Im so gald that whenever I have any strange physical symptoms, I can come here and usually find someone who has had something similar or at least has ideas of what Im talking about. ;)

So, does anyone know what it means, when you have an extremely dry mouth? I drink no less than 80 oz of water a day so I doubt Im dehydrated. A few days ago I noticed my mouth felt really dry and then last night I woke up a few times over night with an incredibly dry mouth. It was so bad I felt like I was having trouble breathing in through my mouth.
Im going to try to have 1 extra cup(16 oz) of water today to see if that helps. So far I do still feel a little drier than normal, but not too bad. Any ideas?

i have this all the time. for me atleast, its because i sleep with my mouth open and the moisture "leaks"

hmmm...on any new meds? (sometimes that causes dry mouth)
working out any harder then normal?

I find that the more water I get...the thirstier I actually get. I tend to drink around 100oz of water...and find when I DON'T get that much water on a certain day...I'm even more thirsty then normal.

just some thoughts...

I had this happen to me back in January. It was horrible and lasted for weeks. I finally figured out that it was due to a change in my medication. For years I've been taking Prilosec. My insurance company switched me to generic Prilosec (omeprazole) and about 2 days after taking it I got a horrible dry mouth. The worst part was is that there wasn't a direct cause and effect. The dry mouth didn't stop right away if I stopped the generic Prilosec. So it took me awhile to figure it was the meds.

There are also autoimmune disorders which cause dry mouth/dry eyes. Sjogrens Syndrome comes to mind. If the problem is ongoing, you should get it checked out. But medication is the big culprit. My mouth was dry but I didn't feel thirsty necessarily.

My dad had this problem right before he found out he was diabetic. He was drinking a lot of water too, but he was drinking a lot of water because his mouth was always so dry. I don't know if it's the dry mouth that was really related to the diabetease or not, but the docs told him that drinking all the water was a sign of it.

CamColt,
I guess the question is, are you REALLY thirsty or do you just drink a lot anyway. Is the mouth just dry feeling or is a thirsty feeling? There is a difference. When my mouth was dry I never felt thirsty, although drinking something helped for about 10 seconds!

A few years ago, I was tested for Sjogrens Syndrome because I had extremely dry eyes, among a few other little things. It came out negative. But I do remember the doctor asking if my mouth was dry too. It wouldn't hurt to go get it checked out. Best of luck to you, and in the meantime, drink lots of water and keep hard candies with you to keep the dryness to a minimum.

Yikes! Lots of stuff out there on this.
Thanks for all the info everyone. Ill look into it and if it keeps up, Ill see a doctor. :D

I usually "feel" like I have a dry mouth when I'm getting a cold or sinus infection. It's because of mouth breathing drying the mouth out. Drinking fluids does no good...but usually cough drops or hard candy helps.

There are also some foods that can make it seem like your mouth is very dry.
Pizza usually has this effect.
I find that several hours after eating pizza, I have to drink water constantly.

I'd say meds too. Blood pressure medicine can be a big culprit.

OT, but I took DS to a new dentist last week. She said that with so many people on meds like HBP and anti-depressants these days, they are seeing more and more cavities.

She explained that a lot of saliva is a good thing. It washes away bacteria, etc. When someone has a dry mouth, it promotes tooth decay (and unforunately bad breath).
