Anyone have any ideas on how to do Hawaii on a strict budget?

We paid $128 with Alamo for a mid-sized. Not sure what specials DH found, I think a day free coupon, I can ask. We rented from the Alamo a few blocks from the airport, much cheaper than renting from our hotel. We just took the shuttle.

Ok, DH is getting ready to retire from the military and has always wanted to go to Hawaii. I would love to surprise him w/a trip to Hawaii for retirement but I just have this feeling we'd be bored. I know we can stay at Hale Koa, his buddy is a pilot for continental so we can even get "buddy passes dirt cheap"... I know it is absolutely beautiful...but what all is there to do? I'm afraid DS5 wont have much to do??? He has a friend there that does helicopter tours...so he can hook us up there....ds loves sea turtles, I took him to the sea turtle farms in Cayman Islands :).... he would love to swim w/dolphins...but what else is there to do? Thanks so much for any ideas!!!

For those renting A;amo from Costco, check the rate! Mine went down again!!! I saved another $40 off the already huge cuts i found a few weeks ago.

We've been to Hale Koa 3 times and never got bored! There is a lot to do on Military Discounts on Ohau. The beach at Hale Koa can't be beat. It's a private beach on Waikiki that's patrolled by MPs. With your IDs, you should be able to get into Pearl Harbor Navy Base and check out Schofield Barracks, etc. There's Diamond Head to Climb, and snorkeling at Hanamua Bay (sp?) is incredible!

It's been 5 years since our last visit and I can't wait to go back. P.S. Hale Koa has a Commissary / PX in it and 5 restaurants I think.

Make your activity reservations before you leave home!! Here now and everything gets booked well in advance.

Kauai is gorgeous!

I just wanted to add that if anyone has any questions for me (we went to Hawaii/Waikiki in May 06 and stayed at the Hale Koa) please PM me, I don't really check this thread that often.

Thanks!

Can I also recommend Killer Tacos on the North Shore in Waimea (?)

How did you get such a great rate with Alamo? We are going in September and I am not finding anything close to that. The cheapest I can find is $249/including taxes and fees with Hertz and a delta skymiles discount.

Would be great to know your secret. ;)

Thanks,

We've taken two trips to Hawaii. The first was for our honeymoon in July '04 on Kauai. We stayed in a condo for $85 a night. Price was right, but kind of a disappointment for a honeymoon. We still had a great time though. Did a helicopter tour (which was incredible!), lots of day hikes to waterfalls, kayaked up the Wailea river, great meals, etc. We used the kitchen for making sandwiches to take on our day hikes, but other than that didn't really use the kitchen. I can see how with a family it would be worth it though. As far as meals we really liked Roy's in Poipu and Coconuts. We did not love the Smith Luau, and wouldn't really recommend it.

We just got back from Maui. We stayed at the Sheraton in Kaanapali and loved it. We got one of those deals in the mail ($750 for 5 nights including rental car and $75 food credits). We added a night through Priceline for $200. They invited us to a timeshare presentation (which was really really tempting) and gave us another $100 in food credits. Even with the credits we spent A LOT at the pool bar. It was kind of shocking how fast those drinks added up. We did the Road to Hana, which was super long. I guess I'm glad I did it once, but don't plan to do it again. I prefered the beaches in Maui, but enjoyed the peacefulness in Kauai more. Things were so much closer. We had great meals at Mama's Fishhouse and Leilani's on the beach.

I have to thank all of you for providing that little "push". I did it...I booked a trip. I had free Southwest air from our many trips to Disney, to take to CA, and a voucher for air (from taking a bump) that we can use to cover most of our air from CA to Honolulu! So our total costs out of pocket for air is $303 for two, from NYS (and I sold one of my SW rewards for $360 to make up that difference on eBay)! We are leaving NY and going to San Francisco September 18th for a few days with friends, to site see and drive up to see the Redwoods. Then, on the 22nd we are flying to Honolulu, whre we will spend 3 days on that Island, and then onto the Norwegian Sprit of Hawaii for a 7 day cruise of the Islands. I'll still be trying to figure out where to stay the 22 - 25th, so keep the ideas coming. I'd like it to be sort of close to where the boat leaves, so if you know where that is..pass over the ideas!
Edited to add: if we get a car at the airport, how do we return it, when we go to get on the boat?

What kind of Hotel are you looking for...one that the locals stay at or a Hilton. The Harbor where you will leave from is right next to the Aloha Tower. There aren't any hotels really near there. I think the closest one may be the Ala Moana hotel where many of us locals stay. It is right next to our biggest shopping center (or Mall as mainlanders call it). If you want something more local and economical than that you can stay at the Pagoda. There are little hotels on the outside of Waikiki that you can stay at that are probably small but cheaper. I'm not sure. I think your best bet would be to take a taxi to the Aloha Tower. If you have to return your car probably near the airport you could stay at the Holiday Inn there. It's a place to stay and in an industrial area. I saw a woman dropping her car off at Enterprise the other day which is a bit closer to the dock. I'm not sure if there are shuttles that go to the Aloha Tower. The main thing is to search on transportation to Aloha Tower. The tower is the first thing you see when you come in and the last thing you see when you leave our lovely state. PM me if you need more info. The best way I can describe our harbor is like when we went on the Disney cruise out of L.A. the boat left from the middle of nowhere. That's kind of like how it is here too...but there is a nice marketplace right next to it here in Hawaii.

