for a child (IMO).

DS9 saw Jeff Dunham on Comedy Central last week (with me watching it with him) and even though he was laughing, some things were over his head. The last bit that was done was adult humor and all I have to say is that I am so glad he didn't understand it (think Pulp Fiction). All I need is for him to try and tell that one bit to someone and have that person say to me, "What are you having him watch ?"

Jeff Dunham does have a few DVD's that you can get and they do have an edited and unedited version to choose from when you play it (my brother owns two of Jeff's DVD's).

Based on what you saw, I'm guessing Jeff changed his routine and geared it towards kids. When we saw him it was at a comedy club, so definately no one under the age of 21.

The venues Jeff played that are available on DVD were much bigger (like a large theater type setting) and even then it was a lot of adult humor. Definately not appropriate for younger than maybe 13.

I went to see him with DH, DS, and DBiL, and we were shocked at the amount of kids who were there. None of us thought they should have been. The material at our show was not kid appropriate and this was at a major venue, not a club. I don't think I would take kids that age there. My oldest DS is 13, and I might take him now...

My husband and I saw him live at the fair last year where he debuted the puppet he used in Dinner for Schmucks. Loved the show. However, would not take our kids (9 & 11). There was a kid a few rows up, and I just cringed when he got into some... adult... stuff. His mom video taped the entire show... maybe she was bootlegging it and couldn't get a sitter? :confused3

My kids have seen probably the majority of his skits, but we skip over ones that are inappropriate (sex). Even if they don't "get it", last thing I need is for them to try to repeat it to someone. We even have the talking Walter doll (my husband's, not my kids').

IMO, this is more of an "Age Appropriate Outing" situation rather than an "Even Steven, You Switch For Me, I'll Switch For You" situation.

I don't think it was geared towards kids. It was similar to what's on his Comedy specials....definitely different than what it would have been if it'd been at an over 21 venue, though.

Like I said, it really wasn't racy at all. Was there stuff they didn't get? Yep. But they liked it and it wasn't that big of a deal. I admit I'm more lax about language than other parents I know, as long as my kids know it's not appropriate for them to say....
