Anyone had a mole removed?

I had a decent sized mole removed from my thigh on Tuesday. I was given instructions to keep it covered for 10 days and clean it once a day (when the bandage gets changed). What I'm wondering is, is it supposed to hurt so bad to clean it?!? I was only able to rinse it off yesterday with a little water and it burned/stung so bad I was screaming, I never even managed to get soap in it! (I would say I have a medium pain threshold, I have been through several surgery's). Anyone have any advice?

I have had 2 removed and never had any pain with it. I do have a high pain threshold though.

I don't remember covering it for 10 days though. Maybe 3?

If you think something is amiss, get it checked out.:thumbsup2

My dh has had many, many moles removed.
I think it mainly depends on where the mole is/was. However, he has not had much pain with any of them.
I would advise calling the dr. to see if you need to go in to get it checked out.
Good luck!

I have had several done and remember no pain at all.

other than a slight ache for a few hours I don't remember any real pain with mine and it was on my face near my mouth in an area that moved all the time. I would call your dr right away.

DD10 had one removed in July. She said it hurt some, but nothing bad. You should probably check with your doctor.

Thanks for your fast responses everyone. I am calling their messaging service now (they are already closed for today). I was not sure what/if any pain I was to be having.

I've had a couple removed and I was never told to clean it, just change the bandage and reapply the anti-bacterial gel. Water never touched it until the bandage came off.

DS had one on his head removed twice. The second time was very deep, and it was quite painful for him. DH had one removed a while back, too. Neither one of them were told to "clean" them. Both were told to keep them covered and dry for a time period (I think 24 hours for DS's first time and DH's, and 3 days for DS's second time), and then change the bandage/put vaseline on them for the next week or so.

I had a mole cut out last month. It was a pretty deep cut and at first I was a bit horrified as it looked strangely deep and long for removing a mole. In the past I only had them razored off, but this time a previous doc had tried freezing it and the procedure failed and I feared further freezing by same doc now that the mole had changed shape and color. After cutting it out, they placed some antibiotic stuff on it and covered it with a bandaid, but said there were no other instructions other than keep an eye on it to make sure it did not ooze or have other signs of infection. I kept it covered because I was then on vacation and did not want the Florida sun beating on it. Within a week it had scabbed and the scab fell off. A month later, the deep gash is now level skin and I have a thin red line where the cut was. I had absolutely no pain associated with contact of water or soap as you describe.

DS had one cut off of his foot on tuesday. They put several stitches in it and then put a few steri strips across it. They told him to take the initial bandages off the next day, to wash it daily and put the anti bacterial medication on it daily. They said to let the steri strips fall off naturally and go back next friday to have the stitches removed. He has never complained about it hurting, but I do know when I had one cut off my eye, it did burn for several days.

I've had several removed and biopsied, and the only one that was uncomfortable was one on my neck, and I would say it was uncomfortable, not really painful. Don't remember ever having to wash the area. Good luck with the doctor. I would definitely be checking with them.

There is NO way I'd be trying to clean that with water and soap!

Are you sure the instructions weren't to change the dressing daily and make sure to keep the area clean?

Unless you think it might be infected, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Other people's stories of having moles removed may not be relevant as every body and every mole is different. It's possible that yours was deeper than others. It's possible that your nerve concentration is different.

I would be interested to know if this was a raised spot that they just cut from the surface or was it a flat spot that they had to "dig deeper" to remove.

FTR, I also had a spot removed from my thigh (and two others from my armpit and my back). The one from my thigh was the only one that was uncomfortable. It was flat and they had to dig deeper to remove it. Since it's only been a couple of days for you, I wouldn't be alarmed yet.

Yes, the sheet I was sent home with specifically says to clean with soap and water daily, then cover with vaseline and a bandaid.

Yes, they had to dig into my thight to remove the whole mole.

I spoke with the Dr today and was told to come in so they could look at it. Turns out I needed a Steri Strip put on. I'm not sure why one was not put on in the first place, but now I don't have to clean the actual "hole" in my leg, I'm relieved as the pain was a little to much for me!

I'm glad to see you got it taken care of before the weekend!