We're looking at the Ohana Waikiki West..used to be Outriiger, for $93 plus tax. It's supposed to be 2 blocks from beach, in the middle of lots of stuff. Is that good?

What an amazing trip! We loved every bit of Kauai! For those going soon, you don't need a tour to do the waterfall jumping. Kipu Falls are really easy to get to and what fun to jump off! For golf, we found the best secret! Kuku-O-Lono is the best deal. It has gorgeous views. It was one sugar barron's private course and when he died he willed it to the people of the island for a park and public course. It was 9 holes but you can play as many times through as you want. I think adults are....get this.....$8 and kids are $3. Even with renting clubs for 3 and the course fees & carts it was only about $40! The little Japanese garden which is part of one of the holes ut not fully on the course is a beautiful spot to picnic. There are chickens with babies and beautiful landscaping. Such fun!

Great meals at Roy's, Keoki's(we were surprised with how good this one was) The Puka Dog is my children's favorite place now. In the north we found a great bargain at Paradise Bar & Grill, plus lots of good meals at the regualar places that are more easily seen. In Lihue and I think I also saw one in Hanapepe is a place called No. 1. What a bargian for lunch. It is a chinese kind of plate lunch thing. You get either rice or noodles with a choice of entree for like $3.45. 2 choices just a little more. Huge portions. They have a regular menu also. Super cheese burgers were aout $3.00.

Rented a kayak and went out on that ourselves. Snorkeling was amazing. Beautiful views and water. Every sight looks like a postcard.

From the website it looks like you are in the middle of Waikiki. The main street that you can see the beach from is Kalakaua. You are on Kuhio....one long block away from the beach. You are close to Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. If you don't mind walking or you'll drive your car you'll be fine. It might be about a 15 min. walk to the beach...but hey you can't beat the price. Don't expect a Hyatt or a Hilton...these hotels are usually on the smaller side but clean. I haven't been to this one...but if it has good reviews it must be clean. This is definatly in the heart of Waikiki for the price it beat Ala Moana Hotel if you want to be in the middle of Waikiki. Hope this helps. I think you'll have to return your car to the office near the airport and take a cab to the ship. Shouldn't be too much. Hope this helps.

I'm expecting a room just a bit bigger than Pop Century, according to what's posted.
We aren't sure if we will get a car yet..looks like there are tours to just about everything we want to see, or public transportation, or even cabs.
I did just realize when we come back from the cruise, the boat docks at 7 am and embarkment is about 9. Our plane doesn't leave until 10:45 pm. I'm looking for ideas of what to do with our luggage (and ourselves) until that time. Can we take a cab to the airport and check our luggage that early? Then maybe take a cab to someplace that has a tour? Our choices were either not enough time to catch the plane, or wayyyy too much.

We do know about the down sides to FreeStyle Cruising (sailed to Bermuda from Boston on NCL),
What would those be?

Answering my own question. Thanks to numerous Disney trips, we have one free day with National. I just booked a one day free car rental ($3 something for tax) and we'll take a cab to the airport, get the car (is National right at the airport? I assume so, since they accepted our emerald Aisle), and go off for more siteseeing, before our late flight. Any ideas on how much to expect to pay for the cab fare from the boat dock, to the airport? And will there be taxi's right there to take people, or is there a shuttle to the airport? Thanks.

Hi, Everyone!

Well, we've been back for about two weeks now, finally finished unpacking the laundry!

I don't mean to turn this into a trip report, just some highlights--

We stayed Kauai 5 nights at Marriott Waiohai Beach club. A first-rate place! We got a 2 bdr, 2 bath condo with complete kitchen, Beautiful, large, lovely pool, also got a great rate--$750 total, includes tax and rental car, for 5 nights! That's just a special introductory offer, not to be repeated. The going price for this joint is around $400-$450 per night, a little out of our range. I told the kids to remember this, we won't be making a habit of staying in such expensive places again (unless I can scrape together enough Marriott Rewards points!)

Next island--6 nights Maui, Embassy Suites. Again, a winner! This time, just a one bdr, one bath condo with "kitchenette" (microwave/fridge,coffee maker/dishwasher--so who needs a stove?) Again, great place--right on nice section of beach & huge pool!

