Anyone grown a salt crystal garden?

I know someone here has grown a salt crystal garden with a child for a school project!

Are the crystals supposed to be soft? I don't know why, but I expected it to be hard, but I touched where the crystal growth is, and it's very soft and mushy.

We used ammonia, laundry bluing, salt, etc. Did we do something wrong?

I did that once in elementary school and yes they were soft and broke apart when touched.
