There is a new sequel to The Giver and Gathering Blue. by Lois Lowry. It's called Messenger. DD found the book on tape in the library, and we're listening to it in the car. You do find out what happens to Jonas from The Giver and to Kira from Gathering Blue. (We haven't gotten far enough in yet to hear about Kira. Matty from Gathering Blue is the main character.)

For those who haven't read these, they're futuristic YA (young adult) fiction about societies that emerge after some undefined tragedy strikes earth. The Giver is about a Utopian society, and about the price of utopia. (It's a controversial book; some people don't think kids should read it because it deals with difficult issues like euthanasia and infanticide.) Gathering Blue takes place at about the same time, in a more savage, primitive society. The new book, Messenger, takes place about 8 years later, in yet a different village/society.

DS 11 read The Giver this year for English. He asked me to read it too. It was definitely worth reading. We had some great conversations about it. I was amazed at some of his insights into the story line!

I haven't heard of Gathering Blue or Messenger, but I'll have to check them out now::yes:: Thanks!

wow..i read the giver like 6 or 7 years ago..but i remmeber most of it!! didnt know there was more to it!

I'll have to look into those for my DD who will be 12 in a couple of weeks. Might be something she'd enjoy! Thanks for mentioning it!
