Anyone have this type of problem with their pregnancy?

Well, a few weeks ago my 20 year old single niece finally told the family that she is pregnant. It's not what anybody wanted for her at this time, but we are there for support and help any way we can. I'm 9 years older than my niece and we've always been more like sisters than niece/aunt. Anyway, the surprising part is that she is not only pregnant, she is 4 months pregnant! The baby is due in mid August. She went for an ultrasound last week to determine the baby's sex. They weren't able to determine it, but we all think it's a girl (that's all we ever have in my family). Anyway, the baby has an enlarged bladder and it's not draining. She has an appt. with a specialist tomorrow to learn more info. Anybody have any experience with this and what was the outcome? You can give it to me straight. This is for my info only. I wouldn't dare tell her anything that might cause worry. I"ll leave that to the doc.

Sounds like an obstruction. Did they tell her anything else, possible amniotic fluid volume? I would guess that they will want to do a lot of ultrasounds and to look at the kidney's. Maybe some other tests... Not usally anything horrible as far as I know.

Try a google search for "fetal urinary tract obstruction"

My daughter was diagnosed in utero with numerous kidney (bladder) issues and she is a happy and healthy 8 year old! It could be anything, including nothing at all.

With my daughter, we went in every 4-6 weeks for an ultrasound to check on the fluid level in her kidneys and they kept close tabs on her growth. It might be a possible blocked ureter, or kidney reflux (Vesicoureteral Reflux), or again, possibly nothing at all.

My daughter had a blocked ureter, a duplicated collecting system, and kidney reflux. She did have four surgeries before age 3-1/2 years, but she is 100% healthy with 100% function in her kidney (one did have to be removed), and is doing so well, she no longer sees a specialist.

Your sister's doctors will keep a close eye on her child and will be upfront and honest with her if there is cause for concern. Knowing she'll be seeing a specialist so soon is a good thing for her and her baby.

I showed my husband your post (he graduates medical school on May 21st which is why I asked him) and he said it's possibly a blunted urethra, since the bladder is full but nothing is coming out. The problem with that would be oligohydramneous, where there's not enough amniotic fluid since the baby isn't producing any urine. If often causes their face to looks smushed at birth since there isn't much fluid to cushion the baby, which is called Potter's Sequence (but not Potter's Syndrome, which is different but also has the smushed face at delivery). Good luck to your niece-I'm guessing she's around 23 weeks or so, right, (basing that on my due date of 8/28) so at least she found out now and is meeting with a specialist cause that may help put her mind at ease.
