Anyone had an online (mortgage) payment returned?

I am totally feaking out tonight. My husband got an email from our bank saying that our mortgage payment we sent a few days ago is being returned to our account. No explanation.

Of course our mortgage servicer is closed until the morning so there's no way to know what's going on.

We have never been late or missed a payment in the 5 years we've lived here, but google searching of course leads me to think the worst.

Anyone have this happen to them?

To make matters worse, our online account with the mortgage company has been "disabled" although the automatic telephone service has our info and says our most recent payment was January.

I have never had this happen, but let's not go to worst case scenario just yet. Perhaps the mortgage was sold to another company. Could you have missed the letter from the new bank because you thought it was junk mail?

Also Google the mortgage provider to see if they have merged, been bought out, etc.

Or perhaps, it was a mistake on the banks part. They are not infallible.

First off I would check my bank account and see what is going on.
Did you have enough money to cover the mortgage? I'd check that first.

Are you sure the email is legitimate? I wouldn't trust an email. Sorry but in this day and age. I wouldn't click on anything in that email.

That is odd your account is 'disabled with the mortage company.

I would call them in the morning. The worse thing that happens is that they run it through again and you pay a late fee.

Good luck!

Check your bank to make sure there was enough funds.

Check the amount of the payment - was it a full payment? I work for a bank, and they often return partial payments.

Did you request any kind of modification? That might mess with payments, too - we don't take online payments during a mod.

If your mortgage is through GMAC, the reason could be that GMAC just sold a bunch of loans to another servicer and your payment address was changed. We got the notice only the day AFTER we had scheduled payment for our mortgage. DH went in and updated the address. Maybe this is the explanation, even if you're loan isn't through GMAC.

Thanks everyone. We paid in full, and we had the funds in the account. Just waiting on the place to open and then maybe we can figure out what's going on!

I would guess either just a simple computer problem or most likely that your mortgage was sold. I think that in the six years we've owned our home, we've had five different mortgage servicers. It is such a pain in the butt. Sometimes there has been very little notice of the change. When it changed in December, my first indication was when I couldn't get into my BofA account. Don't stress, I'd bet that it is nothing.

Wow, huge sigh of relief. All that stress for nothing!

Apparently they are having problems with their online payment processor and it's kicking payments back to the banks. Uh... this is kind of a BIG problem, you'd think they would have sent notice or something? So we are paying by phone today and hopefully it will go through and not be counted late.

No luck getting into the "disabled account" so I'm just going to have DH keep calling them until they get it fixed!

Since it is a problem on their end, they certainly should not charge you as being late.

Glad you were able to get an answer and it was a problem on the bank's end. I know that must have been a stressful night.
