Can anyone help me recreate this foggy childhood memory? My Mom used to make a tuna casserole when I was a kid that featured: tuna, mashed potato and hard boiled egg. The recipe was lost many years ago and DM can no longer remember it. :sad2: I have been searching and can't find the recipe anywhere.

Could it be that there were only those three ingredients??? Anyone out there make/remember anything similar? I know it was a very simple, inexpensive dish not something gourmet. I'd love to make it again. I remember thinking it looked disgusting and not wanting to try it - but when I did - it was yummy:)

I would imagine there was some sort of liquid binding the tuna and egg, with the mash on the top (as you say "mornay" could it be a cheesy sauce? Or a tin of soup?) sort of like fish pie.

alternatively, my mum used to make "cheese pie" (mash with cheese in it, heated through/browned in the oven) and salmon fishcakes (tinned salmon and mash, shaped into patties and fried briefly to brown), so i suppose you could fold tuna and chopped egg through mash and give it the same treatment.

Try both and see what you like/remember!

Thank you MazdaUK. I do wonder what the 4th "mystery" ingredient could be. Maybe cheese, another egg or a white sauce???

The egg was hardboiled and chopped, then mixed with the mashed potato/tuna part. Or maybe sliced and put on top?? (Boy, the more I think about it, the more disgusting it seems!:rotfl:) I've asked my older sister if she remembers it. She said that she, too, loved it but doesn't remember how it was made.

Anyone?

Thank you Tink1964. It's funny that the two responses I got would come from so far away from me. I think the neighbor that originally gave my Mom the the recipe may have been from Nova Scotia. Well, small world....:)

I googled using the words tuna and "mash" (as MazdaUK referred to mashed potato) and came up with a couple of recipes for "tuna mash." Putting all the ideas together with what I remember, I think if I mix tuna with potato and chopped eggs and bake it in a casserole with cheese on top it might be what I'm thinking of. If it's too dry, I'll try making a white sauce.

I know it seems silly to search for something like this, but DM's health is not good and I could use a little nostalgic comfort food these days.

I hope it works out & is as yummy as it sounds.
There is nothing better than comfort food when your not well.
 to DM

You could always just add a little milk to the mix if it seems dry (less work ;) )
