Anyone have stories or remember the former "Beautiful"Mt Airy Lodge of the Poconos?

Grew up in CT - as soon as I thought of Mt. Airy lodge, I also remembered "Penn Hills for Lovers Only" - remember that one?

Believe it or not, those commercials aired here in Cleveland (Ohio) on cable because we used to get one of the New York City stations. I used to watch Dr. Who on Saturdays and got my fill of not only "Beautiful Mt. Airy Lodge", but also those annoying commericals for Carvel Ice Cream cakes. Yikes.

Brittwoman- an ear full and a lesson on pineapple rings???? I'll assume a
full explanation would require an adult only filter. Long Islander ?
Born and raised on the Island myself.

Well we can get around the filter....there were cans of pineapple rings in the window...each morning we would go past the room after a long night of a noisy room next door and there would be one less can of pineapples....we sort of thin they were playing ring toss or something like that LOL...That was about the most exciting thing happening in that place too LOL....wasn't one of our more exciting vacations!

"Hi, I'm Tom Carvel and I sound like I smoke a carton of Camels every day!"

Cookie Puss!
Cookie O'Puss!
The Whale of a Dad Cake
Fudgie the Whale

I think all of these cakes used the same molds.

(yes, I'm a Carvel addict-at least I don't have to travel five hours to get a brown bonnet anymore!)

My favorite was a cavel thinny thin ice cream commercial...it was tom carvel and some carvel store owner...they were on there and a bit on the chubby side and I forget their name but lets just say the Smiths and Tom carvel said ... "thinny thin ice cream...for fattie fats like the Smiths"

and how wonderful in all your journeys together aprilgail2, you have the
beloved "beautiful" Mt Airy Lodge pineapple memory to live forever in your hearts.

Speaking of Mr " I sound like a whole carton of smokes when I talk" Carvel,
do any of you agree with my observation of how he deceitfully disguised
the real message behind "individual store owner" as a happy message when in reality it was just his way of saying, "don't blame me!!!!"

My husband always says "thinny thin, for our fatty fat friends", lol!

Okay, jumping to channel 9, WOR, remember the "Chiller" on Saturday afternoons? that hand scared me when I was very small!

Suzanne

Ah , yes Suzanne the dreaded six fingered hand signaling the beginning of
another "b "rated horror flick, as it would "eat" the letters that spelled out chiller and go back underground signaling the end of the movie.

Do you remember as well the 430 movie? Especially during, monster week?!?

Yes, the 4:30 movie was cause for my older sister to make popcorn!

ACK! To many memories being brought up to the surface. Must surpress them now! Must forget the jingle.

ARGH!!

To late. Now it is stuck in my head for another 20 years. That damn Mt. Airy Lodge song is in my head forever. Thanks alot!

I grew up in Rockland County NY, so I must have seen that commercial a million times or more. And now it is back stuck in my head...All because of this thread.

I think I need to go find one of my Disney CDs now & end the madness.

Bless you lclark0621, your post, and one's similar to it make all the effort
in typing these treasured memories worth it.

Tell me which one makes you sicker, "Beautiful Mt Airy Lodge" or
"226-0841, The Pocono Gardens Lodge"?

Bumping. Any more "beautiful" memories out there to share of the beloved
"Beautiful Mt Airy Lodge"? I'm sure there must a few left.

OMG I'll never forget the man's voice from the Carvel ice cream commercials! His voice was worse than nails on a chalkboard!!

I don't remember Wonderama, The Magic Garden or Hatchy Milachy, they must've come along when I was older. My generation watched Romper Room, PixAnn and Sally Star! Oh yeah, and the Gene London Show!

I know this is an old thread, but I just found it, and felt compelled to post.

Another displaced New Yorker who grew up there in the 70s, with memories of watching Channels 5, 9, and 11 after school. Will be happy to wax on Magic Garden, Romper Room, and kids yelling 'pix! pix! pix! to shoot at spaceships at another time. Not to mention how Carvel's Santa Claus and Fudgey the Whale were from the same mold.

Anyway, just returned from the Poconos after ten years (spent honeymoon there). Stayed at Fernwood (much more than a motel these days), but ten years ago, spent a week at Poconos Garden Lodge, and reveled in the cheesiness of all three resorts (Stricklands and BEAUTIFUL Mount Airy Lodge). Nothing was falling around us then, but could see the potential for rapid dilapidation. Went back to see if the rumors about the properties were true, and in fact, they were. :sad1: Mount Airy Lodge is completely gone, except for the golf course, the backhoes and the construction vehicles. Pocono Gardens Lodge is still standing, but completely boarded up, overgrown, and covered in graffiti. The end of an era - but the jingle will forever ring in my head.
