anyone have a meterology degree or

My DH's cousin does, and he's on the faculty of the meteorolgy dept at U of Wisconsin Green Bay. I understand his specialty is rain patterns in Africa.

I actually know quite a few. I bowl with one and have met the rest through work. All the ones I know work for Oil companies, or Energy trading companies. They monitor either tropical weather, hurricanes and tropical storms, or look at cold weather patterns moving across the US. All of these events have a direct impact on the market value of oil, gas, natuaral gas, heating oil, etc. It also effects crops such as wheat, rice, corn, soy beans, etc.

They all enjoy the work and get to use all of their education every day.

Cool thread, thanks OP! My DD13 has a huge interest in meteorology thanks to a great science teacher. She wants to attend Oklahoma and study meteorology. She's already visited the campus, competes in science olympiad, and wants to do research. It will be interesting to read everyone's replies.

Ahh - thanks - its been the only thing my dh has been interested in since he was a kid...and he's now thinking about going to school for it . Of course his real dream was broadcast - but he's too old for that (he's over 35) & of course there's only a few of those people anyway.

He has nothing else he's ever talked about wanting to do - he's been in food as general managers & retail as management but he's never been truly happy in any of those places. Though there is one restaurant he'd love to work for corporate - but he's not so sure.

ANYWAY - we had a long conversation & went thru some online questions about finding your passion in life & such & he's decided to go for it - to take online classes in meterology.

I plan to support him.
Though I have to admit I hate the idea of dumping all that money into a degree where he can't get a job.....but heck teachers can't even get a job around here - so at this point it doesn't matter I don't guess.

I just want him to think thru it all - when he can't get a job in broadcast will he still want to do meterology.....but getting that thru to him, well......:headache:

My son has a meterology degree and worked for a television station as the weather person for 3 years. He loved doing the weather but TV news is not an easy business. The starting salary was not very good, I was amazed how low it was for all the work that you do. When they offered to renew his contract he chose not to and is now looking for another job. He LOVES the weather and is a really good forecaster but will probably end up doing something else.

A good friend of mine received a degree in Meterology from Purdue University years ago. After getting his degree he took the Civil Service exams for govt. positions. He was placed with the National Weather Service. In the beginning he had to take an assignment out of our area and it is shift work. But it is an extremely good paying job with great benefits.

And where I live, the majority of the "weather people" do NOT have a degree in meteorology.

It can be a great job, I would do a search on the gov't. websites to see if they are hiring in that area and the percentages of placement.

yes I definitely figured even the local guys made enough to live on -I know not tons -UGH! Especially as many hours as goes into hurricanes & such.

Hopefully your son wil get another job

My son recently graduated with his Masters in Atmospheric Science, but is having a difficult time breaking into the field. It is a very tough market out there right now. He just needs to get that first job to gain some valuable experience, and is so very eager to get started. He has sent out dozens of resumes, but so far...nothing. :sad1:

Yep, since I live in the same town as the Accuweather headquarters.

One of my roommates from US Air Force Academy majored in meterology... she's now an Air Force pilot (KC-10 refueling tanker). I think it's pretty handy to know weather stuff in her line of work. :thumbsup2

I work with 4 folks....they're TV weather people.

Know several that have moved on to the National Weather Service. Pay and benefits are far better there than TV.

Before my friend became a "weather man" he taught meteorology in college.

I took meteorology ONE YEAR in college before I realized it was more science and math than I could handle!! I remember my professor's name was TEMP! :lmao:

The ones that I know are meterologists...iow, weather anchors.

The ones I went to school with first got their Broadcast Journalism degree and Then went on to get their meterology certification.

Since you accidentally omitted one letter, can I omit another letter?

I have a Metrology degree. Metrology is the science of measurement.

my son is in a 5 year masters program in applied mathematics and climate science-he is an intern at NOAA doing research on gravity waves and climate. At the moment its seems as tho this will translate in to a permanent job upon graduation unless he decides to join the air force.

Yep that's what I'm afraid of - I'm not sure dh realizes how much math & science it will be - he did fine in those classes during his jr college classes - but that'll be WAAAY different.

Applied math & climate science can't be fun! and its not like I'll be able to help him study or anything. (he's been able to help me while I've been in school 'cause I'm an ed major)

My friend studied Meteorology and he presently is a weather producer for a major TV network in New York City.
