I dont live near Thirsk but have been on holiday there many times as a young girl with my family. My Mum was born at Catterick Camp which isnt far from there, so she is a Yorkshire lass! If i recall correctly Thirsk is where James had his vetinary practise, its a lovely Market village and they used to have a museum there dedicated to him.
I also love James Herriott books and the series of the telelvision was excellent, a real must for Herriott fans. I liked it so much i called my 2nd son Callum after Callum Bucannon If you can get the series on DVD or video, you'd really enjoy it!
Yes, I'm about 12 miles up the A19 from Thirsk, we sometimes go shopping there and DS gets his hair cut there! It is a nice little place and there is a relatively new Herriott centre museum type of thing there, our kids went on a trip out with school to it last year. I'm sure if you google it you'll find a web site, and I know they used to do seasonal activities.
The DVD's are from the series, the movie came before the series. James was played by a different person in the movie. Callum Buchanon was a vet that came into it after James had gone to war, Tristan moves away and Callum comes to the practise, he's from Scotland and he keeps a badger that keeps running up peoples fireplaces!!! After chatting yesterday, l watched 2 episodes on our tv, oh i still love it, the stories are just fantastic
