DH found out yesterday that we're supposed to be in Galesville, WI for his job next week. I'm having a hard time finding a place to stay within a reasonable driving distance. We'll be there for 2 weeks to a month & would prefer a home, cottage, cabin, etc. over a hotel. (We're both beyond tired of living out of a hotel.) We do have to stay within a budget, so we can't book a home that is twice as much as we could book a hotel for. All that said, I would really appreciate suggestions for any towns I should be checking for accommodations.

We live 20 min from Galesville!
Any suggestions for where I should be looking for a place to stay?

ETA: I just saw your edit. We'd prefer to be within reasonable driving distance of the park he'll be working at & have access to at least a few restaurants & stores.

How far is too far? I would be looking on airbnb or vrbo in towns including:

Galesville itself is a cute little town
Trempealau (more rural) 10 min
Blair (more rural) 20 min
Holmen - 15 min
Onalaska - 20-30 min

With that being said, the area itself isn't super dense when it comes to airbnb and vrbo options especially for shorter term rentals. Best of luck! I am happy to answer any other questions you may have.

What is reasonable to you time wise?

Blair will be the most rural out of all of them.

La Crosse/Onalaska will have a lot of eating options but is at least 30-45 minutes to Galesville.

Thanks so much. Galesville sounds perfect. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find accommodations there. I'll definitely check again. Otherwise, 20-30 minutes will be fine. Would we have access to restaurants & a store in the rural areas or should I check the others first?

Galesville will have a grocery store and a few restaurants. It is a cute little town. Blair would have the least. Holmen and Onalaska are smushed together and have a lot more and La Crosse too.

I thought there was an airbnb on the main street of Galesville at one point but maybe its booked. Lemme see if I can find it.

I was looking yesterday & found two promising places in Galesville, but neither was available for our entire stay. :( We'd be willing to move once or twice, but not every 2 or 3 days.

I think that may be your toughest part......finding a place for an extended period of time but less than 6 months.

I'm sure it will be. I wish we didn't always have to plan last minute stays.

I'll look into the places you suggested. If I don't find anything in one of those, I'll be back for suggestions further away. Thanks again for the help. I really appreciate it.

No worries! Best of luck.

Update: As is par for the course with DH's job, things didn't go as originally planned. We eventually did make it here last night. We decided to stay in La Crosse/Onalaska for our first stay. The hotel appears to be in a great location. Dinner last night was perfect! We should be leaving here by the weekend, then returning in a couple weeks. I think we've decided to stay in Winona next, just to experience both locations.

Thanks again for the help. So far, Wisconsin has been a pleasure.

Glad to hear it! At least the weather hasn't been too hot.

@vicarrieous, sorry it took so long, but I wanted to get back to you to tell you how much we loved La Crosse. It was our favorite place we visited in the 4 months we were away. If we didn't have family in North Carolina that we've lived away from for too many years, we'd spend our summers in La Crosse, when DH retires. You live a wonderful area.