Next stop--Waikiki! It doesn't get any better than this! Our hotel--Hilton Hawaiian Village, which is a village and resort unto itself. The price? Nothing! That's right--zilch, zero, nada--used Hilton Honor points (took 2 years to get enough) for 6 free nights (we left late day five, called it the 6th night). So for free, just about any room would do, right? Well, I just asked if we could get a room in the Rainbow Tower. Since we're Hilton Gold members, we not only got a Rainbow Tower, but upgraded to an Executive king suite! On the 28th floor, with 2 bathrooms, an L-shaped room with a king, sleeper sofa, sent up a roll away cot for dd at no extra charge! We had a fantastic view of the harbor. I thought it looked familiar, later learned I had seen it before. Do any of you remember the old series "Gilligan's Island"? Remember the opening, showing the boats at the harbor? Well, that was the harbor it was filmed from! I could sit on my balcony every morning, drink coffee, and look right down to where the 'Minnow' was launched! I sang the theme song from Gilligan's Island for my kids, surprised I remembered it all without missing a beat, both kids stared at me open-mouthed then said "that's even dumber than that song you sing M-I-C-K-E-Y....." Oh, well, they just don't appreciate culture! Great trip, except for the day I ended up in the ER............kind of dumb of me............I'm always looking out for the family, failed to take care of myself. I got seriously dehydrated. I first noticed it when my mouth was dry and no amount of drinking water relieved it. So, I just went back to sleep. Woke up the next day with a splitting headache, just took some Tylenol, we had a scheduled tour of the Polynesian Cultural Center with bus transportation and I didn't want to miss it. I finally realized something was seriously wrong when I got dizzy and almost passed out eating breakfast. Fortunately, we were at the hotel (Rainbow Lanai) so it was just a short elevator ride to the room. I still stubbornly insisted I was fine, just needed some rest. Then I suggested dh take the kids to PCC and I would spend the day resting, figured I had just overdone it, and I didn't want to ruin the day for everyone else. Well, dh wouldn't hear of leaving me like that (I couldn't walk straight). Much to my great embarassment, he called for an ambulance. Next thing I know, there's paramedics all over my room. "No, I don't want to go to a hospital! I want to go to PCC!" Well, when you're in an ambulance, no one listens to you! Actually, it was a good thing I went. They started an IV in the ambulance, and I started feeling my parched mouth getting moist in a few minutes. I told them all the meds I routinely take, including Vicodin for siacitia (sp?) Well, I'm always careful with my meds, never exceed the recommend dosage or timing, however, turns our I was so severely dehydrated it concentrated the drugs in my blood so it was like an overdose. Well, by the time I got to the hospital I was well on my way to being rehydrated, but they kept me there 6 hours running tests. They said it was good I came in when I did, otherwise I could have had serious reactions to the dehydration and the drug build up. The only thing that really sucks about the whole experience is that we had pre-paid for our tour (Roberts Tours $350!) and they won't give us our money back! We called and cancelled, 2 hours prior to the tour pick-up, but the guy was really snarky, he just said they didn't issue refunds for cancellations less than 24 hours. We explained that I was ill and going to the ER, he just said so sorry, that wasn't their problem, their website clearly states their cancellation policy (we made the reservations by phone, nothing was said about the cancellation policy!) Honestly, you'd think they'd make an exception for such circumstances! Now that I'm home I've written several emails to Roberts Tours asking that considering the circumstances they not charge us (BTW, it was $350!), but so far no answer. Phone calls I'm just placed on hold!

Well, I'm just rambling here now. The trip did end on a good note, even though I'm still fighting Roberts Tours. The Hilton called to see if I was ok and if there was anything they could do, they even sent up a lovely fruit basket. They siad they were so sorry about Roberts Tours, they had no control over them, and suggested next time we arange our tours through whatever hotel we stay at or at least ask for a recommendation. Those tours depend on recommendations and reputation so if we had booked a tour through the Hilton's recommended operators they would be much more inclined to give us a refund. Still, the Hilton gave us 20,000 HH points to help ease the blow of our lousey experience. Nice going!A good point to remember if you book tours, book them through a hotel or agency they want to maintain a good relationship with, since most individual customers don't represent repeat business, anyways!

If we do go back to Hawaii I think I'd like the next trip to be just one island--island hopping is exhausting. We'd probably chose Oahu, since its the most diverse, although all were winners! Aloha!

DMRick,
I just saw your post. I assume this is your first trip to Oahu, so let me give you some advice.

Driving aroung is quite congested and confusing. I really wouldn't recommend renting a car for a day trying to see the sights. Two years ago, we connected from the Big Island to HNL for our flight home. Since our plane left late that night, we thought like you it would be nice to rent a car and see some of Oahu. I was talked out of it. Instead, we got a private tour around the island (Not Roberts Tours, if you read my above post!) I forgrt the name of the company, but I can find it if you're interested. It was a limo service that picked us up at the airport and returned us in plenty of time for our flight. We did a circle island tour and saw many of the highlights. There's also group tours you could do. It cost us about $300, but a great value. Do consider, you're not familiar with the area, just getting into a rental car takes a lot of your already limited time, the traffic is horrendous in certain parts (especially Waikiki), you'll probably be tired the last day of your trip and don't need the stress of getting lost and anxious over missing your flight. Also, there are pockets of crime all around Oahu that you could stumble into. Just my recommendation--I can find the name of the tour, if you'd like. We chose a private tour since our time was limited.
