Anyone have to sell for illness?

I own a DVC contract and have payments for that until 2011.
I also just bought into SSR and have the 10 year plan. I haven't had problems until now.
I was just diagnosed with Breast Cancer and have to take time off work for surgery and chemo. Not sure how long, until they do the biopsy of the area but since there is lymph gland involvment it will be at least 6 months.
I won't have disability until 6 months from now and only have 3 months sick and vacation time saved. So for 3 months I will have no income. I have some oney coming from my dad's estate as soon as his home is sold but I can't count on it until the estate is settled. And with 5 siblings it might not be alot, and I would use it for my mortgage.
Will DVC let me take time off payments or would you recommend selling at this time. I hate the thought of selling, I really love my DVC.
Has anyone else had to go through this and has Disney been understanding?
I will call my sales rep tomorrow, but you people always seem to know the right answers. Peggie

Hi Peggie,

I am so sorry to hear about your cancer. My aunt went through it a few years ago and you will be in my prayers. She really did well and is fine now. She is in her 70s.

You could always rent your points to make your payments if you wanted to. We have been doing this since my oldest went to college. Finally we have realized that we have too many points and other timeshares and are going to sell some of both. Luckily I have our DVC in different contracts.

We also own at VWL and BWV and both are sold out through Disney. You should have no problems selling your contract if you decide to do this. Or renting points if you want to take a wait and see approach.

Maybe you could sell one and keep one even if you rent those points to make the payments.

Hang in there. Don't think I've ever read anyone post about options, if they're having difficulty making payments. You won't know until you ask.

I can recall hearing about some mortgage companies would let people just pay the interest and extend the loan out further (or perhaps people had to play 'catch up'), but don't know if this is a possibility.

I wish you the very best of luck with your health and with this financial situation. There are many treatment options that can be totally effective.

So sorry to hear of your medical condition.

My advice is that you should contact MS (accounting), and let them know your situation. I believe that when I originally read through my bajillion sheet long contract, there was something in the financing paperwork that stated they could do a hardship deferral of payments in a case like yours. If I recall correctly, you just can't use your points until you resume making payments.

Peggie, I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I know this is a very scary time for you, and it's hard to see things in a positive light. Every case is different so I would advise you to play it by ear. They say never to make any sort of big decisions immediately after you've been given such shocking news.

You might not have to miss that much work at all. My mother had her entire right lung removed and was back at work eight weeks later, she was a hairdresser. She had radiation and some chemo but worked while she was undergoing those treatments and she was 63 at the time. I'm not saying that you should be able to do this. Like I said, every case is different.

I would start out renting your points to cover the maintence fees, then later, if you feel it's nessecary, sell. You probably won't feel like the hassel of renting points at this time in your life, so I would chose a trusted friend or relative to handle it for you. Good luck, Peggy, you'll be in my prayers.

I agree that renting your points may be worth pursuing if you don't really want to sell. Just be very certain that you will be able to keep up the payments to DVC. DVC will cancel any pending stays if you fall behind in payments, which could impact those to whom you are renting the points.

My support and prayers will be with you also. I am sorry I am unable to answer your original question regarding the deferral of payments. However, I would strongly encourage you to try and hold onto your DVC membership if at all possible. It sounds as if it is very important to you, and brings you a great deal of joy. Obviously, the next six months of your life will be difficult, and your future times at WDW will give you something to look forward to. Best of luck and I will be thinking of you.

Unfortunately I took my family on a trip, gave my son and new DIL 2 weeks for their honeymoon and used some points myself. I only have about 65 points left until Aug 2005, my new use year.
I know that I will be out of work for at least the time I am going through chemo because I am a nurse at a college clinic. I am the only nurse from 4 to midnight, sometimes I don't even have a secretary. With flu season and seasonal colds I know my doctors will want me to stay away from everyone. So no work for me during chemo.
I will call my salesperson tomorrow and ask him what he suggests but I will also get the number of the accounting dept. I would hate to give up my DVC. Peggie

Given that you just bought recently, and your contract is stripped, you probably won't be able to sell for what you bought it for. Leaving you with no contract AND some remaining mortgage. Given this - and that you expect your lack of money to be short term - and that it sounds like DVC does work for you and is something you value - I'd try your best to work with MS and/or rent the few remaining points you have to cover payments. Perhaps your family, who you treated so generously, would be willing to help pick up payments over the three months you won't have income.

I would also suggest that you determine how much your payments and maintenace will be for those 3 months and rent your remaining 2004 points plus as many points as it takes from the 2005 use year. Since your use year is August you have a lot of flexibility. You can borrow from 2005 to make a reservation from now until Aug 1, 2005 or you can bank into 2005 for reservations after.

I know this is not on subject but I think you have to have a vision of being cancer free and enjoying that knowledge while planning your next Disney Trip. Believe it and it will happen.

Don't worry about the DVC sale, you an always buy back but don't loose that goal of being cancer free as you spot the castle once again.

As someone above mentioned, consider renting the points. If you're up to it. I'm sure some people on this board could give you advice and walk you through the procedure. I would but have never rented my points out.

Maybe your sibs would be interested in renting them with some of their inheritance money. Or maybe that wouldn't be a good idea -- depending on your relationship with them.
