Anyone know about Los Angeles?

I am thinking of moving to Los Angeles in about a year. At this point, it's totally just an idea in the twinkle of my eye, but I wanted some input and I couldn't think of a better place to come.

I know very, very little about Los Angeles and the surrounding area. I am a single twenty-something who will be looking to work in the television industry (NOT as an actor, but in producing). I am looking for a safe area, does not need to be totally family-friendly at this point. Not too expensive and close to shopping, grocery, etc. Hopefully would be close-ish to where a lot of the entertainment companies are based (if there even is such a place).

The only thing I've heard is that in L.A. you want to live somewhere close to where you work. As I don't know where that would be yet, I am just looking for suggestions of areas to keep in mind and look out for. And what the pros and cons of those areas might be. Any input anyone has would be greatly appreciated!

If this happens, I greatly look forward to my first ever trip to Disneyland!!!

Not to discourage you, but the cost of living is way up there. LA is a huge area, endless really, full of persons trying to break into the industry. I would suggest trying to get an internship or something at a cable station or something or other to get your foot in the door.

Thanks for the suggestion. I live in NYC now so I truly already get the high cost of living. And I didn't mention this in my original post, but I have a few connections to the industry out there due to what I do here now. I'm not just going out there to start knocking on doors and sending out mass resumes.

If you live in NYC, you know what our prices are like. I'm in the industry and it is fairly spread out.

The main areas for entertainment jobs are:

Burbank/Studio City
Santa Monica
Hollywood

These areas are not geographically near each other as far as driving goes. It can take up to two hours to get from Burbank to Santa Monica in traffic. Hollywood is in the middle, but there is a huge hill between the valley areas and the city.

You can also get lucky like me. At my last job, I lived in the West Side and was transferred to our Studio City location. Gee, thanks?

I think Hollywood and Studio City would be your best bet for a lower rent price. Are you renting or buying?

Oh, and we don't have ANY public transportation. We have a train, but it doesn't go where most people want/need to go.

That about sums it up. Oh, and make sure you don't own a stick-shift.

Good luck! :goodvibes

Thank you SO MUCH for these suggestions! I will do some research on those areas.

I will definitely be renting, not buying. I'm looking forward (if this happens) to driving again as opposed to relying on public transportation, as convenient as it is here.
