Last Monday I was sitting cross-legged on the couch with my DD sitting on my lap. My leg must have fallen asleep but I didn't notice it as it was not the pins and needles sensation, but just numb. I went to stand up not knowing this, and my foot/ankle twisted in a funky way. It didn't hurt at first obviously because my lower leg was numb from cutting off circulation....

The next morning I went to get out of bed and it HURT.... didn't hurt while lying down, but just when I went to stand on it...:confused3 I did the "RICE" protocol all day/night.

Wednesday morning, my foot/ankle felt pretty good. I went to my friend's house w/ my ACE bandage on and my ice packs to continue RICE"ing".... She's a nurse and commented that from the back, my calf was quite swollen

I did RICE all day long Wed. and then Thurs., called my MD. Got an appt. for the afternoon. By then, the swelling had subsided and I hadn't had any pain since Tuesday with the foot/ankle... no pain in the leg ever. She said if it swelled up again, she'd order an ultrasound to r/o DVT... .

Friday it was swollen again :scared1: Had the U/S in the afternoon which was negative.

It's still swollen... but not just the calf-now it's been the entire leg since Friday :rolleyes1:confused3

I'm VERY worried because we leave for Disney in 17 days!!! It's a surprise trip leaving ON my older DD's 9th bday.... we have to FLY....

Anyone with any experience having the swelling after a foot/ankle injury??? How long did it take to subside? I'm so paranoid that I'll develop a blood clot from either flying or all the walking. Oh, and it's not a HUGE swelling, but it's noticeable... about 1/2"-1" larger than the left leg depending on the time of day...AND there's been no pain.

I should add that I'm on hydrochlorothiazide for hereditary blood pressure issues, so I can't be retaining water....??????????????????

I am healthy otherwise....

Any input would be appreciated!!! :) Calling my MD again tomorrow when she's back in the office.....

My first thought is you have a blood clot. I would go have it checked out ASAP!!!! Call you DR today. You probably should go in to the ER and have an ultrasound done today.

The ultrasound Friday ruled out a blood clot and DVT-it was negative for both.... the swelling has been since Wednesday.

My only SEVERELY sprained (or any sprained) was in 1986/1987. I was not taken to the doctor out of parental ignorance. When I say severe, I mean severe. No hyperbole, but my foot/ankle was so sensitive that if you touched any super light weight object like a feather (I used a piece of paper)--the pain was indescribable. It throbbed just from very light pressure and I could not put any weight on my foot even in the next day. I only forced myself to apply weight b/c there would be no doctor and school was my safe haven. It took an entire day to be able to tolerate the pain to bear weight.

That being said--the entire leg did not swell and that cannot be a good sign.

Your injury sounds like it can be more severe than a sprain. I have been told in retrospect that since it took months for my ankle to heal that I may have torn ligaments or done something worse but I will never know.

I would get your leg checked ASAP to rule out the clot as that could be quite life threatening.

Did you have X-rays or MRI to rule out fracture or bone chips that got into muscle tissue or anything like that?

Are you elevating your leg (I know you said RICE, but am asking again anyway. ;))?

Have you been applying weight to your ankle or are you using crutches?

No MRI or x-rays... I was going to request one or both tomorrow when my MD is back in the office....I've only had the ultrasound.

I have been elevating my leg for the majority of the days(and of course at night). I'm also walking around periodically trying to avoid a blood clot....

I have to mention again that I have NO pain at all... not in my ankle, foot, leg.... none. My foot hurt the first day, but then it was fine after that???
